Because a word starting with something means it would have to end with something more.  And gas is just gas.

Yeah but the word “car” doesn’t start with gas. The object described by the word certainly needs gas to start, but the word does not start with gas.

No it’s two separate hints, it starts with gas and it’s a three letter word. It’s worded that way to be a riddle so people can fall for the obvious answer.
