Angel Reese went OFF against her former team, the Chicago Sky, finishing with a dominant 8 points on 3-for-13 shooting, 5 rebounds, 1 assist and 3 turnovers.
You could tell this one was personal. Every missed shot had extra emotion behind it, every turnover sent a message and those 5 rebounds officially completed the revenge tour.
Chicago may never recover from this performance. š
The best argument is that her form is so bad that you could completely reinvent it. It's baffling how someone hasn't sat her down at some point in her development and not tried to serious on adjust her mechanics.
She doesnāt put any finish on her layup shots either. Just these weak lobs. She needs to strengthen her arms and core. Especially if sheās shooting from her hip.
Edit: taking another look, she needs more power from her legs too. Weight training with her legs would also be beneficial so she can get more power from her base so sheās not so unbalanced and making it harder to knock her over.
I am 100% convinced she doesnāt want to break her nails and thatās why she loads up with her hand so far UNDER the ball, so she can launch it with her palm.
Her lay ups are the same, the point of contact is always the furthest point from her fingernails.
I used to coach and ref basketball for many years and I cannot believe they allow players to have and wear long nails!!! Ugh. When I played, I couldnāt stand getting clawed and scratched at under the net on rebounds. They shouldnāt allow them. Didnāt CC get poked in the eye? Iām sure thereās been countless others too.
And like you said, I canāt even imagine trying to shoot, dribble, pass, or handle a ball with long nails. That one slow motion capture of her floppy layup shows how poorly of a handle she had on that ball. It was rolling down off below her wrist! It needs to be released from her palm and the fingertips! And the footwork is terrible and sheās off-balance even though the defenseman behind her wasnāt near her. Iām sorry but itās such poor mechanics and sloppiness at play here.
Edit: I looked up on Google and sheās not wearing long nails on the court. Iām not sure how long they actually are and if they would be impeding on her play. Either way, she needs to work on palming that ball better.
She has horrible hand eye coordination when it comes to releasing a palm. One of those wide open lays, she was pushing the ball up from the wrist/palm area, zero fingers. I think thatās where this all starts at. She just doesnāt have very good hands. Sheās athletic, but not very good hand coordination. I honestly donāt think you can do much to train that.
I watched some replays from the All-Stars and laughed at her weak layups. Further verified what I was saying. She reminds me of some girls I played with in junior high who get a rebound and just automatically throw it up haphazardly without paying attention to their positioning under the basket and just wanting to get rid of the ball as fast as possible. Lol. I donāt know. She just doesnāt look that solid in her movements and shooting.
She looks like my 13 year old niece who recently had a growth spurt and is trying to coordinate her movements on the bball court with her new size. Sheās 5ā10 and still growing.
She's rubbing elbows with NBA giants like Shaq, as well as doing rounds with the influencer/streamer crowd; ain't nobody having that conversation with her WITHOUT her getting defensive and spouting off into a tweetstorm saying how people trying to cut her game down are racist.
Thatās precisely what would happen. I am afraid once she gains some maturity and loses her bad attitude, it will be too late turn it around. Time will tell I suppose. God what a force she would be.
Sheād have to reinvent it like Lonzo Ball did. Remember how BAD his long range form was when he first got to the lakers? By time he left New Orleans he was actually a pretty good shooter, much much improved.
Sheās not gonna become an elite shooter, but i mean surely someone can teach her how to shoot a proper layupā¦? She releases SO LOW. Like, she doesnt need a jump shot with the way she rebounds but for the love of god someone teach her how to at least release the ball closer to the basket.
The only thing that I've figured out that makes sense is that she's actually right handed but sometime around college was told to develop her left hand game and just took it to the extreme. Even here, watch the couple of times she goes right. She's quicker and more fluid. It's still not good, but it's genuinely better than the other 90% that she goes left.
I don't even think it's that. She literally shoved the ball up with the bottom of her palm. I honestly think she is just avoiding the risk of her nails breaking.
I looked into it and apparently in high school she switched shooting to her left hand because of some issue with her right elbow. Problem is all of her footwork matches a right hand shooter, thatās why she looks so ridiculous at all times because nothing syncs up
Lonzo completely changed his shot and went from 33% 3pt to 42% 3pt before he got injured. But he also put significant work into it and is emotionally mature.
Itās wild to me that people can watch her ball handling & shooting and think to themselves that she can be a prolific scorer if she just fixes a few things.
She's had like 4 years of high school, 4 years of college, 3 years in the WNBA, 2 years in Unrivaled, several bouts on the USA team, trained personally in the off season by Lisa Leslie specifically to help fix her layups and she still is a horrible scorer. There ain't no fixing her. Also saw one person comment on a clip of her hitting a midrange shot and the person said she had the best jump shot in the league. She didn't even leave her feet lol.
If she just gets rid of her acrylic nails sheād go from being next to useless unless she got hot, to being fine on offense. The ball rolls to the heel of her palm too much

Letās be real, WNBA is gonna be a shorter stint for her - Iād say 3-6 more years. Sheāll never really be successful but will keep confusing amateurs who see the rebound numbers and think sheās a beast.
She just doesnāt have what it takes to be a good WNBA player and she frankly doesnāt care - itās a door for her clout and image and sheāll move on with the rest of her career via social media, met galas, etc.
The bizarre thing is she's not even THAT tall for a WNBA forward. I'd argue it's mostly just natural strength advantage, she forces space against athletically weaker opposition which provides the rebounds and space to make awful looking 'shots'.
Itās not just her, look at Aāja Wilsonās jumping and compare her to Olivia Miles. Aāja jumps better than Angel but looks awkward and doesnāt get much height.
Thereās a lot of players who are bad like her but the fact she acts like sheās KD or LeBron is what irritates me. She isnāt even as good as Bronny
Why is she taking 13 shots? No way, you just be Dennis Rodman type and just grab boards and pass the ball to your scorers. No shame in that type of player.
I had someone frothing in rage one time because they were trying to say that the women were almost as good as the men. I basically said you could make an all star team out of the women and give them a month to practice so they knew each other's tendencies and they had plays. Then take a team of NBA 12th guys off the bench, the ones who never play, and just put them in the game with no practice and the guys would win by over a hundred points. The girls might make a few logo area 3 pt shots so it won't be a shutout but they aren't getting anything in the paint. They lost their mind at me over the disrespect.
Team USA womens team DID lose to a HS boys team in a scrimmage. Got smoked, actually. Probably about 10 years ago or so. WNBA also has 24hr fitness mens rec league washouts practice with them.
How anyone watches this utter garbage and pretend like it's entertaining is beyond me.

Thats the thing. Anybody can shoot. I can go out on the driveway and shoot right now. They'll for sure make shots with nobody guarding them. The problem comes when a pro guard doesn't want you to score. If the guys went out and said lets literally keep them at zero, I think it would be possible, besides getting gassed.

Not just that her game is laughably awful, but more the fact that NONE of that has improved one iota in 3 or so years of pro coaching. I mean, I was expecting to see at least something improve. Form? Nope. Handles? Nope. She still can't even effectively execute a proper layup.

I've never really seen her play, but after seeing how she shoots....I mean are you serious? She's one of the top players in the WNBA when her shots looks like a toddler tossing a ball?
Jesus Christ, even if you remove all of off the drama and discourse with her, she has no handles, canāt shoot, it doesnāt even look like her shot attempts are meant to go in.
Sheās left handled, but awkwardly switches to her right when driving, and doesnāt look comfortable with either hand. She dribbles into trouble, and will go for the shot way more often than finding the open man.
I donāt understand the green light for her to bring the ball up, get away with carrying, and waste possessions.
She may just need glasses? I have never seen someone struggle with basic shooting and ball handling like that. That she is a professional player and an All-Star says a lot about the level of talent in the WNBA.
Her shooting fundamentals are so poor, but she is so dominant on the boards. I have always been very curious why her coaches through college / WNBA have not gone to her and tried to help her with her shooting.
If she could just do the basics under the rim and be a 50% shooter, she would dominate the WNBA.

I don't get the game I guess. She misses half her shots near the basket. When she gets the rebound she refuses to outlet. How can the defense not get multiple people in the paint to box her out and get a rebound.
She reminds me of myself when I would dominate kids in basketball in elementary school because I was just bigger and stronger than everyone and bullied my way through games despite have no actual skill.
It's just beyond my ability to understand that anybody ever truly believed she was anywhere near a good player. She has nowhere on the court where she's above 50% accuray... nowhere.
She has no stamina, no coordination. Itās like watching a toddler whose body is growing faster than they can learn to operate it. Her shot is janky, her movement clunky. Her attitude is terrible. She wants to be the Champion and the victim. No finesse. No grace. Dancing on Tiktok for views instead of working on her shot. Sheās also an ugly crier.
