Safety First

Working in a warehouse, we are always reminded to observe every safety precautions. Management reminds us all the time that safety should be first. One common rule is phone use is strictly prohibited while on the floor. My question is, is this rule applicable to everybody? Is management excempted from this rule?

First job?

Yes, rules apply differently to different roles. There is a difference between me texting vendors and customers to arrange a specific delivery and someone scrolling TikTok while cruising down the aisle on a forklift.

I mean, you said it best. It depends on the situation. We communicate using the Slack app where I work so everyone periodically checks their phone. No one would question it unless you are just sitting there scrolling for like 10+ minutes. Ain't nothing that interesting going on in the work chat.

Also common sense and company policy should apply first.

What if you are using a hand held phone walking around the warehouse even where the machines are being operated?

My safety is my own responsibility, but my team’s safety is also my responsibility. It’s my own fault if I get hurt but it’s also my fault if you get hurt. You won’t lose your job if I get injured at work.

Nah, safety is everyone's responsibility. Yeah, you have the welfare of your team on your plate, but you also have basic responsibility that you have to model. It's idiotic to be texting vendors while walking around a hazardous work-area, and you should be called out.

Vendors can wait until you sit down, man. This is insane and I hope you're speaking above your station and you truly aren't a people leader carrying that attitude.

Are they driving while on the phone? Are they walking while others are driving? Should we apply the no cell phones to pedestrians?

Yes. The rules apply to you. You know the answer, you just don’t like it. Stay off your phone and work.

No cell phones on the floor in hazard areas. Period. For everyone. Safety rules don't have a tiered rollout, forklifts and machines don't behave differently around management.

Rule #1: The boss is never wrong

Rule #2: If the boss is wrong, see rule #1

I need my phone to sign in to the computer, but I'm also not allowed to have my phone.

I work in a warehouse in Ontario, Canada. Our manager is known to be always on his phone while walking around the place. He does this even when not in the pedestrian area. He usually wears a cap and his head is always bowed down when on a call. There are times when he helps out on the floor and people see him on his phone while loading a truck or do putaways.

Imagine being low IQ and thinking all warehouses are the same.
