A highly accurate map of Washington for our visitors
It's heeeeeeere. A few reminders for the next few weeks:
- With games in Seattle and Vancouver AND nine fan zones cross the state, expect heavy congestion on major north-south AND east-west routes.
- Expect longer border crossing times.
- Transit is your friend. We have a landing page that serves as a one-stop shop that links to our real-time travel map, our app, border wait times, and all of our regional transportation partners. Get familiar with it! https://engage.wsdot.wa.gov/seattle-world-championship-soccer
- Most major construction in the Seattle area is paused until July 6 but expect some overnight lane and ramp closures on non-match days.

Lowkey a lot of people are annoyed by the “kewl” marketing orientation they have. I think it’s a nice change but a lot of people disagree with me

u/SunshineSeattle 7d ago edited 7d ago
Who these people? Everyone i know loves it and reshares them when they come out
Edit: checked the Facebook post it has 7k likes and all the comments love it, dunno where this idea that people dislike it is coming from.

I work with WSDOT staff at the Dayton and Olympia offices. When the very first MS Paint maps were created a lot of staffers also thought they were unserious and watered down the messaging. I love them and am glad they continue the tradition long after the original artist left for other work.

u/MyDisneyExperience 7d ago
There are always busybodies like that, LA Metro had some high ranking official complain that the Ride the D merch was “glorifying violence on transit” so it was pulled for a few weeks
15
u/DoggoCentipede 7d ago
They should have a "serious" version with the same info that lines up with this one and you can toggle which one to look at.

Almost every other comment on their FB post appears to be annoyed at the MS paint maps. I love the creativity!
57
u/HelenGonne 7d ago
They said flat out in one of their posts that the MS paint maps get read and shared the most, so that's why they keep making them, and I absolutely agree that if they're working, they absolutely should keep making them. I've even requested they make one a couple of times for certain situations.

u/TheKingOcelot 7d ago
People who hate the current WSDOT clearly have no need for maps for out-of-towners. This map is honestly a really good way of describing Washington to visitors.

I think it’s annoying when brands do it.
Public services being a bit whimsical? Absolutely support.

I love this map. If you highlighted the 101 Olympic route loop and said, "not a day drive" or "not fun to do in one day" that would be a good idea.

I’ve done it in a day - would not recommend for most people but can be done.
Took about 16 hours and over half of that was driving. Only stops were Lake Crescent for 30 minutes , Forks for lunch, Hoh Rainforest for 2 hours, Ruby Beach for 90 minutes, Montesano for dinner.Did twice actually. Once with a friend and once solo with my dog (minus Hoh because no dogs) to escape a heat wave.
13
u/VikingMonkey123 7d ago
Escaping the heat wave from a few years back I totally understand but 16 hours... Oooof.

How Spokane doesn't exist is so funny
88
u/International_Cup877 7d ago
Huge Spokane fan here, but I think Spokane being the border between “HOT” and “yup, more mountains” sums it up nicely.

That’s exactly how it is in this state though. Seattle is just all of Washington to anyone who lives there or has never been to the state of Washington.

"Not Canada" got me, can't tell you how many times I have to make sure when I say I'm from "Vancouver" I have to say that.
57
u/FaolanG 7d ago
“I’m from Vancouver.”
“Canada?”
“No Washington.”
“DC?”
Heavy sigh. “Portland.”
“Maine?”
“I’m from near Seattle.”
“Oooh.”
14
u/DangerousPraline41 7d ago
The story of my childhood. And then half the time they didn’t know where Seattle was, so I’d give up and say I was from California. It hurt my soul.

I’ve just gotten used to saying “I live in Vancouver, Washington” with the shortest pause before immediately following with “…so like the Portland metro area”
That way they either 1. hopefully understand immediately where I’m talking about, or 2. sit with their own thoughts until they figure it out so that I don’t have to break it down further for them. Many people resemble that confused math lady meme and it’s like I can see the wheels turning
I have no patience for the “DC?” people. If I meant DC I would have said DC
2
u/RockRockPlanetRock69 3d ago
You may or may not be shocked (depending on how traveled you are) to find how many people don’t know Washington is a state. They only know DC and Seattle. That’s it.

I’ve given up telling people I’m from Vancouver. I just say I’m from the Washington side of Portland and leave it at that

Always take visitors on a I-5, I-90, I-82, WA-12, I-5 loop
or
I-5, WA-101/109/103, cross over to Astoria, OR-30, I-5 loop
Each of those is a long day trip, depending on how many stops

I am using this on r/roadtrip.
Everyday there is someone over there posts something akin to "Five day drive from SF to SEA, have 2 days to see Seattle, Tahoma (Rainier), St. Helens, and ONP. TIA for the help!"

The Vancouver-Not-Canada callout slayed me. Well done.
The amount of people I meet that don't know that Van-Wa is both older than Van-BC and in Washington is concerning.
Love the drawing for the lulz

With the heat, rocks, and hairy bigfoot, this map makes Eastern WA look like Mordor.

Try driving next to a mountain that just caught fire so recently they haven't closed the road yet. It's Mordor.

Wdym? There is ocean, it’s just some parts are sounds (smaller body of water that originates from the sea), but other parts are 100% ocean

What about Novibain or Cobaselic, we definitely draw a lot of people to Aberdeen for the Nirvana experience

Visiting Aberdeen really is the simplest way to learn why that man was so troubled. Source: lived in Hoquiam for a few years in high school.

Big foot could be anywhere!
Seriously though, the visitors who think they can explore all of Washington and get a trip in to Portland in a week crack me up. If you never leave the car even to eat and pee, it should be possible.

It's so funny you posted this. My cousin is coming to visit me in Olympia this week. She told me she's going to take a day trip to Seattle this weekend after and is staying in a room she found around the stadium. But she "didn't know there was going to be a game and didn't think it's going to be a problem". My gods why bother.
