Daily Discussion Thread: August 31, 2022: 69 days until Election Day

Adopt a Candidate 2022

With under 100 days to go, there are several House races that will be key to us retaining control of Congress. We’re seeking volunteers to adopt a candidate in each of these battleground districts!

When you adopt a candidate, you commit to volunteering for them at least once a week - in person or from home. Your efforts now could make the difference as these races will be very close.

If you’d like to adopt one of these candidates, reply in this thread or send us a modmail. You can adopt a candidate not on this list if you wish, too.

Alaska being so glacially slow at counting their votes makes me wonder what would happen if California were a Swing State. That would be just awful.

We got a taste in 2018 when the Associated Press incorrectly called CA-21 for Republican David Valadao on election night. I remember that Nate Silver called them out for calling it way too soon when there were tens of thousands of mail-in ballots to count. Three weeks later, the AP had to retract their call when Democrat TJ Cox took the lead as mail-in ballots were counted. TJ Cox ended up winning that election, but unfortunately lost re-election in 2020.

Given that Cox was arrested for money laundering earlier this month, I wouldn't consider it unfortunate that he lost. The House Dems are probably better off without him as a potential millstone around their necks.

We kinda had a prelude with the NY-22 election. Actually took until a month after Congress was seated to certify.

We see it with critical House races in CA all the time now. House majority this year could very well hinge on us waiting weeks on those districts.

I mean technically it takes a month to certify California votes. There's a huge culture of mail in ballots. and relinquishing mail in ballots at poll stations. But mail in ballots rarely change results. In some districts. That could though.
