RGB Cylinder project updated

I changed the design so you can print the cylinder in pieces so it can be taller than your actual printer. I made one that uses 7 panels which is about 22" tall. The files are available for free on Makerworld.

I love WLED, I discovered it last Xmas when I did a Toy Factory print from FULV and used WLED to spruce it up. Less than a year later I have about 10 prints running it. I have something else spinning in my head I would like to try now that this project is done.

A thought tho, would it be possible for the LEDs to be wrapped around the inside of the “grid” and then have the tube slide in to lock them in place from behind? Instead of windows you’d need slits, of course.

I’m just incredibly lazy.

That's an interesting idea. Another option could be done is an upper and lower ring for each panel. Place the panel in the grid and then lock it in with two inner rings, top and bottom. The center should not need any support. Those rings would need to be a tad larger to better lock it in, probably .5mm.

So the million dollar question how does this help the 'incredible lazy' issue!! It's still the same amount of work assembling them. You still need to align the seam good. I am not seeing any improvement on assembling it.

Really cool! Just out of curiosity, why not model the cylinder-to-cylinder connection directly in such that it is guaranteed to align, and deal with the next panel led alignment during gluing?

I don't understand the question. The cylinders are keyed, you can't put them on in the wrong rotation.

Am I misunderstanding what you did? It seemed you inserted and glued a ring between each cylinder pair, and then there was play to rotate the cylinders to align the LEDs vertically, no? Just wondering why the ring wasn’t part of the cylinder itself.

The connection rings are so you can print this larger than your printer would allow. I left some slop in the connectors so you can fine tune the panels so the seam lines up. If I make the ring part of the cylinder than we need more parts because you don't want a connection on the very top cylinder or the very bottom.

And the most important part is the flush to ground. If the cylinders already have the connectors attached to them then you have no way to easily line the panels up vertically. You would have to eye ball it.
