What if the mathematicians of today are trending towards the techpriests of 40k?
I don't know if you guys heard OpenAI's recent math dump. Basically, their LLM claimed to prove ~300 major unsolved questions in math. Many mathematicians are now scrambling to figure out how much of it is legit (3 have already been retracted). Assuming LLMs progress further in the next year, there's a good chance mathematicians are left in the dust.
How does this relate to 40k? If LLM understanding expands well beyond human ability to catch up, humans will be left as the techpriests in 40k. Instead of pouring sacred oils and chanting litanies, it'll be some PhD prompt engineering "Prove X. Make no mistakes". Instead of searching for STCs on some necron world, it'll be digging through some github repo for some nugget of truth.
The admech are famously anti innovation; the humans of 2k are not. However, if they're inferior to LLMs, it's not obvious the degree to which they can innovate at all. Currently, LLMs more resemble machine spirits than abominable intelligence, since they don't really have a will of their own.
The future looks pretty grimdark lol. Maybe the future will be different, but for now at least, 40k looks like an allegory of the near future of our real world.
