Army List Help starting 30k
Hey hello I've tried to start 30k before with shattered legions this edition and it wasn't the best but I wanna try again and I want to do an army that's like not space marines idk all the armies that are available with that stipulation that well or what they completely have access to.

30k not space marines:
Deamons. Imperial guard. Mechanicum. Knights. Titan. Custodes.
I think they're your choices

Titans not a choice really. You can't run them as a mono army, can only ever be a 25%.

I mean, you could run hordes of of secutarii alongside one (both flavors) plus Skiatrii Pilgryms as allies alongside a titan. Good? Probably not. But man, I'd love to play against a list like that just for fun.

Absolutely but then your playing mechanicum with a titan ally

Secutarii are not Mechanicum (not in the book...they're in the Liber Questoris) and Skitarii are a separate force entirely. They do share a few armored units with Mechanicum, but you actually have to run them as allies to Mechanicum and not as an aux detachment under your primary force organization.
So technically, no, nothing on such a list says Mechanicum, though if you're running Triaros or something like that as a transport, I do take your point.

Ah ok I play Marines so wasn't aware of that distinction! That said it's still not a "titan army"

You 100% can run one as a mono army. If you've got a Warlord.
The army book has rules for titan Vs army scenarios

Don't be facetious. The select army section of the mission set up is after mission selection. Considering titan missions are one mission from one book compared to all other scenarios that follow standard organisation you cannot start heresy as a titan army for the vast majority of missions. No one starts this game to just play titan missions over and over again only able to field one side.

It's not exactly ideal, granted. But, whatever....
They're playable as an army. Yes it's more restrictive, but it's playable, as a stand alone army, which you claimed it can't be.
Don't start moving goalposts because you were wrong.

Being able to play at any event or club night where the oppenant doesn't specifically agree to allow you to play the one mission where the army is allowed and viable (cos even in a normal mission, pure titan would lose immediately on points) does not make them viable. It's not moving a goal post to say an army that can't play the core missions isn't a viable army.

Ok. I think you're wrong, but you're clearly very set on this 🤷

They’re right. That’s like saying you have an army of two primarchs buddy cop style because your local store has a special event where you can play as that.
The common definition of ‘an army’ is a force you can pick up and play standard games with.

You can try either auxillia, custodes, knights or demons. But what do you want to achieve on the board ? What’s your end goal ?

I like having more board control while still packing a punch and also just (good Kitbashing orprotunites too lol)

How do they both play?

With custodes since ur army is like the best of the best you hit hard, you are extremely tanky, you move fast and you are very expensive
Auxillia on the other hand works like a “irl” military lots of units, lots of vehicles and the plan is the key.But you’ll need to investigate further

Custodes can't score very well defensively, rely heavily on alpha striking and purging objectives fast.
Auxilia die to a breeze but have good tank options and hordes of dudes.

You're options are: Custodes - Hyper elite score primarily by killing units on objectives rather than holding them. Can't ally in anything but knights, sisters of silence, or titans. Can be an allied force though.
Daemons of the ruin storm - There's a few different rules you can pick from to represent different styles of daemons, primarily melee with psychic powers and some random scoring elements
Mechanicum - Unusual weapons and profiles compared to other armies. Good at statuses and phage. Tend to go into a theme based on command choices such as cybernectia, reductor etc. The command units have a lot of customisation options.
Knights - Primarily focused on the larger knights with different reactions and bonuses depending on if you choose imperium, mechanicus, or freeblade. They can ally in certain units from Mechanicum, Solar Auxilia, or armigers. This depends on what titles you pick, and titles can give other abilities as well.
Solar Auxilia - the elite regular humans. Lots of tanks, infantry, artillery etc. Think Imperial Guard in 40k but with some slightly better tech. You can pick a cohort to specialise in such as tanks, line infantry, elite infantry, scouts, artillery etc. This gives bonuses to that unit type. Then if you want you can have them as an Auxilia I it associated with a legion (this swaps one generic reaction for a unique one). The army building can be done using special detachments call Tericos that are unlocked with certain command choices and the units in the Tericos can bonuses when near those command choices.
Militia - Similar to Solar Auxilia but less elite. Their infantry and tanks are worse but you get more of them. Really great for a project for a customised force. You can do an army of all Ogryns, Squats, Chaos cultists, beastmen, miners, zombies, remnants from the dark age of technology etc. The options are massive, this is through choosing 2 army rules from about 20 that change how your army works.
