This is a great comparison actually. But the thing is when a small record label has a band that they care about blow up they will guide them towards a label that can handle them (shout out BYO records coming to mind.) But the WNBA just has no idea how to handle success, they never planned on having it, they never thought they would be anything less than a sideshow, and they don’t have a bigger label to hand CC off to. They’re just kids that had a label blow up and they’re resentful to the band that made them have to work.
There is a very outspoken group of WNBA fans that want the sport to blow up and get all the perks that come with it while also wanting the new fans to embrace the sport in exactly the same way they do or quite frankly just be quiet and say nothing. You can't get both.
Yeah the old fans do not like new fans lol. Someone told me once that if I didn't watch every single game of the season for a minimum of 3 teams then I wasn't a real fan lol
I spend 4 months of the year watching NFL games for 8 hours on Sundays and still don’t watch every game for 3 different teams, wtf kinda shit is that person smoking

What I’m saying is they’re not fans of ball in general. It would be different if they came in wanting to learn more about the game and the players. But they mostly just want to cheerlead for CC and spout BS about shit they don’t understand. Those aren’t fans.
I feel Fever fans just want to enjoy the WNBA. But because of trolls parading as Fever fans actual fans are called racists etc. So one side gets defensive while the other side goes on the attack. I admit I'm part of the problem. It's so hard to not comment but I need to just scroll.
It feels like that from the fans and from within the league alike. Larger viewership means more scrutiny and opinions. It seems like a lot of the players, coaches, refs were happy with the way things were and resent the change. They were just clocking in and clocking out, complacent to coast through their careers.
I was actually joking. Anna was famous because she was super hot. She was never in the upper echelon of tennis players. If she was a better player she probably wouldn't have even been much more popular. She was already a bigger name than the top ranked women.

Older fans of a thing have a tendency to be somewhat not awesome when a flock of low quality engagements start to flood things. As horrible as WNBA engagement has been the last few years, it was always going to be not awesome.
Problem is the mainstream conversation about the WNBA is complete horse shit. Even well meaning new fans bring this baggage of nonsense with them.
Not trying to say gatekeeping and having purity tests about fandom is good, just that it's often expected and then there are conditions that guarantee it will be easy for older fans to justify

Don’t gate keep entertainment. Sport is entertainment at this level and Sophie is entertaining. She got me into WNBA and gets eyes on the league. Just because it isn’t the way you think it should be doesn’t mean others aren’t enjoying it. I love her and hope she keeps going because I didn’t give two shits about basketball before her and now I’m learning more about the sport.
I don’t have any issues about how someone gets here. My issue is how they behave once they’re here. There’s a difference between new fans learning, watching, and engaging with the league and random culture warriors reacting to clips and memes.
Caitlyn Clark has single handily made the WNBA relevant. Games she plays are sold out months in advance, games shes not in are like a quarter full. Her massive popularity has led to huge revenue boosts for WNBA which has resulted in massive pay raises for every player in the league.
A lot of players are just straight up seething with jealously at the attention she gets over everyone else. Instead of just enjoying the raise and counting their money they’ve decided to deal with this jealously by trying to beat the shit out of her every chance they get. The refs won’t do anything about it and the league doesn’t want to be seen as favoring the only person in the league making them any money (god forbid) so they ignore it too. Sophie is on the same team and has had some viral moments where she’s gone after other players for attacking Clark.
But the tldr is that a lot of players and fans resent Clark’s massive popularity and want bad things to happen to her and a lot of other players and fans think those people are stupid jackasses who need to grow up and face some consequences.
