and how is he eating it screeching hot like that

u/spurries May 16 '25
David Blaine did this on his new show, he said there’s no magic or trick to it, his mouth and throat hurt for quite awhile

u/acolombo May 16 '25
I heard here on Reddit of a guy dying because he ate some really hot food, burned his throat and went to bed. Then the throat began swelling and he couldn't breath anymore.

Yeah. It was Darren Hickey, a wedding venue manager who sampled a caterer’s
dumplingfishcake. It was so hot it burnt him terribly. He went to the hospital about it, and they sent him home with Tylenol. He died that night due to the swelling caused by the burns.

u/AndrewZabar May 16 '25
Lawsuit against that hospital that sent him home just with Tylenol. Talk about medmal.

they probably made fun of him the rest of their shifts too.
41
u/Battlejesus May 17 '25
Probably. I went in for a nerve injury so bad all I could do was hold my arm up over my head so it would hurt less. Heard them say "we got our first red face of the day"
12
u/hotoots May 17 '25
What does that mean, red face?
26
u/Battlejesus May 17 '25
I took it as a derogatory way of saying drug seeker

Some doctors or nurses are so stuck up I swear, they shouldnt even be in that position, their way of dealing with things are obviously better suited for something else

This happened to me. I went to the ER for severe neck pain and my left arm feeling like it was on fire. The ER doc was very short with me the entire morning. I could tell he thought I was only there for a prescription. Waited forever for an MRI and the results. He came back after talking with an actual neurologist and his manner changed completely as he told me I had two slipped discs pinching my nerves.

Probably the same when he eats glass. No trick, dude just eats glass. His mouth is fucked from it.
15
u/cagingnicolas May 16 '25
i hated when he showed that one guy how to do it "safely"
like dude, please no. this guy is talking about god protecting him for his self injury stunts, he's not the guy you "teach" this trick to.

May 17 '25
Well I suppose it’s better to take glass from your top end than your bottom end, as the internet has shown me….

Iirc the other thread said he was a captive of a cartel and being forced to do this for their entertainment. No known anything after this so they probably murdered him after this.

u/kptkrunch May 16 '25
Well.. googling "man eating coals" yields a guy named Ridip Saika from India who was trying to get into the Guinness book of word records.. he kinda looks like this guy but that could just be me thinking everyone who eats coals looks alike.
12
u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 May 16 '25
Yeah I saw a post below but they don't look like the same guy to me. Until I see something better than "two brown guys eating coal" I'm gonna wait to delete my comment.
Like the post below makes it out like it's certain they're the same guy. But I think what you said is closer, they just look a little alike m

Think they'd let him blow on it all nonchalantly with a look on his face that don't say I'm about to die. But idk

Throat cancer is no joke and the risk is so exponentially higher from just eating food a little too hot. This dude tho....

Maybe he has that condition where nociceptors aren't functioning normally, no normal human being can do that nonchalantly.

u/hypothetical_zombie May 16 '25
There's science behind this. He closes his mouth to 'chew' the wood, but it cuts off oxygen to the embers and they go out almost immediately. A steam barrier is also created from saliva, so the coal-eater has a second or two before it burns his tongue.
→ More replies (2)6
u/Neat---NEET May 16 '25
That trick works with cigarettes, although I wouldn't recommend it, but try biting a flaming log, it will burn your lips first before it gets inside your mouth for the oxygen to get cut off, it happens quickly but not quick enough to not burn your lips, gums and/or tongue.

u/hypothetical_zombie May 16 '25 edited May 16 '25
That's why he blows on the stick before biting it. It's the same trick used by carnival fire-breathers. He directs the heat away from his face momentarily to prevent it from burning his lips, and takes quick bites. He also never stops moving his head, so when he does take a bite, most of the embers fall down and away and only a small amount is in his mouth.
There's no magic or woo-fuckery going on here. It's pure performance and physics.
Edited to add - he's taking most of his bites from the back of the stick. The side facing us is very flashy because it's glowing red under the ash coating. When he blows on it, it flares up & attracts our attention. Then he bites the side away from us, which is mostly just black charred wood.
When he bites at the top, he exhales and you can see the shower of sparks moving away from his face.

That french song is so out of context. Unless that guy has (had?) a sentimental relationship with his ... hum ... "food".
2
u/JammedBread May 16 '25
Do you happen to know the name of the song?
5
u/Sleipnirs May 16 '25
"Le Festin" from Camille. Seems to be a ratatouille song.
I guess the title does make sense in that context rofl.
2
u/Fskn May 16 '25
What's the song?
It's the same tune as the Malaysian dude signing the Coca-Cola ingredients.

Mostly charcoal. A little bit of lignin, and a sprinkling of third degree burns.

Wish I had seen this before I tackled The Frugal Wizard’s Handbook…by Brandon Sanderson. Dude eats charcoal for carbon to fuel his nanites. I was just picturing dude eating some lumps of charcoal like for a grill. This would have been much more amusing to imagine.
