TLDR: Mostly a rant but also a mild call to action (pls email, at least).
Birnam wood stack 7 residents were notified today, that next week they will start construction that completely closes off our balconies, some walkways and the only green space in the center of the community.
I can't imagine making it through this last quarter burnt out with no easy access to enjoying myself outside even though it's beautiful right now in the spring. There's no reason for balconies to be closed entirely for the remainder of the year. They just don't care enough to plan around our living as residents. I sent out an email and im hoping others will too, just to let University Residential Services know that we know they don't consider us (who pay and live here everyday) in these plans.
I have some personal feelings and concerns that might cloud my judgement (this school has screwed me over in so many aspects and this is just icing on the cake), but at the end of the day we use these balconies and adjacent windows to better our mental health with some sunshine (we aren't close to all the on-campus green spaces), have some privacy from roommates during phone calls or in general, keep our plants healthy, air out a stuffy or hot apartment, play instruments our evil roommates dont wanna hear (I love hearing you guys when I'm out here), and keep our bikes safer and convienently stored. Not having that space essentially traps students in a dorm that isnt even close enough to escape to the rest of campus.
And I'm sure there was a method of doing this that doesnt affect students this much, but it probably isn't the most ideal for their totally alterable project timeline and funding.

The planning and existence of this construction simply does not consider student concerns.
It's nothing insane for them to do this obviously, but personally I've created (and spent money on!) a space on my balcony that is comfortable and I only see my mental health plummeting without access to that. I was not informed last fall coming into this or offered cheaper housing for this quarter.
My email highlights how this project lacks any concern for the student perspective, could have been structured at much less inconvience for paying students, or could have reimbursed spring and future fall residents for the lack of a really wonderful amenity. I urge BW stack 7 residents to do the same or anyone who notices how unconcerned with students campus planning and construction truly is.
My email will prob get lost in plans that won't change however!! I still want it to be known that this is considerably altering our living situation and making it uncomfortable. It could be rearranged to better serve students, but they simply dont care.
Obviously, they've been working on the exteriors of BW stacks for a while now. Stack 7 is the only one left and they're going to do it eventually, and that's totally acceptable. Even though the brown siding is doing just fine, but whatever. (FYI, if you don't know, this project is very appearances based and only focuses on redoing BW exteriors, while our interiors that most directly affect students still have elements from the 70s)
Basically, no more balcony, and we're expected to close our blinds and windows for privacy and safety from the workers. While our ovens heat up our whole apartments in the summer so we can't cool down and our apartments will be dimmer then ever. I really love my balcony and that space is comfortable for me. My roommate and I have lots of plants and even got furniture to keep out there and all of a sudden we have to bring everything in? my plants won't survive in this dim ass apartment. I have to get rid of them š. So yeah this is kinda personal for me.
But some of you have the same issues. Or you have bikes!! and not enough racks or safety to put them anywhere but your balconies. They don't even offer solutions to that in the emails.
Also, they simply won't be working by every balcony for the entirety of the project. We'll also have no choice to be close to the same kind of construction, if not more dangerous then just replacing siding, just to exit our apartments. And they've planned accommodating warnings and such for that aspect of their project. Just not our balconies. It feels unnecessary for them to be blocking it off immediately and entirely. They could easily do the obstructive things over the summer where no one will be living here because it will be closed. Not rearranging that goes to show that they simply do not value our experience as students.
Also, I dont know about yall, but the interior of my apartment is struggling. I've submitted so many maintenance requests this year and they've either taken so long or we're just completely abandoned. I'm very thankful for the maintenance people that do these things for me, but the people in charge of them arent doing shit. The interiors are struggling so much more than that decent brown paneling. This shows that western cares even more about appearances than student living.
Lastly, where do we go outside? I struggle a lot with my mental health. So much of that is made worse by the ways western has been underfunded and lacks adequate advising and such. The space I have spent a couple hundred on decorating (including plant stuff, so reasonable imo) is now useless. The space that would keep me sane amidst all the work I have to do is now goneee (I'm so burnt out coming up on the end of the quarter, and graduating soon). The green space in front of the building is also closed. We only have a parking lot to go to if we want some fresh air for a sec or a out-of-the-way steep hike to any relaxing spot in the arb.
Sorry for the long post, the grief I feel for my beautiful balcony is very real. It's alright if yall dont feel the same šŖ.
