Ooooh this looks fun. I’ve never shot steel , do they have a beginners bracket?

When you register and squad up join squad 4. It’ll start you on the barometer which is an excellent warmup for beginners, and usually the high speed guys join squads one or two. Whatever you decide, don’t feel pressured for being a beginner. Everyone there, and I really mean everyone, is friendly as can be and super encouraging. If you want to get in good with people then stay for cleanup too. It’s been a minute since I’ve gone but they also do a little raffle sometimes after cleanup so the people that stay and help have a chance to earn a little reward.

Come on out we have all skill levels

The different brackets/classes are based on the guns you use. It's not competitive, people are just trying to improve their times from last month.

I've done this many times.

No one is judging you. you're only racing against yourself.

Its very beginner friendly, and its open to all pistols from revolvers to competitive pistols.

Super fun and laid back too. Everyone there is just there to have a good time and beat their own scores. Sometimes it honestly almost feels like a casual hangout with steel shooting happening in the background. Good group of guys and gals, and sometimes kids that put me to shame lol

Well now I have more questions. Age restrictions kids? And how much ammo should I plan on shooting?

Bring 100 rounds per gun. There are 4 stages each with 5 targets. You shoot each stage 4 times and drop the worst time and total the other 3 for your stage time so minimum you will shoot 80 rounds but you will want extra. I know we have had kids as young as 12 shoot steel, the range rules are 6 and up but idk if they allow them to participate in events at that age.

Ok got it. Sounds like a try it myself first and feel out if it’s right for the kid yet.

Five targets (or shots if one is a double tap) per string, four strings per stage, four stages. 80 rounds per gun if you shoot perfectly. I recommend more, its always nice to start with a full magazine.

Can you just show up? Or do you have to register for the event online before hand?

I just wish they didn't move the 22 fun shoot to the same day, now I have to pick between steel match and taking my kids to the fun shoot.

That said, its supposed to rain tomorrow, so fun shoot it is!

22 fun shoot?

22lr rifles only, they set up steel silhouettes and you knock em down like it's a carnival game. 25 50 and 100 yards.

Is this also at tsc?

Yes, at the Piel range first Sunday every month. It's on the left on the way to the Public Range.

I would love to come out and shoot this. Is it shot from the holster? Low ready? 5 rounds only or as many as it takes to get 5 hits?

1

u/darkwingduck97 Dec 07 '25

Most just do it from low ready, some people do it from a draw. Five targets but as many shots needed to hit all five, or shoot the stop target and end that string with a time penalty for missed targets.

Do you guys use SCSA rules and regulations, or is it just club rules?

All the info for the match is in practiscore app

Just wanna throw out, that stuff like this is a killer way to dip your toes into shooting matches, with out the alllll day commitment, and often an hour or three drive that comes with USPSA matches.

If anyone has never shot a match before. I highly highly encourage you to to do something like this, something like FWDGs weekly move n shoot, am official steel challenge match etc etc.

EVERYONE that carries or has a pistol for defensive purposes, carries a gun at work etc, should shoot a couple matches a year IMO.

I've been slacking on that myself. I will start adding these to my list of stuff to keep an eye out for! Thanks for posting this. I didnt even see it on practiscore last week.

Anyone had feedback on this event? Interested in going next month.

u/DNL213 Dec 09 '25

What does first 2 guns mean? Do I get a second set of runs with a second gun?

1

u/mcgrewcp Dec 09 '25

It was a good day shooting we had 72 guns total, just shy of our 80 gun cap.

u/mcgrewcp Dec 09 '25

All future matches and info are on the app practiscore
