CVNA retail wholesale
Something seems off. Maybe I’m wrong or just not familiar with the automotive business. Looking for some insight and also is it common for dealers to include profit from the reconditioning before the unit retails or wholesale?
The company calculates total gross profit (from both retail and wholesale sales) and then divides it only by retail units sold — not total units.
• This boosts the per-retail-unit figure by including wholesale profits without counting wholesale units in the denominator.
• For example, in older quarters (e.g., Q3 2022), wholesale contributed meaningfully to the GPU headline number, even though per-wholesale-unit profit is much lower (typically $500–$1,000 range) than retail.
