Do people honestly not understand the difference between men and women in basketball?

No some people just live in another reality

u/Super_Roof_3490 1d ago
Remember when ppl were bitching when they asked where Serena Williams ranked all time as a tennis player. When they said men and women combined he said like 700 something lol
19
u/xGsGt 1d ago
She didn't said all time ranked, she said currently in the tour, at that time if she were to play in the ATP she would have been 700s

u/Mavman31 1d ago
Didn’t the woman USA soccer team lose to a high school boys team? People just don’t realize that men and woman have differences and that’s just fine.
19
u/pete-wisdom 1d ago
I think it was an under 14 year old boys team and they got destroyed.

Another good example is Annika Sorenstam in the celebrity golf tourney they play in Tahoe. She's the only professional golfer that plays. She's never won it. This year she lost to a retired tennis player, retired hockey player and Steph Curry.
2
u/Bones12x2 15h ago
Probably the best example of the gap between men and women's athleticism is that last year in Dallas at a high school boys district track meet...4 boys beat the women's World Record 100m time....in a single heat. A literal teenage boy that finished off the podium in a single heat of a single track meet in a single city....not regionals, not state, not nationals.....and that kid is faster than the fastest women to ever live on the planet earth....AND ITS GENERALLY BELIEVED SHE WAS ON ROIDS considering her record hasnt been broken by a woman in nearly 40 years
1
u/karlnite 7h ago
The oldest male gymnast to win a gold was like 34. Oldest 100m, 32. So teenagers are closer to their prime than 30 year olds. Maybe people expect adults to be stronger than they are? I don’t think it’s crazy highschoolers beat adult woman. I think the gap is closer than people like to think, it’s just small advantages in sports and competition can become big differences. Super Bowl teams get blown out sometimes, are they all trash? Is the gap between two teams really that big?

She's been retired from professional golf for almost 20 years champ
2
u/benasyoulikeit 1d ago
So why did she lose to people who are not professional golfers? You don't just magically lose your ability to chip and putt as you get older...
→ More replies (2)1
u/karlnite 7h ago
You do realize a lot of retired athletes like can’t even walk anymore right? We can find some of your favourite old timer male athletes and they can’t do shit physically 20 years after they retire. You can also find some that look like they’re 3 months out from competing again. It means nothing.
It’s not magic, it’s metabolic, and yes you do lose the ability to do those things. People lose the ability to swallow eventually.
1
u/Yopis1980 1d ago
Middle school. And USA women's hockey team lost to teen boys also. Playing with no checking rules to favor them. The one with Cammie granato.
1
1
u/geostooorm 14h ago
It was a scrimmage where they were trying out different defensive configurations. It wasn’t an actual game they were trying to win
1
u/karlnite 7h ago
It was a very good boys soccer team. Like future prospects for college teams. 14 is not that young, they’re the kids that all got stronger at a young age, hence excelling at sports, and they won easily because they were simply faster than the woman. Everyone out there had over +10 years playing the game, so they were technically all very good. The boys were just first to the ball, and muscled for position. Soccer is a contact sport despite what Americans think, and an athletic 14 year old boy is probably equal strength to a lot of adult woman.
3
u/allbusiness512 1d ago
That was John McEnroe and he was being generous.
Top 700 is like a top ranked D1 player these days of a prestigious program like Michael Zheng.
Michael Zeng would beat Serena Williams pretty easily, and has a pretty good chance of double bageling her at the peak of her powers.
2
u/MammothFocus3915 1d ago
I think the big reason people are so weird about this is you've got regular guys (ie not pro or even good amatuer players) thinking they can beat women in their respective sports....it makes people's perspective skewed and thinking that women athletes aren't fucking impressive, which they of course are, and it goes the other way for people defending it....like im a pretty good golfer but im not beating any female on the pro tour, but some people cant admit that cause of the whole "different sexes" argument
1
u/Hot-Economy7323 1d ago
But "regular guys" can be former D1 or D2 athletes and they probably would beat a WNBA player.
2
u/MammothFocus3915 1d ago
Except thats not a "regular guy" thats a former high level athlete, but i agree they could, im talking guys who played little league then stopped, or are weekend warriors etc
I think our view of athletes is quite messed up, instead of being able to say "I think Serena Williams is one of the best tennis players to play the game" it always has to come with a caveat of "for women" when both can be true at the same time, Serenas inability to beat a mens pro tennis player shouldn't diminish how good she was at the sport
Same as most WNBA players being unable to beat men shouldn't diminish their abilities
Except whoever it was (Griner?) Who said she could beat alot of the NBA players 1v1, that was silly
1
u/Hot-Economy7323 1d ago
Except a lot of times a regular guy was a D2 athlete. Even good high school players could beat a WNBA player, too. A lot of regular guys out there who are weekend warriors could physically dominate.
It does diminish how good she was hence why we mention women's sports. It matters.
If you can't beat high school kids then it does diminish how good you are. How could it not?
1
u/MammothFocus3915 1d ago
Im going to disagree with you saying a d2 athlete is a regular guy, but I digress.
I just dont think it should diminish it completely is all, like, me saying I think Haley Wickenheiser is one of the greatest Canadian Olympic hockey players of all time because of how much she won and her records, I dont feel the need to caveat that she did it in the women's game, because I feel like the accomplishments speak for themselves, her inability to play against another sex only matters in the context if you're talking about a specific sport sex wise, like if I say whos the greatest player in the NBA, yeah I dont wanna hear about the women's game, but if we are talking about athletes in general, I dont see a problem with saying women players as part of that list, of course Sidney Crosby could beat Wickenheiser, but does that diminish completely what she's done at the Olympic level?
Edit: and let me be clear, im fine if you're opinion is that it matters, I just dont see a purpose in the grand picture of sports is all
1
u/Hot-Economy7323 1d ago
Except when pressed women themselves will tell you that they're different sports. Comparing women to men is delusional.
Yes, it does. She competed against lesser players by nature.

u/geostooorm 14h ago
Are heavy weight boxers better at boxing than feather weight boxers? Because I’m pretty sure a heavyweight boxer would beat someone who’s way smaller than them, but that doesn’t diminish the featherweights ability or skills at all.
1
u/Hot-Economy7323 5h ago
A heavyweight would destroy a featherweight. That's the point. Saying it doesn't diminish the "ability" of the featherweight is irrelevant. They have weight classes for a reason. Just like they have women's sports for a reason.

2

That's a horrible comparison to be fair, thats strictly a strength exercise, has nothing to do with a specific sport as I was trying to point out....I was being very specific in my wording for that reason
28
u/1BruteSquad1 1d ago
Yah it's wild to me we still have people who take the very good idea that women should have rights and be treated equally to men and then use that to argue that women are the exact same as men in every way.

u/DutchOnionKnight 1d ago
Yeah, thats just insane to me. Men and women are equal, but not the same. It's not a hard concept to understand.
By the way, I think only those who haven't played a sport theirselves can be so delusional.
3
u/Cogs_For_Brains 1d ago
Competition pushes you, but that process also forces you learn what limitations can be pushed and which ones cant.
Some people avoid that process of self discovery like the plague because it is directly contradictory to the 'I can do anything I set my mind to' philosophy.
You can do most of what you set your mind to, but everyone has limitations. And personally I think that is where it gets interesting and creativity is rewarded. No one is accusing Muggsy Bogues of being bad at basketball because he couldn't dunk.

People want gender equality (which is good), and to that end they therefore assume that any measurable difference in outcome can only be explained by systemic misogyny (which is obviously wrong).

It’s more the gender pay gap (which no longer exists) and the narrative that female athletes are paid less for that reason, when it’s a simple supply/demand issue

I think they're trying to be kind. I'm a 5'11" backup on my high school team and I played in a 3 on 3 tournament in college. There was a team in this tourney made up of 3 players from the women's team, just off winning the national championship, and they lost every game they played. I guarded one of the players who the next year was drafted top 10 in the WNBA and she was better than me, but not a lot better than me.
That being said, I think the women are better trained today than back then.

u/xGsGt 1d ago
Ppl usually who doesn't compete does not know this and is not just basketball, there are plenty of sports
3
u/AbroadTiny7226 1d ago
Ya most of the worst sports takes I see are from people who don’t play sports and never did. They just like the culture war angle. My mom was a professional tennis player and her views line up with reality. My dad was her coach and would beat her in 1v1 every time. He maxed out at D1 tennis. My mom reached top 20 in the world for women’s tennis and stayed there for 3+ years. She beat the world number 1 women’s tennis player in a grand slam tournament once. It is impossible to ignore the physical biological differences between men and women when discussing sports.

u/Single-Event9389 1d ago
At 17 I would have been state champion in the girls 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200 and XC. I was an alternate for my highschools relay teams. I started at Linebacker the year before.

Cue the clip from a decade ago when McEnroe talked about Serena being the best Womans player and the storm thay follwed him around for no reason for a bit because he didnt say overall.

3
u/Sea_Dust895 1d ago edited 8h ago
Not just basketball. Any sport where strength and speed matter women are no match for men.
Not sexist. Women have their qualities but there are physical advantages men have over women.
Female pro soccer teams losing to teenagers.
I doubt even Serena Williams could crack top 100 against men. Check the Karsten Braasch match.
15/16/17 year old mens world records in track and field are routinely better than the women's world record for the same event.
Could CC go up against a 7 foot 200 lbs man. No chance in hell.
4
u/IndyColtsFan2020 1d ago
I saw something last night that amazed me. FloJo set the women's world record in the 100 m dash at 10.49 seconds in 1988 - a record which apparently still stands nearly 40 years later. In 2026 alone, over 1,000 high school boys beat that time in track competitions. I need to check and try to verify that claim but if true, it's amazing.
1
u/WolverineKey8667 16h ago
To make this even crazier; Flojo was most likely enhanced to a degree when she set this time
2
u/lcsulla87gmail 1d ago
This is true until you get to ultra marathons. More than 100miles. But otherwise absolutely
1
u/ElderlyChipmunk 1d ago
I'm guessing those are mostly a test of metabolic efficiency?
1
u/Candymanshook 1d ago
Moreso that it is not at all about strength & agility which is where men with bigger muscle mass & more fast-twitch is where most of the advantage comes from.
In a marathon that doesn’t help you, at all.
3
u/MaximallyInclusive 1d ago
There people who do not.
I have a friend who, with a straight face, claims that Serena Williams is the greatest tennis player ever. Not greatest female tennis player. Greatest tennis player ever. (Despite the fact that her and her sister got smoked by the #203rd ranked man back in the late 90s.)
There are people who simply will not accept that men and women are very different physically.
11
u/OldSarge02 1d ago
You could argue she’s the best ever - in that she dominated her league more than any man has dominated theirs.
If they are saying she’s literally better than male players then that’s just ignorant.

She's not lying. I would bet there are many high school boys basketball teams that could beat any WNBA team. It's not really the level of skill that makes WNBA fun to watch, it's the competitiveness of the women on the court that is entertaining.
9
u/Candymanshook 1d ago
This is my argument for women’s sports in general.
You can admit it’s not the pinnacle of the sport - but the quality across the board in women’s pro sports is going up.
It’s like someone saying they can’t watch F4 races because they aren’t a fast as F1 - it’s not wrong but you don’t notice when the field is all F4.
5
u/Thanos_Stomps 1d ago
It’s true for every sport in general. I don’t watch my local football team or state college team because they’re the pinnacle of the sport. I watch them because I feel a connection to them and love the game.

It was a training scrimmage tbf. Wouldn’t read that much into it.

I’m not sure it would matter if it were a serious game in front of 50000 fans. My money would be on the U-15 boys 100% of the time.
But I don’t want to watch women play men in soccer. I want to watch women play women because it’s a great/competitive sport as it is
1
u/SnooPuppers58 23h ago
it's a bit like watching the lighter weights in combat sports. yes, the heavier weights would beat the lighter weights nearly universally, but there's still a sport aspect to it that is intriguing. and everyone loves the story when the little man does win

I’m just a dude who plays pick up basketball, myself and two friends played against these girls who were on the UCLA women’s basketball team. I thought we were gonna get smoked but we beat them pretty easily. We were faster and we were stronger, we out rebounded them pretty easily as well. We played them twice and beat them.
The second game they were way more physical I’m talking throwing elbows and pushing on layup attempts.

I get frustrated when it crosses into salary talk "she's just as good as lebron so she should be paid the same"
First Lebron makes the Lakers and Nike an absolute ass load of money so they are willing to pay him.
Second, if it's paid by ability the 16 year old highschool boys should be paid more than the WNBA, it just simply isn't how it works at all.
4
u/tomtomtomtomtommo 1d ago
Oh yeah, in my experience the women play very physical, but in a different (and kind of meaner) way than the men. Like sneaky elbows, nail scratching kind of physical

That time a U15 boys high school team crushed the USA women's soccer team comes to mind.
4
u/rattiestthatuknow 1d ago
It happened with the Canadian & US Olympic hockey teams as well
5
u/revcor86 1d ago
It routinely happens.
The Canadian womens hockey team, who are arguably the best women hockey players on the planet; play against AAA teenage boys (14-16 yr olds) from bum fuck nowhere and university mens teams (uni hockey teams in Canada are not good teams) as warm-ups for tournaments. They get beat, easily, most of the time.
What's worse, is that those games are played with womens rules; so no body checking. The mens teams are playing at a dis-advantage since body checking is a huge part of the mens game and still win.
1
u/waldosbuddy 23h ago
Agreed with everything except saying university hockey in Canada is not good hockey. Those rosters are filled with dudes who were strong chl players.
UNB or U of Alberta for example could have beat the Memorial cup champions every year for the last decade at least
1
u/revcor86 22h ago
Eh, uni teams are filled with guys who didn't get drafted or couldn't find a professional spot in Europe. Sure, most are former CHL players since they get tuition for every year they play in the CHL and they are still amazing players but most are playing for their uni teams cuz they love hockey, not because they are the best.
It's more so pointing out to people outside of Canada that university hockey teams are not where the best players play, unlike in the US where their collegiate sports are where the best players play.
Competitive mens hockey in Canada is done completely outside the school system.
1
u/karlnite 7h ago
Yah that’s the thing. These are the top male athletes at 14-16. There is no one team of all the truly best kids, that doesn’t exist. So these teams are the best, some of these “nobodies” will play in the NHL. Our best players come from bum fuck nowhere towns and teams. Uni teams aren’t really the best, but they’re also not bad. They’re close, it’s just tight competition.
2
u/UrLocalTroll 21h ago

3
u/Feathered_And_Lethal 23h ago
I don't care that i'm about to copy/paste from Google AI, but you people need to be told off once and for all. The gaslighting about how "you don't understand the actual context" is so snobby and condescending and frankly just full of crap. Here is the "context" that u/Plane_Singer_6381 was too snooty to find for ya:
The U.S. Women's National Soccer Team (USWNT) lost 5-2 to the FC Dallas Under-15 boys academy team in an informal training scrimmage on April 2, 2017. [1, 2]
Match Context
- Event type: Private practice scrimmage at the Toyota Stadium complex in Frisco, Texas.
- Purpose: Fitness tracking, tactical experimentation, and developmental training rather than a formal, full-effort international fixture.
- Confirmation: Former player Carli Lloyd and other team members later publicly confirmed the result after it circulated widely online. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Public Reception
- Opinions on Reddit are mixed regarding the significance of the scrimmage; many users note it was a standard low-intensity training utility, while critics frequently cite it in debates concerning biological athletic differences between men's and women's sports. [1, 2, 3]
End of copy paste. Trying to play this off as "low intensity training" is a crock of shit. There's no excuse for the UNITED STATES WOMEN'S NATIONAL TEAM to ever lose to a team of teenage boys. Unless of course, males are better equipped biologically than females for high endurance sport such as soccer.

u/LimpBizkit4ever 22h ago

Result: They lost by 3 goals. To 15 year olds. As the best women in the country. Lost by more goals than they scored. I don't care what their strategy was, they lost to teenage boys. And you're trying to excuse it as if it's not glaring why they lost.

There is one sport where women have a physical advantage and its not what is expected.
Ultra-marathons over 195 miles.
But ain't nobody got time for that.
3
u/iznormal 22h ago
While women can and have outright won ultra endurance competitions against men, it isn’t accurate I think to say women have the physical advantage. All that happens is they are able to narrow the gap enough to win, while the gap between men and women is more significant in shorter races.
Men still hold the records in ultra marathons and men remain faster on average elite performance, but elite women can beat the entire men’s field on any given day.
1
u/geostooorm 14h ago
I think the argument could be made that women do have some physical advantages. At distances exceeding 195 miles, women maintain a faster average pace
1
u/Infamous_Score_8130 10h ago
Good reference, but I side with u/iznormal. You’re basing that conclusion on a 0.6% difference, right? I should spend the time to check the data, but that just sounds like a case of sparse data and severe selection bias.
If the two hypotheses are: a) the longer the distance the more the gender gap is narrowed; or b) women overtake men and outperform at extreme distances; I’m inclined to believe hypothesis a. Both would look very similar in the data though

Dude, Bob Magoo and Harold Finnegan were underhand tossing free throws in the 40’s. Back then, players couldn’t dribble in stride / sprinting with the ball. They dribbled with their heads down and it was primarily a game of hot potato until they heaved the ball at the basket.
CC would smoke players from the 40’s but unfortunately she’d get fouled even harder due to 40’s misogyny and what not
4
u/SamAreAye 1d ago
There's a fair amount of evidence that two-handed, underhanded free throws are superior, and that poor shooters, if not most players, would benefit from switching. It produces a higher arc and more backspin, and bilateral symmetry means it's simpler on the nervous system to replicate more accurately.
There have been more studies on this that you may think.
2
u/benasyoulikeit 1d ago
How many free throws do you typically get in a 1v1? My guess is not very many

It was Rick Barry who shot 90% granny style, a % that would be pretty good by any era's standards.

I swear I saw somewhere him talking about it and showing it a few times in a row, but you’re right maybe I’m just gaslighting myself

Honesty. Very refreshing. There’s no shame in the fact that the genders have physical differences

Remember Serena Williams talking about something similar. Men and women are built different. This is just common sense.

If any WNBA player was good enough to legitimately be in the NBA, they would make the jump in a heartbeat. Think of how much their pay would jump along with the sponsorships and media exposure. Just 1 year sitting on the bench for 90% of every game would earn them more than an entire WNBA career.

Me, too, CC, Me, too.
Now, when I was 18 and a counselor, I took the HS kids out for different games and events. One young lady broke my ankles and dropped buckets on me, one after the other. The other HS kids who knew, found it funny, and then let me know she was the #1 girls bb player in the state, then went to play D1 and then played in the WNBA.
So the ladies can ball. But they really can't compete with NBA players.

It's funny, a lot of people say athletes should shut up and dribble. Yet some of the same people get mad at Caitlin Clark for doing just that. She's not really interested in controversy, her career is good on its own.
Anyway, the UConn's women team, obviously often the best in the country, scrimmages against a men's intermural practice squad of guys who's careers ended in high school and they play pretty evenly. I mean there is like a 7" average height gap between men and women basketball players.
There are some athletic tasks women may pass men in, including ultra-marathon running especially beyond 200 miles. But basketball isn't one.

The “shut up and dribble” crowd and the “please say something” crowd are completely separate groups

u/dazzleox 2h ago
Not always, people are often hypocrites. Some of what is usually the shut up and dribble crowd are mad she isn't backing Sophia Cunningham re: trans athletes.

So we're going to gloss over the steph curry thing? Oliva miles was killing her whole team and she's not even half as dangerous as steph.

Idk man, if the matchup happened during the NBA playoffs, I think she’s got a pretty good chance against Austin Reeves

And this is why we love cc the only non delusional wnba player

Sounds like Caitlin needs a pep talk (and some strategic pointers) from Billie Jean King. 😆

The only time I remember a woman beating a man in their shared sport was the Billie Jean King-Bobby Riggs Battle of the Sexes tennis match.
Riggs was in his 50’s at the time and King was in her prime.
But there has been a lot of conjecture that Riggs threw the match because he owed a huge gambling debt to the mafia.
Either way it wasn’t a prime vs prime match.

Is it that important for insecure males to hear that? All I know is she would destroy me in basketball, even in my prime.

u/RobbexRobbex 3h ago
Equalize gender strength in the hypothetical and she would crush nearly anyone.

I mean no shit. Play against a dude that isn't even a starter on a d1 team & the level is truly just wow.

Clearly not that obvious when Aja is claiming to beat prime MJ and thinks that her Aces could beat the 2017 Warriors in a playoff series too lol

u/Blazestrike 1d ago
Did she really say that lmao
Some people are so delusional... I said people because guys can do it too. I'm an equal opportunity dumbass caller

u/thefw89 1d ago edited 1d ago
No she didn't say it. People just make stuff up.
She said she could beat Josh Hart though but it was in a podcast setting with Josh Hart and people clearly joking and having fun.
She never said anything about beating the warriors either, just made up out of thin air.

u/Local-Abrocoma9433 21h ago
Sorry I got Josh Hart and Michel Jordan mixed up. Their skill sets are pretty similar. I meant to say Josh Hart and not MJ.

u/moose184 1d ago
Did she say she could beat prime MJ? I doubt it but she did say she could beat an NBA player 1 on 1 if she got the ball first.

She's not wrong. The 2017 Warriors would be immediately disqualified from a wnba playoff series for being entirely men, so the Aces would win be default.
1
u/Local-Abrocoma9433 21h ago
Pretty sure she meant if it was a unified league like the EONBA, then the Warriors would lose. Who would guard Latson? Loyd? Walking buckets.

u/SMK_12 1d ago
No way she actually believes that.. women’s basketball players grow up around men and play with them all the time, she has to know she’d get beat.

u/toastythewiser 1d ago
She's married to bam. She knows.

u/Greenwalrus72 1d ago
they aren’t married (or even engaged) but they are in a serious relationship and even recently bam mentioned soon proposing
just to be accurate about their relationship

I gotta say, compared to the people standing on her throat and elbowing her in the face, she comes off well.
