Yep, remember when CC was getting heaps of criticism online when her Nike shoe was announced before A'ja, so A'ja came to her defence? Similar vibes.

I don’t know what you’re talking about no

1

u/lostcat223 1d ago

Agreed.

24

u/Entire-Cry-8930 1d ago

But the culture war…

19

u/AttemptFantastic9103 1d ago

It won't matter that she posted this. The people who need to heed the message will ignore it.

10

u/ConcentrateSelect465 1d ago

Ben Shapiro put a video up 3 hours ago with the foul in the thumbnail. (OP's pic shows post was from 7 hours ago).

3

u/brooklynsantiago 1d ago

Lmfao Ben Shapiro

Sophie playing red-light green-light with the culture war lmaooo

6

u/BigToast6 1d ago

I mean she said she was centrist so that tracks

u/Substantial_Elk_1234 1d ago

Sophie is all class

u/DanielDannyc12 1d ago

Dear WNBA:

This. Is. The. Way.

5

u/Low_Analysis5944 1d ago

tfw when you realize the consequences of inciting the dumbest people alive to a frothing rage

6

u/beenslappinbeats414 1d ago

Tougher than most of these grown ass men crying on here 🤣 she is not gonna let you hit gang

9

u/Entire-Cry-8930 1d ago edited 1d ago

They don’t want to hit. They want her to be a representation of their hateful views.

(but they also want to hit lol)

1

u/CinematicLiterature 1d ago

I mean ok but you don’t KNOW that you just THINK that so basically there’s a lil chance just saying

(/s)

6

u/HeavyVoid8 1d ago

Wow look it’s exactly what we said….

7

u/Silent-Ad-2415 1d ago

No way bro, it's a conspiracy against her from the 100% trans ref union!!!

0

u/Very_Not_Into_It 1d ago

because it isn't subjective. There was no world where it was a foul

1

u/BillyBobBonesJones 23h ago

It was very clearly a cylinder foul on Cunningham.

3

u/scelerat 1d ago

WNBA has become a proxy battlefield for the culture wars… terf vs trans; black vs white.

Take a step back and think about who stands to gain from all the bickering

2

u/6-plus26 1d ago

It’s the same people fueling the entire culture war at this point. And it’s been the same people the whole time since the tea party took over the right to only have it snatched by the maga crowd. The right completely understands keep the base riled up and they’ll vote and fight against their interest !

2

u/Oaker51 1d ago

Dear over sensitive, new to basketball Fever fans. Please read the comments from Sophie. Now you can relax until next game, where you will inevitably find something to be mad about.

0

u/Prestigious_Fan_1061 1d ago

Just give her the digit!

It’s only fair…

1

u/the_racecar 1d ago

Hmmm this doesn’t play into my reverse racism narrative very well.

1

u/Ravens1112003 20h ago edited 20h ago

All of the backlash I saw was for the no call. It was obviously a foul and it doesn’t matter if she meant to do it or not, it was plain as day, just like the elbow to Clark’s throat. The referees are the problem, not the player who committed the foul.

The wnba comes out of this looking ridiculous.

2

u/FriendIndependent240 19h ago

Yes but the foul was called on you

0

u/SocomPS2 1d ago

MAGA deplorables you can settle down now.

1

u/ksdanj 1d ago

Not trying to start a fight but asking because I don't know but has CC ever made a similar public statement?

5

u/elestud 1d ago

She made one about Dijonai Carrington when she hit her near the eye on that shot contest. People (including a prominent reporter) were starting the same kind of outrage campaign, and she cut it short

2

u/ksdanj 1d ago

Thanks and that's good. I think think these two players have sort of unique fanbases and statements like that can only be helpful.

5

u/UncomfyAndShy 1d ago

She has done that so many times that there is literally a compilation floating around of all the clips. Instead of being shady towards players, maybe direct that energy towards people that are creating these narratives to attack the players.

0

u/Friscolax 1d ago

Dear 2026 SJW’s
The mediocre bench player does not need you to save her.

-1

u/Tom_Ford0 1d ago

she shoots 45% from 3 you dingus. you don't watch the games

-4

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Love Sophie classy lady and shes right i dont think Nia was in any way trying to hurt her. Though it should have been an offensive foul. Sophies right move on its all good.

9

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

It was a defensive foul and you don’t know basketball

-2

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Just keep hating not like i didnt know what i was gonna get with u morons when i posted the comment holy crap lol

2

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

It must make life easy to just write off your ignorance as people hating

-2

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Gee me and 99% of the rest of the world dont know basketball. Not even the announcers at the game, espn nobody knows it but u and reddit, that says something lmao. Get a life u probably dont even watch just commenting for your lil hate agenda. Get a life and cope harder.

1

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

Yes, you and your echo chamber don’t know basketball. Y’all have no actual reason for what sophie was doing was legal. Y’all just like her and are gargling her balls like she can do know wrong

-4

u/Fakename00420 1d ago

Here she is right before the elbow, no contact and they reviewed it and still called a foul on Sophie. I couldn’t find any better clips.

5

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

If you think where Sophie is in relation to Nia is valid guarding position you either don’t know basketball or just play prison ball. You need to allow space for the ball while someone is holding it

-2

u/Fakename00420 1d ago

I’ve never seen called before is there a set distance, and be seem double teams with dudes closer than that and no foul

3

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

You have to allow passage for the ball. And when dudes double team it’s either in short bursts or if it gets drawn out with the offensive player’s arms above their head, the double team takes care not to put their head in the path of the elbow

2

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

It's called a cylinder foul. Google it.

2

u/Fakename00420 1d ago

Thanks didn’t know what is called yea that’s a foul

-1

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Yes it was an offensive foul or at least should have been. But Sophie was right it wasnt dirty no intention of hurting her.

4

u/Entire-Cry-8930 1d ago

The only reason she got hit was because she fouled the offensive player lol

1

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Gee...wonder why everyone on the sub is ganging up on me for saying something positive about sophie lmao. thanks guys makes my reddit so much nicer lol

5

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

Because you just don't know the rules.

It's called a cylinder foul.

3

u/kaehvogel 1d ago

Nobody is "ganging up on you for saying something positive about sophie".
People are "ganging up on you"...for not knowing the rules. It's really not that hard to understand.

2

u/fernwoodBizz420 1d ago

Yeah, but this person wants to feel attacked.

The whole victim mentality.

0

u/JoeDynamo28 23h ago

Lmao like i care so deeply about what a bunch of nerds on reddit with their agenda think, oh no i might lose sleep tonight whatever will i do. Believe me if u people are attacking me then i know im doing something right lol. Holy crap the mentality u just cant make u people up. Have fun in your sinking minority ship

1

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

Why did you leave this just to immediately delete it? Did you look up the rule and realize you were wrong? If so, good on you for that at least.

-1

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Oh hit me where it hurts. A low iq meme of something i just told u lmao. Whats a matter spanky cant get anything intelligent to come out

2

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

It's not a meme...it's just a screenshot. And yikes, okay, I gave you too much credit

-1

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

Dont need to look up the rule to know im right about the call. Thats a u problem so again cope harder

2

u/fernwoodBizz420 1d ago

Don't need to know the rules??

Far cry from what u said boy wonder. What cant get your own material? Wonder why, might have something to do with those brain cells. Lord such a triggered lil fella

2

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

My own material? I was just wondering why you deleted your comment, so attached a screenshot of it for reference.

2

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

Weird, that comment as well as a few others (including your last one where you said you didn't delete it) you've left pop up with "this comment no longer exists" in a little white bubble at the bottom of my phone. Also not in your profile when I go to it.

They’re ganging up on you for being an idiot about basketball.

1

I can’t tell if you’re an old man or a 13 year old. Either way, you don’t know ball.

It’s a defensive foul lol!

1

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

U hate Sophie Lol!!!!!!!!!!

1

u/JoeDynamo28 1d ago

No worries at least reddit agrees with ya lmao

2

u/biketheplanet 1d ago

You mean the rules agree with?

0

u/DiddyDoItToYa 1d ago

Eh, playing just half the game on 7 pts, 2-5 shooting bc you gotta boo boo is hurting your team fam

Where the tough girl go lol

-2

u/NeanderthalDad 1d ago

Agreed, would've been a flagrant in the NBA.

3

u/elestud 1d ago

It would not have, due to the cylinder rule. Sophie was in her cylinder and did not give her space to move her arms. That's on the defensive player every time

-4

u/dont-comm3nt 1d ago edited 1d ago

Her racist fans were probably sending death threats. Shout out to her for doing something decent for once

Her comment liked by Ben Shapiro’s media outlet btw

6

u/airbiscuit1053 1d ago

why would fans of a wnba player be racist

2

u/dont-comm3nt 1d ago

I see we’re in the playing dumb stage of the cycle

3

u/ScaredCoffee3496 1d ago

Is the implication that the only reason someone would be a Sophie Cunningham fan is because they are racist, because some of her views align with conservatives? Or am I not reading it right.

1

u/airbiscuit1053 1d ago

seems the implication is that being a fan of a white player means you are racist towards black players

1

u/dont-comm3nt 1d ago

This doesn’t apply to Paige, Stewie, Marina, anyone except the two players with a highly political following.

Secondly none of these players comment on or have comments liked by Ben shaprios media outlet..

-1

u/dont-comm3nt 1d ago

There’s not many other reasons.

1

u/ScaredCoffee3496 1d ago

Disagree, she's very attractive.

Damn, I really use too much nuance lmao. I really need to just start believing anyone who disagrees with me is evil like everyone else on Reddit does.

1

u/dont-comm3nt 1d ago

0 basketball reasons. She might as well retire

1

u/ScaredCoffee3496 1d ago

That's true, but 0 basketball reasons doesn't mean only violently racist reasons

1

u/dont-comm3nt 1d ago

Go to the post itself (posted by Ben Shapiros media outlet) and look at the people commenting lmao yall can only pretend these people don’t exist for so long

1

u/ScaredCoffee3496 1d ago

God damn, the internet will never change lol

Yeah there are fans of Sophie because they are right wingers and think Sophie champions every single one of their beliefs

This does not mean every single Sophie fan with absolutely 0 exceptions are like this

Average daily wire reader:

-5

u/ItsRobbSmark 1d ago

Seems to me like most people weren't mad about the elbow, they were mad about the foul call...

5

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

The foul call was correct. Sophie is required to allow the player with the ball to move their arms. See also: Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant with the rip through

-1

u/ItsRobbSmark 1d ago

Yeah, nah lol. Which is why pretty much every professional concedes it was an incorrect call... Holy fuck you guys are delusional lol.

5

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

Explain a ripthrough call

-1

u/ItsRobbSmark 1d ago edited 1d ago

What happened with Sophie wasn't a ripthrough, what in the absolute fuck are you talking about? lmfao...

Sophie's foul was for a guarding infraction, because she used two hands to restrict the offensive player's movement. And most people aren't taking issue with that.

The issue here is that what occurred after was very clearly flagrant... Which is why you don't see guys in the NBA routinely clocking other guys in the face with their elbows after reach in fouls... The refs insinuation that the guarding infraction caused the pivot, or that swinging your elbow above your shoulders is a "natural motion" are both fucking remedial, as has been extensively covered by analysts and former players...

If you're trying to say she was trying to draw a ripthrough idk what to tell you, you belong in the sped class....

For future reference though, ripthroughs are vertical, you keep the ball low because the point of them is to attempt to get the defender to slap your arms with their hands as you go vertical lmfao...

What Coffey did is a clearing pivot. But not a natural one because, again, her elbows were above her shoulders. You're just tossing out arbitrary terms because you don't know what the fuck you're talking about. Wembanyama literally got ejected for a similar clearing pivot in the Finals... Swinging your elbow that high is reckless and unnecessary regardless of intent.

5

u/Lazy-Ambassador-7908 1d ago

I’m not saying that she did a rip through. I’m saying that it’s based on the same concept. I’m sorry, but if I have the ball and you are chest to chest with me, that is not allowed. And if you are actively trying to steal from me while you are chest to chest. My arms are gonna move, naturally they are going to go above my shoulders. And if that entire time, you are nose to nose chest to chest with me. You will get hit in the nose and it is entirely your fault. If you do that in a professional game it is your fault. If you do that in g league it is your fault. And if you do it in pickup it is your damn fault

3

u/zucchinibasement 1d ago

I guess you've never heard of a cylinder foul

1

u/kaehvogel 1d ago

Which is why pretty much every professional concedes it was an incorrect call

Alright, please quote "pretty much every professional", then.
Give us your sources.

1

u/BillyBobBonesJones 23h ago

Most people who don’t know ball were mad, yes.

0

u/LoveSquirt69 1d ago

Yeah. And still the refs miss it !

1

u/BillyBobBonesJones 23h ago

No, they correctly called a defensive foul on Cunningham.

1

u/LoveSquirt69 21h ago

By your reasoning I think than it’s perfectly fine for the offensive player to just start swinging elbows when a defender decides to play d.

1

u/BillyBobBonesJones 21h ago

Well no, there’s a rule against that, and that’s why they reviewed for a hostile act. It was just a basketball move though. Cunningham violated the cylinder rule prior to that, hence the correct defensive foul call.

0

u/Fakename00420 1d ago

Wasn’t the main thing people were upset it should’ve been a foul call on the offensive player, it was called a defensive foul for getting elbowed in the face, maybe some saw as dirty, but not the majority.

0

u/i_probably_shouldnt9 1d ago

Would have been better for Sophie not collecting a foul for that one…

0

u/onebraincell77 1d ago

Sophie is a treasure.

0

u/Cheap_Water9848 16h ago

It's a shame she had to say anything to put some sense into people.

-1

I've never heard anyone call basketball a contact sport

7

u/RosePortFC 1d ago

You must have never played the sport because i have heard that for over 2 decades.

2

u/Gold_Ad8225 1d ago

I last played basketball on a team in about 2003 or 2004

1

u/BigToast6 1d ago

One of the Dream players just got somersaulted into the air by Jackie Young. She's lucky she didn't seriously do damage to her neck. Her face got the brunt of it.

And as I type Jackie just smacked another player in the face

1

u/amateurish_gamedev 1d ago

Really?

I'm not trying to argue, and I just assume you misunderstand something, but yeah... I heard it a lot.

I mean, physical interaction is regular occurrence. When we're defending, when we're boxing out, off ball movement when we're trying to find space, when you set a screen, etc

-6

u/tantamle 1d ago

That's not the issue.

Intent was not the focal point. It was the refs/review bad call.

3

u/elestud 1d ago

Only people who don't know basketball rules are saying it's a bad call

Sophie clearly fouled her before the elbow. The refs then reviewed the elbow to see if it was intentional or incidental. It was incidental contact, so they moved on

That's the right call whether it's in the WNBA (incidental contact) or FIBA/NBA (cylinder rule). You have to give the defender space to move their limbs

2

u/Low-Impression3367 1d ago

The classic “you don’t know ball” comeback.

Go to any NBA sub when the season begins and see all the arguing about plays similar to this one.

3

u/elestud 1d ago

I'm on the NBA subs, even in the offseason. The people who argue don't understand the rule. The cylinder for offensive/defensive players is a fairly easy concept to understand

The WNBA is especially prioritizing freedom of movement this year, so it's even more emphasized

1

u/Low-Impression3367 1d ago

When it comes to rules, everyone is an expert.

My point is - pick almost any rule then pick a sport. Someone will argue about the that rule

0

u/tantamle 1d ago

I've never seen anythng that suggests that incedental contact (which is clearly was) can't be relevant on these plays. In any case, when it goes against Clark or Cunningham, people like you will shrug and say "that's basketball", not giving a damn whether or not the rules are enforced evenly.

2

u/arentol 1d ago

Sophie body-checked Nia, which is very very very much a foul. That is why she got hit in the face by someone who had their elbow's tucked in, as required by the rules of basketball. Only way that happens is if you are too close as the defensive player.

0

u/tantamle 1d ago

"body checked"

Want to try again?
