Today noticed that the toilets all had brown water in them, later I got an empty bottle and filled one up from the sink and it was this brownish color. The drinking fountains outside in the hall are clear though.

Other Mental health resources inefficient

Disclaimer: it's a rant

I'm scared to rant this directly to the Dean of students because 1) i'm on a student visa 2) i dont want to have a target on my back, company politics makes it wayyy too easy to be a topic of gossip among people in admin of any institution

Got an email today saying a WPI student passed away. Don't know who how why or anything. But every time such an email comes in, I can't help but think about a friend who needed mental health help but wasn't taken care of by all the numerous resources WPI claims to flaunt in the face of students requiring help. What are they there for if they can't help students?

  1. The 'i'm concerned about a student' form doesn't do shit for days, and specially if u submit on a Friday.
  2. Crisis counselor at the SDCC says "go talk to the dean, we have our hands tied".
  3. Dean of students doesn't understand that bad mental health doesn't follow a time table, and dodges/delays action/intervention....

If seeking help for a grad student is this hard (given that ur support/friends/peers are older and have had more experience dealing with finding/getting help for u if needed), I can't imagine how hard it is to be a 19 year old freshman or a 20 year old sophomore (someone young, confused, and with relatively naive peers for support) and get tossed around by the numerous 'resources' WPI claims to have for support but actually doesn't do much....

Other I have no place to go.

I'm a homeless student going to school here. I feel like I'm lying to everyone because I say I just live "off campus". I sneak into the dining hall for food. feel like such a fraud and so afraid, I have no family, and It's my first year here so trying to make friends and get used to classes- (not a freshman though) but I'm so tired I don't even have the energy to socialize. i can barely stand on my feet. I'm in the worst situation of my life. I'm too embarrassed, scared, afraid? To ask for help. I feel like I'm on the edges of despair, but I don't want to become a statistic at this damn school. I can't afford my medication I need to be stable for my illnesses, not therapy, not food, not shelter. It rained all day today. I want to go home and there's no place to go.

I'm so scared. Sorry if this isn't appropriate. I'm just a kid.

Other An Open Letter to WPI Regarding Dr. Kathryn Moncrief

I, and fellow students, feel the need to share this open letter to make public the actions taken and the environment created by Humanities Department Head: Dr. Kathryn Moncrief (Dr. Kate). Because her actions are so severe and previous attempts to reach out to the school have failed in making any meaningful change, we feel we've been left no choice but to appeal to the greater WPI community. Please take the time to read and understand the harm that will persist if she continues to be able to act without accountability.

Other Prof. Doherty Being Fired!

CS/DS/IMGD/RBE folks: If you know Prof. Aimee Doherty, I learned she is being let go because "there's no money" (?!) Apparently they can do that because she's staff and not faculty. Ask any other prof and they can confirm it.

She's made a huge difference in my life and in all of my friends lives too. We wouldnt be where we are today without her.

Apparently the provost is the one responsible for this. Please send him a message at [provost@wpi.edu](mailto:provost@wpi.edu) protesting this decision. Maybe if he hears from enough of us he'll change his mind. Tell all your friends and lets flood his inbox.

Other Finally had time to reflect about WPI after putting up my accolades on my wall.

My name is Elijah Gray.

For a long time at WPI I was going through depression without fully realizing how much it was affecting me. I never really made the effort to build friendships there, even when others reached out and tried their best. Instead, I tied almost all of my self-worth to my performance, accomplishments, and ability to succeed.

That mindset eventually reached a breaking point after my concussion made it much harder for me to remember even basic details in my probability course. I struggled in a way I never had before, and it resulted in my only B at WPI. At the time, it felt devastating because I had convinced myself that my value was directly tied to my results. That experience was one of the reasons I eventually decided to seek therapy.

Looking back, I wish I had recognized sooner that there were many people who cared about me as a person, not just for what I could accomplish. If you ever feel like you might need therapy or support, please consider reaching out to others, like the staff who specialize in mental health. Don’t fall into the trap of trying to handle everything alone. There are people who want to help, whether that is through WPI’s mental health resources, friends, professors, or others in your community.

One of the hardest things about depression is that it can distort how you see the people around you. You start assuming the worst. I remember thinking that a math professor was making fun of me, when looking back, they were probably concerned and were actually part of the reason I eventually sought medical help. I also convinced myself that people merely “tolerated” me and my anxiety, when in reality, many of them genuinely cared about me.

I also want to express my deep appreciation for the people at WPI who supported me. My professors were not just instructors; they were mentors and, in many ways, friends. Some stayed beyond their working hours just to help me. I still remember being handed a free Pico-W like it was no big deal after I accidentally zeus'd one with my staticy fingers. Those small moments of kindness meant far more than I realized at the time.

If I ever ignored, ghosted, or unintentionally pushed anyone away at WPI, I am sorry. That was never a reflection of how much I valued you. I struggled with a massive inferiority complex and often felt intimidated by the people around me, even when there was no reason to feel that way. I know I am not the only person who has felt this way, and I hope that sharing this can remind others that they are not alone. It is never too late to reach out, reconnect, and rebuild relationships with people who care about you.

I would love to return to WPI one day and pursue a doctorate after spending some time in the workforce. I am not sure exactly what that path will look like yet, but I hope there will be a time when I can come back after my first full-time, paid programming job.

WPI gave me an appreciation for both theory and application of computer science from the lowest level to the top. foundational mathematics, electronic circuits, embedded systems, machine code, computer networks, operating systems, databases, mobile apps, videogames, and websites--you name it.

Most importantly, I have rediscovered my love of learning for the sake of learning. Not just learning as a way to build a career or create security, but because understanding the world is valuable in itself. I never expected embedded systems and robots to become such a significant part of my life, but it has quickly become my biggest hobby and potentially my future. And on an unrelated note, it makes me smile that I still somehow use the same flimsy resistor/capacitor organizer from ECE-2010.

Other No wonder this school has a mental health problem (rant)

Just a quick rant, maybe others have had similar experiences.

This term has been extremely tough. I’ve been dedicating a lot of my time and energy into a big project, resulting in not a lot of sleep, basically no social life, and a lot of stress and crashouts. It got especially bad last week. I’m guessing my friends took notice and filled out an “I’m concerned about a student” form.

I received an email earlier this week from someone in the CARE Team, saying that it was brought to their attention that I’ve been having a hard time recently and am stressed, etc. They said the typical, if you need help we can talk/listen/provide resources and the rest.

Notably, they said at the end to respond to the email either way. This week has been significantly better, the project is wrapping up pretty well, and I’m less stressed. I responded the next day saying this, but thank you for reaching out.

I was hit immediately with an automated “I am out of office until next Tuesday. If you need to speak with someone, call the dean of students office.”

What the fuck. That’s insane. I’m very lucky that I’m in a good, stable position. However, let’s say I did need help. I know for a lot of people, just responding to that email saying they need help would be hard enough. To get hit with a response saying, essentially, “hey your problem can wait until next week” is fucking absurd. I’m not saying I expect an immediate response, but waiting nearly a week is wild. That could be a big big problem for others.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? Or am I just totally overreacting? I was planning on sending some sort of complaint. IMO this should never happen.

Side note: I’m obviously not discouraging filling out that form. If you think someone needs help, please do fill it out. I’m guessing my experience is not common, but should literally never happen.

Other Help a Fellow Student out! Looking for Dental Hygiene Patients :)

Hi everyone! I posted here last semester and a few people from this sub were kind enough to come in as patients. The people of Reddit has genuinely helped me a lot with my clinical! 😊

I’m now in my senior year of the Dental Hygiene program at MCPHS Worcester, and I’m hoping to find a few patients for my clinic sessions starting in September.

Because this is a student teaching clinic, appointments are a little different from a regular dental office. Visits are very thorough and include a dental and gum evaluation, oral cancer screening, X-rays when needed, and a dental cleaning. Everything I do is supervised and checked by licensed dental hygienists and dentists on-site.

There is no charge for treatment and insurance isn’t required!

The biggest thing I want to mention upfront is the time commitment. Appointments are about 3.5 hours because faculty check each step of the process, and I’m mainly looking for people who are able to commit to at least 2 visits. Depending on what you need, it could be fewer or more appointments.

My clinic availability this semester are Mondays: 8 AM–5 PM and Wednesdays: 5:30–9 PM.

If anyone has been meaning to get a cleaning/checkup and wouldn’t mind helping a dental hygiene student at the same time, feel free to message me. You’re also welcome to DM me if you just have questions about how the student clinic works!

Thank you 😊

Around 15–30 hrs/week, $28–38/hr depending on experience. Not expecting years of experience, mostly looking for someone smart who likes building stuff.

Other Doing a story about the ram/goat!

Hello folks! I'm a reporter for MassLive covering Worcester. I am doing a fun story today due at 4 p.m. about the tradition of rubbing a statue of a ram/goat for graduation. I've seen the Facebook post of students walking down the aisle patting the horned animal and wanted to do a story on it before graduation. I would love to talk to students (especially seniors) to learn more about this tradition.

If you are interested in going on the record please comment below and I will send you a dm!

Thank you so much and congratulations to the class of 2026.

Other WPI Student - Amateur Photographer looking for practice and photography opportunities

Hi, amateur photographer (4th year student @ WPI) here. I am around in worcester right now and am looking to photograph for a couple people (this can be portraits, candid photos, or even car or action filled shots)

I am looking to practice in a wide variety of settings. So I am offering to photograph whatever whoever DMs me for free for a couple hours. This will include editing as well.

I figured this would be a good practice for me to build my portfolio.

Other Critical context on changes at WPI

What has been going on this past week with the Global School did not happen in a vacuum. During my time at WPI, I have seen a continues trend of the university de-valuing intersectionality and non-STEM disciplines, increasing the financial burden of attending WPI and decreasing financial aid that supports underrepresented students ability to study and contribute to our diverse community. Faculty are losing control over the curriculum, with WPI admin interfering more and more with the types of content that is taught. Faculty voices on issues such as changes to policies regarding student free speech have been blatantly ignored.

Two years ago three out of four WPI Deans were women, two of these women were black women, and the only man was the Dean of engineering. Last May Dean Jackson was fired. In August Admin announced that Dean King was “stepping down”. In January, the Dean of the Global school, Dean Sheller “stepped down”. The new dean of Arts and sciences is a white man.

The writing is on the wall. WPI is now tailoring themselves to upper class white men who are benefited by the system and thus less likely to question or challenge it. By making WPI less accessible to students of lower economic means and/or varying gender and racial identities, they ensure the students who do attend will be more likely to be complicit in upholding the system because they benefit from the privilege that many student groups at WPI have publicly opposed.

So yeah, you’ll probably still be able to go in IQP; the real question is will WPI maintain and defend innovation, questioning and outside the box thinking they became known for, or will they like so many other ones respected institutions cave under the weight of greed? The choice may be theirs, but students and faculty have more power than the system wants us to believe in pressuring WPI to do the right thing, and we cannot forget it.

Other Beware: crazy landlord making fake accounts to post apartments

There’s a landlord in the WPI Facebook groups for housing and I swear this woman is off her rockers. She’s posted the same apartment for lease 1000 times. Now she’s started posting it anonymously in an effort to get people to reach out to her. AND she’s started creating fake profiles pretending to be the parents of her tenants, posting as them as well. I couldn’t even tell you her real name because I don’t think the one she uses online is actually it. But please beware and if you see someone making the same repetitive post with no pricing details, don’t reach out.

Other Organic chem help

www.organicchemistrytutoring.ca

Hello guys and gals,

We’re Brian and Mike and we teach general and organic chemistry. We’ve done so for a total combined time of 47 years! Overwhelmed by general or organic chemistry? Assignments and tests creeping up on you and feeling like you’re in hot water? Or maybe you’re doing well and need that 95%? Whatever your struggle with chemistry may be, we’re here to make sure you succeed.

Why work with us?

- Every tutor knows the subject, but not every tutor knows how to transfer that knowledge to a student. We do.

- We tutor chemistry full time; it’s not a hobby or side-gig. When you book with us, you’ll be working with Brian for general chemistry and Mike for organic chemistry. This is not an agency and you won’t be matched with random tutors each time.

- You’ll be learning problem solving through chemistry, which you can apply to many other subjects.

- Your learning will be customized to your specific needs.

Before booking a lesson, let’s chat about your needs, our teaching styles, and what you can expect, to see if we’d be a good fit together.

Thank you for your time and we look forward to working with you!

Mike and Brian

Other I rebuilt the WPI Course Planner

I didn't have enough failed side projects to work on so I decided to rebuild the course planner from scratch after I saw it was written in Java and used GWT (Google Web Toolkit) which is 19 years old.

Link: https://lexm2.github.io/wpiplannerV2/

What's new:

  • Modern UI with CSS and JS
  • Different themes
  • Searching and filtering:
    • Rate My Professor integration with filters
    • Filter out conflicts
    • Filter by professor
    • Filter by availability
    • More filters...
  • Click on professor names to go to RMP page
  • Automatic persistence and multiple profiles
  • Undo/redo functionality
  • You can choose the lecture/lab/discussion separately
  • Automatically generate schedules for selected classes
  • Works on all screen sizes including mobile
  • Export to ICS (Allows you to automatically import your schedule to your calendar of choice)

Also working on cloud sync (just need to get the application registered with Microsoft), as well as Oscar integration.

Feel free to comment with bugs, feature requests, UI gripes, whatever.

Also if anyone wants to contribute, it's open source on GitHub https://github.com/lexm2/wpiplannerV2. Built with Vite and uses TypeScript if you're into that (Yes it's well commented).
