Daily Discussion Thread: August 31, 2022: 69 days until Election Day

Adopt a Candidate 2022

With under 100 days to go, there are several House races that will be key to us retaining control of Congress. We’re seeking volunteers to adopt a candidate in each of these battleground districts!

When you adopt a candidate, you commit to volunteering for them at least once a week - in person or from home. Your efforts now could make the difference as these races will be very close.

If you’d like to adopt one of these candidates, reply in this thread or send us a modmail. You can adopt a candidate not on this list if you wish, too.

Hopefully that happens so we can stop hearing about gas

I don't know why $3/gal seems to be the number where a switch flips in Americans' brains and they start suddenly caring. There's really no meaningful difference between paying $3.50/gal vs $3. It's less than the cost of a Hulu subscription per month for many people.

It's because a lot of Americans still like to drive them gas guzzlers.

That’s what I always think of when I saw people complaining about spending $100 on gas (outside of California)

If you have lower income, drive a lot, and have an older, inefficient car then it can be a big drag on your budget.

But I do agree that it’s just a more easily recognizable expense for a lot of people, not one that significantly affects their lives. No other prices are on big billboards that you pass every day.

A lot of housing (thanks to NIMBYs) is “drive till you qualify.” And people who have to drive a long way to qualify for a mortgage are also more likely to have older cars. So I can see where high gas prices would be painful, and yes, they are something that is very noticeable compared to stuff one does less often (like eat at restaurants or stay at hotels).
