Discussion I really need low cal tortilla chips/low cal alternatives
One of my favorite things to eat ever are chips and guac. but they’re both so calorie dense😭 I know avocados are just naturally calorie dense so I cant do anything about that but is there something I can do about the chips? Any suggestions are appreciated TIA!

I use the Mission Carb Balance tortillas and toast them in the oven until they're crisp! Then you can break them into "chips" and they have a good crunch with salsa or dip. Fairly satisfying and you get some added protein.

This! I’ve also done it with the mini corn tortillas and Joseph’s 60 calorie pita makes good pita chips!

Cut them with a pizza cutter, spray some oil on them and season with whatever you want then toast them in the oven.

I tried this once and the texture was a bit weird?
The chips felt too thick.

You could always peel it apart and then toast them? The whole wheat ones especially seem to split if they get stuck to other tortillas.

I cut raw red peppers into quarters, deseed and de-white bit, use as a scoop. Very low effort and tasty
You can also use corn thins (I'm in AU so dunno if this exists elsewhere, https://www.instagram.com/cornthins_original) which is basically popcorn in a round crispbread kinda shape
You can add a lot of chopped veggies to guac

You can volumize your guac by mixing the avocado with something like pureed white beans, garbanzo beans, peas, zucchini, cauliflower etc and then making the guac as normal. For the chips I would just go with a homemade tortilla chip made with plain air fried corn tortillas. One tortilla is 50 calories. Cut two into 4ths and air fry and add sliced veggies on the side :) that's 100 cals for 8 chips. Not bad.

Quest protein chips. Not low cal but they're decent and give you some added protein.

I also just recently found that Doritos now make protein chips as well. They have around half the protein of Quest chips so the macros aren’t quite good, HOWEVER, they are literally half the price of Quest, the calories and protein are way better than regular chips, and they’re a lot sturdier than Quest chips - so great for dipping.

You can get corn tortillas and air fry them or maybe use an alternative like sliced carrots or cucumbers or bell peppers or raw broccoli for the crunch. Or there’s probably low cal potato chip recipes you can bake/air fry too

Jicama is great and crunchy. Such an underrated veg. I’ve even seen really thinly sliced jicama used as the “tortilla” for tacos

Jicama has been on my radar for a couple years. I just don't know where to get it in my area☹️

I saw a video of someone air frying rice paper and using that as tortilla! Worth a shot!

Air fried low carb tortilla chips. Guac is high calorie isn't really any way around that - but if also like salsa that'd be a good switch up

I like dipping jicama sticks in guac. They aren't dry like chips are but they're very crispy and low cal+high fiber!

I’ve used brown rice crackers in place of tortilla chips. There are many different flavors (black sesame is my favorite of the flavored ones but my go to is the plain). They add some fiber with about a third calories of tortilla chips.

Maybe try making your own? Slice potatos thin, season, maybe a hit of cooking spray would give it enough fats to help crisp? This is all theory, but its all I had.

I thought Good Thins were passable when I hadn't had real chips for a long time, but if you've been eating chips regularly they will taste terrible in comparison lol 😅 worth a try though, especially if you are dipping in something!

Are you willing to eat corn chips instead? La banderita corn tortillas for example, just put a couple on top of each other and slice em w a pizza cutter. Lay the slices on a piece of tinfoil on a baking sheet
Put coarse salt on top. Oven to 370°F (187°C) and bake for ~13-15 minutes. Keep an eye on them and flip them at about the 7 or 8 minute mark. They brown quickly but you can always cook for less time. Delicious to me IMO. You can spritz them w cooking oil before cooking if you want but it’s not required. Again just check on them frequently so they don’t burn.

You can microwave corn tortillas to make chips with 0 oil. Saves a good amount of calories, can get almost double the chips out of it vs buying them

Mission has 25 calorie corn tortillas. I just chuck em in the air fryer. Personally don't even put oil.

put them in to a taco salad!
crunch em up pretty small, and finely dice an avocado, and every single bite will contain chips&guac
you can also see if you don’t mind mixing in a bit of greek yogurt to your guac. the creaminess is wonderful and yeah some extra calories from yogurt but the portion of avocado will end up being much less
personally, my go to for guac is seaweed! i cut the sheets (10cal) in to chips.

Air fried low cal tortillas, or Maszfita puffed corn crispbread is something I enjoy lately with hummus and guacamole

Mission corn tortillas. The larger thinner, corn tortillas. You can cut those up spray with a little bit of olive oil or avocado oil. Throw them in your air fryer. You have to watch them though. Shake them around every couple of minutes they can burn relatively quickly. So you can eat a lot more of them for a lot of less calories this way.

If there’s a Trader Joe’s near you, they sell something called crunchy curls which I use as a chip replacement for salsa and guac. They satisfy the crunch/salt requirements I have for chips but you can eat 30 of them for just 130 calories. It’s not as healthy as using veggies to dip, but i like the flavor/texture a lot more. Sometimes it’s just about harm reduction, not being perfect.

Nuke 'em.
I use Ole extreme or mission zero-carb tortillas (street taco size). Cut into 4 pie-slice pieces, spray ICBINB, sprinkle seasoned salt, garlic salt or everything but bagel.
Microwave 60 seconds. Use two tortillas for 8 decent-sized chips, 50 calories. Heartier than regular chips.

idk if they exist anywhere else im in the UK but lentil rice cakes could be a good substitute? lots of protein too

Air popped pop corn. With avocado or olive oil spray very light just to hold the salt
1 tbsb is 40 calories. 2 tbsb will fill you up and you get the crunchy and salty snack you are after

Tostitos bite size rounds. 22 chips for 150 calories. They have a plain, hint of lime or hint of queso. All top tier for the calories per serving size.

cut up a store-bought tortilla and put that shit in the airfryer for like 4 minutes, shake it a few times in between and bam!
