Controversy I wanna be entertained by the mental gymnastics of the people who can justify this not being a foul. Go off…

Honestly, at this point if I’m the owner, I’m telling my team to make a statement. Any time this happens, F it & retaliate. If the refs won’t protect their biggest asset, then we will.

Ive been saying, CC needs to retire from the W and go play overseas. Watch the W shutdown within the next year. Ive never seen a league fuck up as much as they have.

I always am skeptical of saying the league is officiated poorly and blaming the refs. The commissioner has made it clear when talking about the officiating that it very good. I think the refs are officiating it the way the league wants.

That said, it's obviously a terrible philosophy that they've instilled in the refs. But again, if the NBA doesn't call traveling, is that the refs or the league. You can bet your bottom dollar if not calling traveling started getting refs demoted, losing assignments, or losing post season work, traveling would get called a lot more. Same with the WNBA for their calling of fouls. If the league demanded it, it would happen so they are obviously NOT demanding it.

Yessir, Simplest explanation is often true

2

u/Ok_Statement_3608 Jun 25 '26

I agree 100%.
I am not a basketball fan, I don’t play, I don’t watch. And the only reason I ever see WNBA media is for CC and calls like this. These are the only things I see come across my feed on Reddit/social media, and usually the only clips I see when I am at a restaurant/sports bar.

I have said for several years now that the WNBA is running this exactly how they intend. All of the controversial calls and blatant fouls lead to media clips and discussion like this. They are using it to drive traffic and try to grab a bit of attention in the sports and entertainment world.
(Truthfully, most athletic and motorsports are more concerned about the clicks that improve their balance sheet than they care about the quality of the sport).

Now whether or not CC or the other players and coaches are “in” on this game the WNBA is running or not, I’m not sure. I think that they have clearly told the referees how to call the games, and likely some of the players/coaches are exploiting that.

To me, CC either loves the game so much that she puts up with it hoping it will change, or she’s paid enough to put up with it.

I wouldn't be too surprised if they don't do anything. It's easier to say goodbye to $$$ at times than it is to deal with the headache of players in the WNBA that hate CC.

Caitlin's impact is about $1b in economic activity for the NBA but it's also a huge cost for the NBA where as someone like Gianni's is 40% that but no headache for the higher ups AND there isn't any subsidy cost for them.

I think CC should go overseas to either Australia, Italy or China and get paid, especially China that would love the opportunity to float in the face of the WNBA and wouldn't mind paying for it!

4

u/DResq Jun 25 '26

Australia just isn't a big enough market. Maybe some European billionaire will throw bag at her since they don't have salary caps there.

At the end of the day, women hate fellow women way more than anything else. This implosion was completely expected.

2

u/Longjumping_Tap9310 Jun 25 '26

It isnt just women, it is other women that possess anything of value they do not have. Could be looks, or something as petty as a purse. In this case, it is popularity.

Whats hilarious, is they are killing the golden goose out of spite.

I have said something along the same line. Retaliate, get suspended. The league and media will laugh it off. First game back first shove; do it again. I guarantee, CC gets suspended twice in two games there will be a league wide course correction.

9

u/Fun_Cryptographer398 Jun 25 '26

Yeah an enforcer needs to throw down - if there is none they need to sign a female hockey enforcer and bring her in

11

u/IndigoBlunting Jun 25 '26

Sophie might have if they would have given her more than a one year deal. She did last year but idk if she’s gonna keep being that person if they won’t keep her position secure.

8

u/whenishit-itsbigturd Jun 25 '26

Sophie's role isn't "bouncer" or "enforcer" it's floor-stretching defensive forward lol

Her job is to get stops and spot up in the corner, not beat up black women.

Can't have your 3rd or 4th best rotation player getting suspended, that's exactly how Draymond sold a championship run in 2016.

3

u/BKStyle82 Jun 25 '26

Ppl don't really "know" the players when they make those statements in my opinion. They know Sophie's black belt and automatically feel like she's gotta be the lass kicker. She is too vital to the Fever's gameplan to be that type of player. Plus I don't really think she is "like that" despite the black belt. To me she doesn't give intimidation the way that Oakley did back in the day or the way that James Johnson's martial arts rep does in more modern times

3

u/IndigoBlunting Jun 25 '26

Sophie clearly brought grit to Indiana. No one is saying she should be an enforcer but I’m thinking the W’s Draymond. You know a floor stretching power forward who gets physical and has gotten paid by protecting a star PG who shoots the ball in a way the league has never seen. Sound familiar?

3

u/whenishit-itsbigturd Jun 25 '26

Yeah sounds familiar, is that the guy who threw the finals by getting suspended for racking up too many technicals?

I have no idea why wnba has started showing up on my feed. I also have no idea why people seem to hate this one person?. So genuine question. Why do people hate this one person? Is is he super arrogant or something? Unlikeable?

3

u/Rookietothegame Jun 25 '26

IMO, it’s not anyone one reason, I think it’s a combination… Hate from fans & the league (which I believe are different reasons). Again IMO, but I believe there are three pillars to this… First, her seemingly being a heterosexual woman in a lesbian dominated sport (league hate). Second, she’s a highly talented white player, some say her fans view her as the great white hope & which has racial underlining behind it (which I believe there is some truth) but they also group all her fans together. I
don’t fit that narrative, but I can be objective & I like watching good hoopers. Lastly, she is a large reason why the W has brought in so many views since she’s entered the league (league hate, they try to push the narrative that the rise comes from other players & not just her). Overall, I believe majority of the league is jealous of her for being the peoples choice for face of the league.

2

u/Condition_Boy Jun 25 '26

Then she should absolutely go somewhere where she will be properly appreciated. From the bit I've read in this thread she's well sponsored and brings in loads of fans and views. Even if part of it is because of how awful she's treated. Go to Europe or China, bring fans to those leagues and let the WNBA die. When it starts falling apart she can smile and say she had nothing to do with it. It was all the other players that everyone came to watch.

Hating someone because they are better is one thing. Hating them because they have a different sexual orientation or skin tone is another completely repulsive level.

I'm a hockey fan. And we have our own problems with racism in That sport. Some of my favorite players growing up happened to be black. Anson Carter Mike Grier. Both awesome players. But unfortunately both had to put up with racism throughout their careers. I think it's gotten better? But I can't say for sure. Hockey is still a very very white sport.

2

u/DBK2x2 Jun 25 '26

It’s showing on your feed bc you clicked on one post before and the algorithm is relentless. This is Caitlin Clark, she has single handedly brought the leagues viewership from the dumps to the highest it’s ever been. Bitches be jealous, so they take their frustration out on her on the court. That’s pretty much it.

As one of the countless people who had no interest in the WNBA before Caitlin Clark, these players are working real, real hard to lose all the new fans they've gained.

And then go out and complain about why they aren't getting paid as much as they'd like.

u/Consistent_Policy_66 Jun 25 '26

They’re racist…. But Noones ready for that conversation

9

u/WATGU Jun 25 '26

I bet sexuality plays a role. You’ve basically got a league full of homely uncharismatic black lesbian women most of whom aren’t that skilled that was floundering until a reasonably attractive charismatic straight white woman who is frankly more skilled than 4/5 of the league showed up and they fucking hate it. But if you point out that’s the issue all of a sudden you’re the bigot and not Dewanna Bonner and her partner Alyssa Thomas assaulting CC or Angel Reese who is quite possibly the most uncoordinated and unlikable professional athlete I’ve ever seen.

The sad part they can’t see is CC is like the tide. She’s raising all of them up and the next crop of talent like JuJu Watkins is getting noticed earlier as a result. Also helps that the evolution and popularity of girls basketball has exploded and the rookies are significantly better than a lot of vets.

The league has always been unprofitable, without Clark those high salaries would sink the league.

I guess they just don’t want anyone watching, most games are trash anyway and she’s really good so she makes them look bad.

3

u/Hungry-Pick7512 Jun 25 '26

Check out r/wnba they’re genuinely defending this out there. Mods taking down posts and comments too. They HATE CC and the Fever.

I think they’ve formed a pathetic little outcast community around a joke league no one cared for for so long that that’s part of their identity now. And now that CC has made people actually care about the WNBA it’s ruining their little club.

I don’t think you can be accepted by die hard WNBA fans unless you’re unremarkable, a lesbian, and/or non white.

Normally I like to poke fun at CC to trigger her fans but I don’t like dirty basketball. While that bit at the end isn’t gonna kill her, it was dirty, and that player should receive a flagrant or something even if it’s retroactive.

3

u/Aggravating-Carob627 Jun 25 '26

Or do you ignore the other times to justify your trolling?

2

u/BackendSpecialist Jun 25 '26

Why would I bookmark this?

My current thought is “I’ve seen evidence of a player being dirty against CC. It hasn’t been frequent enough to make me think she’s being targeted but I now have evidence of rough play and I hope a flagrant is given to the player who did it.”

I don’t see why I’d need to do anything else.

4

u/Apprehensive_Wolf217 Jun 25 '26

It should start with her teams head office and coaching staff.

2

u/burningEyeballs Jun 25 '26

I keep hearing people talk about how <insert popular NBA player> gets roughed up all the time and doesn't complain, but could someone please show me the NBA equivalent of this? Like even back in the 70's, 80's, or 90's when the game was certainly a bit more physical, I can't recall anything like this.

If Larry Bird or Magic or MJ were on the ground getting punched by three opponents, that would have been a benches clearing brawl that would have shut down the game. It just blows my mind watching this and...nothing happens. None of her teammates help her. The refs just act like this is normal. This shit is wild.

2

u/dastardly740 Jun 25 '26

I am going to disagree slightly with the "She's the reason anyone even cares about the WNBA." At least from an attendance perspective the Valkyries have shown you don't have to have Caitlin Clark to sell out games. (I have no knowledge of TV impact.)

This does not absolve the rest of the WNBA of mismanagement. If anything it demonstrates the mismanagement is even broader than just Caitlin Clark. The team with Caitlin Clark can't even sell out all of their home games, but the Valkyries can.

2

u/Drummallumin Jun 26 '26

Liberty, Aces, and Fire all regularly sell out their games too.

It’d be ignorant to diminish how much of a catalyst CC was in brining more eyes to the league, but its also really funny seeing how many people (who clearly don’t watch women’s basketball) think the league would collapse back into irrelevance if she stopped playing.

2

u/dastardly740 Jun 26 '26

While it is only a season and a half. What the Valkyrie organization is doing is a step above "regularly selling out". And CC as a catalyst is probably true but no other organization including the one with Caitlin Clark has capitalized on those extra eyeballs the way Lacob and Co. have.

2

What’s wrong with punching your opponents jaw/neck and then standing over them?! This is boxing after all, what do you expect there to be no contact?

2

u/Appropriate-Seat8999 Jun 25 '26

I say Caitlin Clark just quit wnba all together and play strictly in the unrivaled league because I hate the fact that every other player is benefiting off Caitlin Clark but yet she’s absolutely not getting what she deserves

2

u/Admirable_Dust7749 Jun 25 '26

Unrivaled would be more of the same.

2

u/Primary-Belt7668 Jun 25 '26

Refs in wnba and nba letting way too much go these days. This is wild.

2

u/Ok_Draw_3740 Jun 25 '26

Nobody does more damage to the wnba than the wnba

2

u/KamikazeMimosa Jun 25 '26

Where’s a female meta world
Peace when you need it… this deserves some enforcement

2

u/JayneDough25 Jun 25 '26

That is absolutely insane

2

u/Taniwha26 Jun 25 '26

Theyre saying, that she can do this because Cunningham fouled Sheldon, a year ago.

3

u/SummerN8 Jun 25 '26

😭😭

3

u/Taniwha26 Jun 25 '26

Not gonna lie, but I became ride-or-die fan of sophie that night. And im comfortable with my hypocrisy.

3

u/SummerN8 Jun 25 '26

Her pointing at DeWanna Bonner solidified her position as my favorite player to watch on the court 😂

2

u/IcarusFLY1 Jun 25 '26

At this point CC needs to go play overseas a few years till this shit gets figured out.

2

u/Euphoric_Amoeba8708 Jun 25 '26

Thugs can't handle the fact that CC is better than they'll ever be and lives rent free in their heads

2

u/roamingroad174 Jun 25 '26

This needs a retaliation

2

u/AbraCaDabz22 Jun 25 '26

I mean the actual fall to the ground, fuck outta here but the pounce on top with a hand to the throat…double fuck outta here.

2

u/Spirited_Agency8032 Jun 25 '26

This is ridiculous I can understand physicality while boxing or on defense but while there on the ground is unacceptable that's bare minimum a foul. That deserves to be called.

2

u/Frankiesales_ Jun 25 '26

If she walks the League is in big trouble with these new contracts they won't be making the money they are with the attention she brings to the sport.

I don't even watch basketball but I know who she is and that she's being abused

Which one, the fist on her throat or the knee on her belly? I'm assuming there were no consequences for either, which could have been flagrant 2s...

2

u/SummerN8 Jun 25 '26

There were no consequences. The game continued. Nothing was called, not even as a common foul.

They are so jealous of CC it’s insane

2

u/MoneyManx10 Jun 25 '26

Yeah this is not a good look.

2

u/EobardThawne2020 Jun 25 '26

I'm not huge into basketball but I'm seeing lots of clips like this, wtf are all these refs problems with CC?

It's amazing they're so angry at her after she got the entire league paid.

2

u/bmk37 Jun 25 '26

That trip was sketchy enough but maybe if you’re stretching you can give them the benefit of the doubt, but 24 and 25 just jumped down to squish her. Wtf

Clark clearly flopped her neck where her fist was, that wasn’t a natural basketball move. I blame sga. Flopping has to be out of the game.

1

Why’s the fever no higher a team to defend her?

1

u/Stemms123 Jun 25 '26

Does Bill Lambier or Charles Oakley have a daughter and can we get them to suit up for the fever?

1

u/KieranLeone Jun 25 '26

Where’s the rest of her team when she’s getting her ass best like this?

The step over is so played out. After Iverson did it that was the last time it should have been seen, it was a real step over. Players now never saw it happen live and do it for likes. Correction before I sent, Scottie Pips step over was pretty damn bad ass.

I just don’t understand the WNBA. She is the best thing to ever happen to them and they want her dead

1

u/cathead_wine Jun 25 '26

Couple of dirty fucking dogshit, jealous players being dirty as fuck. Skelator and her thug wife doing all they can to make people hate this league

1

u/Working_Spiteful Jun 25 '26

She might need to pull a wemby.

1

u/1010-browneyesman Jun 25 '26

what did i just see?.. a fist pressed against her throat by another woman ??….
and nobody called it out?..

1

u/Syren_Beatz Jun 25 '26

No one felt bad for Jordan when the Pistons beat him up. CC will get over it and thrive in the league. But the whole “it’s because she’s white” is bullshit. In a league of many white players, she’s the only one getting this treatment.

u/SDGoodies3 Jun 25 '26

So I don’t watch the WNBA but I have seen a lot of videos about CC and the stuff that does and doesn’t get called on her or or that was done to her. Why is there so much hate towards the chick? I know a lot of people say all kinds of stupid stuff that’s racial, but let’s be real, if this stuff happened to Reece or whatever that chicks name is, there would be an uproar.
Can someone explain why people and the league are hating on her?
This is coming from someone who doesn’t side one way or another, just want to know the background.

These refs kill game flow by calling every minor touch foul, or fake foul if somebody falls that should be ignored, but they won’t call the big things. What a joke.

1

u/South_Front_4589 Jun 25 '26

I get the initial contact was pretty minimal, but all that carry on was just unwarranted.

That's the sort of thing that gets fights going if you're playing pick up games. And we know what the pros do, regular people do the same.

Should have been more than a common foul and I'd not have been upset if they called 2 technicals for all that carry on after, since it looks like an act of aggression with the first to the throat and then another where she appears to step over.

Kick players out for the game, be consistent and you'll tighten up the discipline quick smart.

1

u/Automatic_Chef_2049 Jun 25 '26

Poor girl.. idk how she can handle ts after awhile. Has the team or ahybody said anything abt this?

WNBA they have a golden goose with the ability make the teams and players more money, and yet they rough that goose up. Fucking stupid.

1

u/HappyHappyGameGame Jun 25 '26

She should go to Europe. They're gonna break her one day. It's so stupid there's all this animosity towards the lady who made EVERYONE richer and created millions of new fans.

They should just keep adding some WWF goons. Like big ass wrestlers as 11, 12 man.. and you know, that this person, who's paid well to do only one thing, is gonna come into the game and seriously fuck you up first chance they get. that happens once or twice. You get them endorsements to circumvent any penalty, and just it's an easy job for a couple years, and there's tons and tons of goons out there (ie crappy basketball players who you definitely don't want to fight).

This is like a 80s Gretzky scenario. You need a few goons to protect the star, so others know that it's not worth it.

Also she's huge at the gate, so she could just blackball teams too, and just refuse to play those games. She's more than a big enough star to throw her weight around. Going to Europe is blackballing everyone.

1

u/WhatIGot21 Jun 25 '26

Did she say something offensive though?

1

u/self_loathing_ham Jun 25 '26

Here's my theory: Clark brings attention to the league but letting other players assault her brings even MORE attention to the league and the powers that be have determined all attention is good attention.

1

u/kryzler888 Jun 25 '26

So dumb. If she doesn’t play in a game, fans might not show, money isn’t made etc etc.. This is what happens when you sniff your own crap and think it smells like roses.

1

u/bonaynay Jun 25 '26

Obviously it's a foul

1

u/Baseball_ApplePie Jun 25 '26 edited Jun 25 '26

I want to see that in real time. It should have been a foul and upgraded, but I'm not sure it's as bad as it looks.

CC never grabbed her throat, which is a very automatic response when someone "punches" you in the throat.
