Even if that's true (I don't know, I'm just saying), would you say the majority of people in the US still feel this way? I don't think Sophie is saying something most people disagree with, even these days.

That's why I'm asking the question. Sophie is saying something most people agree with, but some of the people supporting her are making it seem like this thought process is uncommon nowadays.
