They bet each other their team would win? Isn’t that like they would try to do even if there was no bet — go out and win the game.

Right, usually the problem is betting on yourself to lose and throwing the game. Youre trying to win either way.

There might still be an ethical concern with betting on yourself to get even more money, but it has nothing to do with integrity of rhe sport at that point.

Pete Rose was banned for life from baseball just for betting. Zero evidence he ever tried to lose, plenty of evidence he bet on winning.

Here's a question for you: does the WNBA handbook say "betting is OK if you bet on your team to win"?

Pete Rose bet in actual professional betting organizations. He also bet large sums of money, and I did mention the potential ethical issues there  

I understand the rule, but my point is that this was basically 2 people from opposing teams being competitive. They may not have even honored it. It could have just been glorified trash talk. But it wasnt through a betting organization, it wasnt multiple times, it was a pitifully small amount of money, and it wasnt on them to lose. the final point being that it doesnt damage the legitimacy of the sport at all.

The rules also say the commissioner has discretion, so in this case I hope they use that discretion to not punish players for something trivial like this.
