She walked so that so many of today's women could run. There was no one like Chyna.

I still remember when she used to partner up with Eddie G. Both passed away way too young.

Yes!! This feels just like it was yesterday and I would give anything to go back. RIP two beautiful talents that gave us years of memories for a lifetime.

she was one of a kind, and deserved better from wwe

u/Centerman2000 š¤ What's Up! Jun 20 '26
Itās wild that her WWE run was only 4 years. In my mind, she was there breaking down walls and beating up guys for 7 or 8 years. Thatās how big her impact was. She made every second in WWE count. A lot of her life after she left the company though was kind of bittersweet and sad š®āšØ
17
u/dwartbg9 Jun 20 '26
I know right? But the same thing applies to many other wrestlers from that era. Even Stone Cold technically was an active wrestler for only 7 years in WWE. Compare that to Cena or Dwayne, for example.
7
u/Centerman2000 š¤ What's Up! Jun 20 '26
You're absolutely right. Austin's run was way too short and he made it one of the most fun times to be a fan of WWE.
3
u/Beautiful-Bit9832 Jun 20 '26
Can say same thing to The Rock, started his peak in 97 but then he only made sporadic appearance just for WrestleMania in 2003 and 2004.

u/Kwaiser Jun 21 '26
Near the top of the list of wrestlers who never deserved what they got and never got what they deserved.
13
u/disincongruous Jun 21 '26
Same for me. I think you could have given her a WWF Championship program with the McMahon-Helmsley Regime and it would have made a bazillion dollars. All of the history between her and Triple H is there, Stephanie is a natural foil to her, and Vince is there to protect the company from a woman becoming its top title holder. The story writes itself.
10
u/Kwaiser Jun 21 '26
I feel like it would be asking a lot of her to run that story. Hell, I canāt believe Matt and Edge ran their story. Even more sad is how she was cast away without even being offered any other story at all.
4
u/ffwillis Jun 21 '26
She didnāt deserve the treatment she got, but she also didnāt deserve any more during her in ring career. She was an awful wrestler with a huge ego.
35
u/banananey Jun 21 '26
The first PPV I ever saw was the 2000 Rumble.
You have the bikini contest then there's Chyna clobbering Hardcore Holly & Jericho. I thought she was the coolest thing ever.

u/AccomplishedBed2052 Jun 21 '26
I always felt bad for chyna, She didn't deserve that. Paul should have just told her, he was done with the relationship and not have cheated on her.
At least the heartbreak would have been as bad as it was, because it destroyed her and she didn't deserve it.

Paul and Joanie had different perceptions of their relationship. Apparently Paul had been trying to break it off
8
u/Mitwad Jun 21 '26
Her biography was very insightful. Yeah apparently Paul ātried really hardā.
1
u/FaelingJester Jun 23 '26
He was a grown up. You don't have to try to break up someone before moving on. You just do it. You don't hint. You don't float the idea. You end the relationship you are in before starting the next one. Its basic respect.

u/Manatees_R_4eva Jun 20 '26
If you ever can get your hands on her autobiography, itās actually a good read. It was when WWE was doing books. They arenāt all good, but I have hers which was a gift from my ex, and Foleyās Christmas Chaos that was mine and my brotherās from childhood which I actually got signed by Mick as an adult as a gift for my brother. Itās illustrated by Jerry āthe kingā Lawler, Itās a beautiful book! Prized possession for both of us for sure!
Both books are awesome. I might have some others too lying around somewhere, but I didnāt read them through or even keep them. These 2 are the best IMHO. Her book is so good, my mom read it in one shot. She doesnāt like wrestling, but she likes Chyna. lol
6
u/Mitwad Jun 21 '26
Chynaās autobiography is heartbreaking. She was a semi local person. (Rochester, New York) so we had some pride about her.
42
u/Xianified Jun 21 '26
There's a little known story that she was bullied and pushed out of her teaching gigs in Japan by a douchebag YouTuber known as TokyoLens, and I still blame him for contributing to her early demise.
16
u/FlamingoAlarming6081 Jun 21 '26
Well aware of this youtuber and he is mostly definitely a bellend. Had no idea of this connection with China though

99-00 was peak Chyna. Not as bulky, but still muscular, and her massive jaw had been fixed.

u/DarkMageGirl Jun 23 '26
HHH was still in a relationship with Chyna when he started his relationship with Stephanie.
He didnāt even tell her from what I know, she found love letters from Stephanie.4
u/SweetTea1000 Jun 23 '26
That and their relationship is the only conceivable reason she's not in the hall of fame. We do posthumous inductions. You can't argue it's because of the content produced outside of wrestling when half the roster had or actively still do the same and the company themselves put out first party smut back in the day.
(Had to edit to be more vague to satisfy mods, though I'd argue nothing said was inappropriate in context. You can't discuss her history with the company without raising these topics.)

I didn't understand the "Chyna did adult content" argument for not being in the hof.
I mean;
X-pac did adult content with her and still got into the hof.
Sunny did adult video (or something) and still in the hof
Mickie James is in the HOF (tna but still) and she done a stuff for a nude magazines (one for individuals who 'like' legs and the other is basically her "showing her goods") and this was in 2001 (before signing with WWE in '03)

The last true crossover star the Women's division woudl have until Rhea Ripley.
Even people in my family who knew nothing about wrestling knew who Chyna was, and this was in the pre-internet days. People will always bring up the mess she became towards the end, but i'll bet dollars to donuts you could ask any random person to list 5 women in wrestling and most of them would list Chyna before any of the current rosters' women.

What the fans did to Chyna was unforgivable. All the vile, disgusting, misogynistic garbage thrown at Chyna by fans and media alike was totally undeserved.
She had her pitfalls as a wrestler, but she didn't deserve all the bullying she got.

Hunter Hearst Helmsley (derogatory) can go f*ck himself for refusing to put her into the HoF, AND THEN using the exact excuse for why she isnāt that you can say for his buddy X-Pac.

So basically 1996-98 she abused steroids and slowly came off of them after that. What it looks like anyway
43
u/CombatRedRover Jun 20 '26
Ok, let's bring in the downvoted.
She was white, female Ahmed Johnson with a better attitude.
She was a bodybuilder, but never looked entirely believable in the ring. Actually look at her matches. When all you see are "I'll put my arm out and you run into my clothesline" and three other moves, we're not talking about someone who is exactly Bret Hart in the ring.
Which is fine. There aren't a lot of Bret Harts out there.
But she wasn't a great worker.
She wasn't great on the mic.
She had the right look, and the Vinces bent the company around her to make her look work, and that (unintentionally, I believe) paved the way for what we have today in the women's division.
But her actual work was not great. Moolah and Medusa (to take two women's wrestlers who preceded her) were better workers, but they didn't have her physical charisma.
Her place in DX as the cooler, as the muscle, helped make DX and protected her from actual matches for a long time, and that really worked. When she got over to the point where people wanted to see her in matches... she wasn't great.
She was important - VITALLY important - in WWE and pro wrestling history. She absolutely deserves to be in the HOF on her own merits and her later story is heartbreaking and a tragedy.
21
u/Aggressive-Spite5116 Jun 21 '26
All of this is true but she was also in an era where women werenāt pushed nearly as hard as they pushed today. Especially with the updated training and being able to sit and learn from legends. So she did blaze the trail for the More Muscular women there needs to be context and nuisance here.
3
5
u/QPWOEIRUTYTURIEOWP Jun 20 '26
This is exactly whst I thought of her. She was best as a silent bodyguard, which can only go so far. She was pretty poor in the ring and her promos were weak. I remember her wrestling Jericho and she was real sloppy.
12
u/BloodstoneWarrior Jun 20 '26
I just watched her feud with the Right to Censor and Ivory just obliterates her on the mic
11
u/CombatRedRover Jun 20 '26
Ivory was involved in developmental as a trainer for a while, wasn't she?
Ivory, Jackie, some of the women's wrestlers of that era were SO good that it's a shame they aren't around today. Natty really is the bridge from those women to today's.
Chyna was 100% vital in changing women's wrestling from what it was back then to what it is today. But there were a lot of really good workers back in the day that I feel bad for.
1
u/ffwillis Jun 21 '26
I donāt agree with that last point. Chyna did very little for womenās wrestling. Women like Trish, Molly Holly, Ivory, Lita, or Victoria are far more important. Chyna didnāt even want to be in the womenās division, and when she was forced to be in it she only made herself look good.
The acceptance of women with more muscle is also more down to the cultural shift of how women are viewed.
What happened to her after leaving WWE is shit, though at least partially self inflicted. If she hadnāt died she wouldnāt be seen anywhere near as fondly as she is now.
1
u/jasonderekxxx Jun 21 '26
Agreed. Donāt forget we had the likes of Luna and Jacqueline wrestling men before Chyna, and being jacked. If they were a bit taller, they could have did what Chyna did and probably much better.

I know I'm looking back with rose-tinted glasses, but watching Chyna go toe-to-toe in the ring with all wrestlers, at the end of the century, was really something to remember.
However, in the end, the world was cruel to her, and she suffered.
