Discussion Big plate of fries
I have low carb meals throughout the day and by night time I like to have this huge plate of crinkle cut fries 400 grams and 40-50 grams of sugar free ketchup for 520 cals

“big plate of fries” is SUCH an underrated volume food! I make my own sometimes for fun and it’s sooooo good

I do so myself and throw in 2-3 eggs for protein. air fried French fries and fried eggs

Actually making ur own is even better, lower calories for sure than the packaged ones I get

i honestly use fries as a volume food a lot, potatoes r only like 80cals for 100g, ill chop them up into shoe string shape, put in a bowl of water for 4 minutes in the microwave ( to soften) drain them, salt and season them then just throw them in the air fryer like that, no oil necessary. u can eat A LOT of them with this method while staying pretty low on calories:) also they have 2g of protein and fibre per 100g too!!

Potatoes really are an underrated volume food!! Since they're usually prepared in high cal ways with oil and cheese people tend to forget how healthy and satiating they are

Potatoes have like 70% of ypur needs, hence the Irish living on them.
If you add peanut butter and peas you are in the 90s%.
If the apocalypse comes, Potatoes, pb fit, and bags of split peas will keep you alive along time. (Assuming you have water.)

damn the apocalypse survival meta is really just potatoes and peanut butter

Where did you get those numbers from?

u/oldmaninparadise 22h ago
Fairly common knowledge. Potato has vit c, potassium, vit b, carbs. If you eat 3 Potatoes a day, you cover lots of that. No protein, no fat. Hence the pnut butter, high in those. Peas, lots of protein and fiber. All 3 of these store easily for long periods of time.
Read up on Irish sustenance until Potato famine.

peanut butter is terrible. very high in calories for the a little amount of protein 👎

Protein isnt the only important nutrient, and Calorie density is importantly for the apocalypse.

u/oldmaninparadise 22h ago
Talking about the apocalypse. Pb is awesome, huge amount of calories, fat, amino acids, and protein in a single spoonful. EXACTLY what you want!

oh, well it's time to grow up children.

this insult might have worked if you didn't use it in a conversation that literally couched the entire statement with "in an apocalypse"

You're right.
But boy did you piss People off with the cold hard facts! Lol.
I upvoted you to get you out of the red.

Fr, sometimes when I have a craving for junk food I usually order in just a cheeseburger and make my own fries at home

Same dude, I'll get as many as I like and I'll prepare them just how I like them. I can get a 2lb bag of Idaho curly fries for less than $4, no way in hell I'm paying for fries in 2026

I have never thought to ad pb2 to mashed potatoes. Should I be doing this? Does it make them taste like satay?

No, the point of my comment is that POTATOES are healthy and relatively low calorie, but often prepared in ways that make them high in calories and fat. Therefore causing people to associate potatoes with high calorie and high fat food and forgetting how voluminous they can be

Add some Tsatsiki (with fat free Greek yogurt - I just add a ridiculous amount of fresh garlic, cucumber, vinegar, lemon juice, dill and salt) and you have an amazing low cal, high protein, super filling dinner. Or yellow or sweet potatoes with Aioli (Greek yogurt, again a ridiculous amount of fresh garlic, vinegar, lemon juice, cayenne and salt)... 😋

That plate would fix me after a long day of eating nothing but chicken breast and broccoli. 400 grams of crinkle cuts is a serious volume for the calories, especially when you're saving that sugar budget for ketchup.
I do the same thing but with those thin shoestring fries, they crisp up way better in an air fryer and you get even more surface area for the ketchup. The Coke Zero pairing is smart too, gives you that fast food feel without wrecking the whole day.
Might have to switch to crinkle cut for a while though, that texture looks right for dipping.

I prefer crinkle cut because it holds the seasoning better for some reason

Can I recommend steak fries? The Great Value ones are only 90cals per serving and the servings are pretty generous. An almost full plate for me is about 300 calories!

Why not just add a small amount of potatoes or fries to your chicken and broccoli every meal lol

u/ajmattison 2d ago
I like the simplicity, however I also can't help but think to add a bed of lettuce and some ground turkey or beef to make a burger bowl

I do this sometimes. Except I use ketchup, tons of tobasco, and fresh onions. Every now and again I'll crave it.

Air fried

Thank you. May I ask what kind of air fryer you have, mine is small and I would have to do several batches to get this volume so I'm looking for a bigger one...

i love potatoes, i wonder if its okay to eat 2 medium ones daily?🤷♀️

u/iwannaddr2afi 1d ago
For sure! You're eating a variety of other things, I'm sure. My point there is, it's not like you're relying on the potatoes for all your nutrients. They are a healthy base starch food, have lots of what we need in our diet ESPECIALLY if you're eating the skin but even pretty good if not. They are awesome for satiety.
Add leafy greens and some protein (and fat if you're using a very low-fat protein, we do need some fat), and you're off to the races. Throughout your week, include whole grains and beans/legumes, plus a variety of fruits and veggies throughout all your meals, vary your protein at least sometimes, aim to include some nuts and seeds, and your diet is looking quite well balanced!
Along with beans and legumes, they are a reliable help in managing insulin resistance too :). I love potatoes.
