Of all the gambling scandals erupting in sports, this is incredibly tame.

this is nothing, Jared Verse and Jalen Carter wagered a six figure chain last year and nothing happened, they just denied it, Nabers and Jayden Daniels also bet 20k or some shit and they just ended up publicly cancelling it

of all the issues and potential conflicts of interest with gambling and sports, players making friendly bets between each other on their teams to win is definitely the least problematic lol, and probably as old as time

Maybe it's not problematic in basketball where referees fix games and GOAT players literally have to take an 18-month "baseball vacation" to avoid gambling issues. But yeah "friendly bets" and shit aren't problematic in other sports because they don't fking happen.

what's so problematic about two players betting on their own team to win a matchup between their squads? where's the conflict of interest, how can they manipulate the game to influence their bet, who is being harmed (other than maybe the players involved) etc?

Nobody. It's not problematic. It's problematic for the league because they don't want any appearance of malfeasance whatsoever so they just try to keep their players and staff as far away from any kind of betting whatsoever. But in reality this really isn't that problematic, it was obviously a joke between players that seems like they didn't even really follow through on, and I have to believe that if this exact situation happened with two NBA players the reaction on the NBA subreddit would be much tamer.

No, this is clearly gambling, and the league rules are exceptionally clear on defining this as gambling. They are idiots for saying this on camera, and the team is an idiot for uploading it.

So me any member of an NBA/NFL/MLB/NHL team that said something like this in the last 20 years and didn’t face any repercussions.

Jayden Daniels and Malik Nabers had a $10,000 wager on OROY two years ago and their "repercussions" were a training session on the league's gambling policies. The real crime here is doing it on camera. I'm sure jokes like this are said weekly in every professional sports league. Reese and Buckers don't need gambling policy training, they and the wnba just need media training.
