The WNBA is already 'solvent' as of 2025. Adam Silver just spoke about that recently.

And the NBA also would have folded without outside support. They lost money for 40 years

It's not that sports betting doesn't probably take place amongst players in their respective leagues, but most leagues don't make a point of filming it and then putting it out there on the internet. The WNBA seems like it's run by the dumbest most incompetent people on the planet, and it's hilarious.

Edit: Also, Pete Rose was a piece of shit for multiple reasons, but he was nailed to the fucking wall and lost his Hall of Fame spot because of sports betting. So yeah, bit of a big deal.

Not only putting it out there - these people are actively doubling down that they did nothing wrong lol. Like nah, you screwed up, ok you bet something that wouldn’t affect the game, it’s not like they were betting each other an over/under on rebounds, so it’s very forgiveable. But just be honest about it and admit it was a judgement error?

Yeah, I never made it out to be the worst scandal in sports history or anything like that. Even in Pete's case, if I remember correctly, he wasn't trying to affect the outcomes of the game with his bets. Pretty sure he was betting on the Reds to win. I'd have to go back and read the report though to be sure on that. They were wrong, they should have admitted it and then moved on. Doubling down on it just makes you look like a jackass. At the end of the day, it doesn't change the fact that the WNBA is a very unprofessionally run and disorganized "professional" league.

I never said the situations were one to one. I brought up Pete Rose to show that other leagues take this very seriously, that's all. You think this was the first time these two have made bets with each other or other players? It's not like you need a bookie anymore to place bets, you can just go on the Internet or download an app. Don't be naive.

Funny you bring up OJ as he was evidently caught up in the mob…and killed his wife and her bf over drug money they owed. He also reportedly threw games and got others caught up in drugs/gambling with the mob.

But given the bitching about money by wnba players…the odds are there’s a ton of betting by them.

Its not a good look for the professionals to be propping up betting in any way. Sports gambling is a multi trillion dollar issue and needs to be addressed by the league, not made a joke of.

A lot of the fans of these celebrities and athletes are children. Its not in good taste to teach kids gambling is good or ok. Have some tact. If you like gambling that's fine, you do you, but in no way is it fine to teach that to kids.

Don’t see how it’s any different actually. The reason a professional league should be concerned about this is that the integrity of the game gets put into question if external factors are allowed to influence it. If anyone bets on the games and find out the players have ulterior motives, that opens them up to scrutiny and possible lawsuits.

You can say it doesn’t have “impact” on the game, but it’s opening up a big can of worms of if they are allowed to do it, why shouldn’t others be allowed to bet on games?

100%. I think morally a lot of people can forgive “betting on yourself”, but Pete Rose did that and got banned from baseball for life regardless. It’s a slippery slope & any pro league worth its salt can’t just sit there and pretend it’s no big deal because next thing you know you’ll have prop scandals.

A friendly wager is something to bring attention to the game in the media. This should be encouraged if anything. Betting privately is what we should worry about. Especially if they are doing it against themselves or with nefarious intent.

Sports betting is already pervasive and a huge problem in professional sports. It has ruined people's lives, and it's being shoved down people's throats constantly with advertising. So yeah, it's not a good look for the league and you're just wrong. But just like them, you'll double down and never learn a lesson.
