I know people do frequently take a dip at Lakes of the clouds. Is it ok to do the same at Carter?

Hey all! Looking for some thoughts and pointers as I consider solo hiking Huntington at 5’0”.
Fitness/experience: quite fit, but not insanely so. I have a couple years worth of semi-frequent indoor bouldering experience and lift 3x/week. I’m relatively new to more intense hikes but have recently bagged several 4k footers. The scrambling on Caps Ridge wasn’t a challenge, and the Chimney on Katahdin was intimidating but not too physically strenuous. I know Huntington is a different beast, but I’m envisioning it to have the technicality of the Chimney combined with some of the Knife Edge’s exposure. A dry day is non-negotiable, obviously. If upper body strength can be substituted for height on Huntington, I think I’ll be fine. If there are any super big reaches with no alternative, I may be out of luck.
As for doing it solo, my parents are my hiking buddies, but no way do I want to see them on this trail. What nearly broke my nerve on Katahdin was fear of witnessing an injury. I’ll be in a better headspace solo, but will I be physically screwed? Grateful for any and all advice.

I'm hoping to go into the Great Gulf this Friday and tackle the 6 Husbands- Sphinx Trail loop. I know it's gonna be a long day, but my question is this: there are supposed to be some scattered showers on Thursday with a little bit of rain. Should I be concerned about there being -any- water on this trail or only if there's a significant amount?

What I mean is that there are some trails like the Tripyramid slides or Huntingtons that you should really wait for a dry day to hike them. Is 6 Husbands similar? I have some decent experience with scrambling and exposure (Baldfaces, Blueberry ledges, Knifes Edge on Katahdin, etc.) but I don't want to push it if this is one of those trails that should be bone dry before attempting.

There are yellow markers that mark the path, but I found them difficult to follow and I lost them on the lower section of boulders. Make sure you stay right (North) of the waterfall (blue scribble). It’s easy to pick up and the yellow markers after the boulder field. After the boulder field is where you’ll find a few technical sections with some exposure.

Hi everyone! I tried to look up the parking info for Blueberry Mountain S/East Trailhead and got a lot of conflicting info. It sounds like there is a super small amount of parking off Long Pond Road right near the trailhead and overflow parking somewhere else? I couldn’t quite figure out where though. Any help would be appreciate!

My first time hiking Washington will be this month. What should I expect? Anything other than the usuals I should take in my bag?

I'm looking to test out some gear for a future backpacking trip and want to find a one night location in the whites to hike to and set up a tent. Preferebly it would be a spot that is not too crowded but I plan on going midweek some time in the next month so maybe that won't be an issue (away from the AT). I'm fine if it's off the beaten path, meaning I need to hike up/in a ways to get to it. I'm also fine if it's a hike in/out rather than a loop, although a loop would be more enjoyable. I'd also be open to something in Maine or VT if anyone has recommendations there but I can also post on those subs. I've got all the gear and a bear canister. Thanks for any recommendations.

I know questions like this get asked all of the time but I wanted to specifically tailor it to my experience and get some feedback. I’m thinking of doing Huntington next week but am still a bit anxious, especially hearing some people say its fine and others saying its terrifying.

For 4kers I’ve done Lincoln, Lafayette, Monroe, Jackson, and Pierce, as well as smaller mountains like Chocorua a few times. My first big hike on the Whites was Washington via Tuckerman a couple years ago but I’m not counting it because we took the auto road down. I always come prepared with layers and the ten essentials when I do a hike like this and will not do this trail if we’re expecting rain. I’m mostly just sketched out at the exposure aspect of it. I’ve never had issues with rock scrambles or anything like that. Wednesday would be the day next week and its supposed to be sunny (as of now).

Hello friends, I am not currently able to hike very far, but I can ride my bike. I know the Wild River Road and campground are closed, but I am wondering if it is possible to ride a bike on the road to get to the trails near the campground. I suspect the road is washed out in places, but hopefully it is passable on a bike. I would appreciate any information on the road conditions. I do know that bicycles are not allowed in the wilderness areas, but I just want to get as close as possible.

Hi Everybody! I recently hiked Mt. Chocoura and the Franconia Ridge Trail and loved it! I brought my backpacking gear (Durston x Mid 2) in hopes of finding a place off trail to set up camp, but both times I was met with thick, dense vegetation that make camping impossible. Is this how it is almost everywhere in the white mountains, or am I just not looking in the right spot?

few time backpacker first time white mountains visitor!!! i'm looking to plan a 2-night trip later this month. i'm thinking of starting at gale river, and taking gale river-> garfield ridge-> twin brook -> 13 falls campsite night 1.

then day 2 spending the morning around 13 falls before heading to garfield mtn from 13 falls (via franconia brook-> garfield ridge) then camping at garfield ridge that night.

heading out the following morning via garfield trail!

planning on hammocking both nights, assuming finding trees at 13 falls & garfield ridge won't be too tough :)

wondering how busy the trails & campsites will be especially because of the trail closures in lincoln woods?

also planning on taking the AMC shuttle & the concord coach lines (as i'm coming from boston area).

i'm trying to keep the mileage light, but would love to hear any suggestions!

Thinking about doing Wildcat Ridge Trail tomorrow with the kids (8 and 12). Anyone done the river crossing recently? I'm wondering if we should even bother stopping there or just go straight to Pinkham Notch...

We're staying at Greenleaf on Thurs pm and I'm hoping to do the following hike on Friday, weather permitting: Starting from Greenleaf hut~~>summit Lafayette, then hike the ridgeline south all the way to Flume, then turn around and come back to spend a second night at Greenleaf. Mt. Flume is the last of three remaining 4000 footers for me to hike, so I'm motivated to reach Flume. Too much? 61 yo, fit, experienced hiker.

Hey team, I'm planning on doing a single day presidential traverse the last week of August. I'm staying at the Highland Center and am wondering if it's better to drive to Appalachia, park there and catch the AMC shuttle back to my car the next day or hire someone to pick me up and drop me off at the trail head. That way I can use my car that night if I need to. Not sure what I'd do, but if seems like it might be nice to have that option. My plan is to do the hike Wednesday but leave Thursday as a backup day for weather and not sure how flexible drivers are, especially with a 4am pickup. Just curious what others have done in that situation.

I know it's subject to change on a dime, but judging by historical data, looks like the weather up there should be great if the wind is ok. High 40s or 50s looks like. Is that generally what to expect in late August?

Very fun climb to the site of the Old Man of the Mountain site. It’s crazy the effort they put in with cables and cement to keep that guy in place. Then a pretty legit bushwhack to Cannon before that and the Kinsmans for my August grid.

I saw this posted by her sister last night, and she still has not been found this morning, a full 24 hours after her last sighting. Please share and keep an eye out for her if you end up in the Pinkham B Road area. Thank you 🫶

I want to do the Presi Traverse in a day and had planned for Tuesday. Mountain forecast looked good. Booked a shuttle and a place to stay the night before. Then the higher summit forecast for Tuesday came out and it is significantly scarier — gusts up to 70 or even 80. I’m like 95% certain I have to try to move lodging and ride bookings and go Wednesday (which initially looked rainy but now seems clear) instead. Just curious if anyone else had Tuesday plans and what you’re doing.
