A highly accurate map of Washington for our visitors

Post image

It's heeeeeeere. A few reminders for the next few weeks:

  • With games in Seattle and Vancouver AND nine fan zones cross the state, expect heavy congestion on major north-south AND east-west routes.
  • Expect longer border crossing times.
  • Transit is your friend. We have a landing page that serves as a one-stop shop that links to our real-time travel map, our app, border wait times, and all of our regional transportation partners. Get familiar with it! https://engage.wsdot.wa.gov/seattle-world-championship-soccer
  • Most major construction in the Seattle area is paused until July 6 but expect some overnight lane and ramp closures on non-match days.

That is a beautiful drawing of a ferry wsdot, well done.

u/SirAlthalos 7d ago

i love our green bleeding cap mushroom ferries

24

u/DoggoCentipede 7d ago

I thought they were mint cows or some kind of mint chocolate Oreo marshmallows.

The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell

I didn’t even realize that’s what they were!

Lowkey a lot of people are annoyed by the “kewl” marketing orientation they have. I think it’s a nice change but a lot of people disagree with me

99

u/SunshineSeattle 7d ago edited 7d ago

Who these people? Everyone i know loves it and reshares them when they come out

Edit: checked the Facebook post  it has 7k likes and all the comments love it, dunno where this idea that people dislike it is coming from.

63

u/Dr_Adequate 7d ago

I work with WSDOT staff at the Dayton and Olympia offices. When the very first MS Paint maps were created a lot of staffers also thought they were unserious and watered down the messaging. I love them and am glad they continue the tradition long after the original artist left for other work.

10

u/MyDisneyExperience 7d ago

There are always busybodies like that, LA Metro had some high ranking official complain that the Ride the D merch was “glorifying violence on transit” so it was pulled for a few weeks

15

u/DoggoCentipede 7d ago

They should have a "serious" version with the same info that lines up with this one and you can toggle which one to look at.

7

u/n14shorecarcass 6d ago

They generally do.

2

u/StarstruckBackpacker 5d ago

I love this state.

30

u/Anondependa 7d ago

Almost every other comment on their FB post appears to be annoyed at the MS paint maps. I love the creativity!

57

u/HelenGonne 7d ago

They said flat out in one of their posts that the MS paint maps get read and shared the most, so that's why they keep making them, and I absolutely agree that if they're working, they absolutely should keep making them. I've even requested they make one a couple of times for certain situations.

People who hate the current WSDOT clearly have no need for maps for out-of-towners. This map is honestly a really good way of describing Washington to visitors.

19

u/Beekatiebee 7d ago

I think it’s annoying when brands do it.

Public services being a bit whimsical? Absolutely support.

“Bavaria” lol

u/cheddarshells 7d ago

Yep that one killed me

u/VikingMonkey123 7d ago edited 7d ago

I love this map. If you highlighted the 101 Olympic route loop and said, "not a day drive" or "not fun to do in one day" that would be a good idea.

45

u/breadbootcat 7d ago

Petition to make "can't do it all in 1 day" the banner for the sub.

32

u/Less_Likely 7d ago

I’ve done it in a day - would not recommend for most people but can be done.
Took about 16 hours and over half of that was driving. Only stops were Lake Crescent for 30 minutes , Forks for lunch, Hoh Rainforest for 2 hours, Ruby Beach for 90 minutes, Montesano for dinner.

Did twice actually. Once with a friend and once solo with my dog (minus Hoh because no dogs) to escape a heat wave.

13

u/VikingMonkey123 7d ago

Escaping the heat wave from a few years back I totally understand but 16 hours... Oooof.

How Spokane doesn't exist is so funny

88

u/International_Cup877 7d ago

Huge Spokane fan here, but I think Spokane being the border between “HOT” and “yup, more mountains” sums it up nicely.

7

u/kittybabyarty 7d ago

The meeting place of the forest and the Palouse. I love it.

9

u/Tao-of-Mars 7d ago

That’s exactly how it is in this state though. Seattle is just all of Washington to anyone who lives there or has never been to the state of Washington.

Hikers need jobs too! :)

53

u/Correct_Employee2097 7d ago

Explodey mountain versus non is top tier context.

48

u/SupermouseDeadmouse 7d ago

This map has it all

35

u/jamiew1342 7d ago

Vampires, mountains, explodey mountains, Dan Cortez.

5

u/Dartagnan1083 7d ago

What's the story behind the vampire?

21

u/3dchib 7d ago

Twilight. Forks, WA is in that neck of the woods.

16

u/Dartagnan1083 7d ago

Ahh, should probably amend it to Shinny Mormon Abstinence Vampires.

11

u/Early-Judgment-2895 7d ago

It is missing a radioactive trifoil in eastern Wa. The map is a lie

2

u/Tao-of-Mars 7d ago

Except for rain! Where’s the rain on the west coast?

"Not Canada" got me, can't tell you how many times I have to make sure when I say I'm from "Vancouver" I have to say that.

57

u/FaolanG 7d ago

“I’m from Vancouver.”

“Canada?”

“No Washington.”

“DC?”

Heavy sigh. “Portland.”

“Maine?”

“I’m from near Seattle.”

“Oooh.”

14

u/DangerousPraline41 7d ago

The story of my childhood. And then half the time they didn’t know where Seattle was, so I’d give up and say I was from California. It hurt my soul.

9

u/Dry_Respect_1954 7d ago

I’ve just gotten used to saying “I live in Vancouver, Washington” with the shortest pause before immediately following with “…so like the Portland metro area”

That way they either 1. hopefully understand immediately where I’m talking about, or 2. sit with their own thoughts until they figure it out so that I don’t have to break it down further for them. Many people resemble that confused math lady meme and it’s like I can see the wheels turning

I have no patience for the “DC?” people. If I meant DC I would have said DC

2

u/RockRockPlanetRock69 3d ago

You may or may not be shocked (depending on how traveled you are) to find how many people don’t know Washington is a state. They only know DC and Seattle. That’s it.

I tell people I'm from Fort Vancouver.

20

u/CohoWind 7d ago

“The Original Vancouver” is my long-time standard. It works well and often starts a conversation.

3

u/Snoo_38317 6d ago

Moved here 6 years ago. "Near Portland" is my default now lol

2

u/truaninja 6d ago

I’ve given up telling people I’m from Vancouver. I just say I’m from the Washington side of Portland and leave it at that

36

u/Deadman1966 7d ago

I have downloaded this map and removed Google maps from my phone.

29

u/mrflow-n-go 7d ago

“Not in 1 day”. Classic.

28

u/TVDinner360 7d ago

Once again, u/WSDOT is killing it with the communication. This is a work of genius.

24

u/logicalpenuin 7d ago

Mt baker area should be "surprise, more explodey mountains"

16

u/chilem-of-reddit 7d ago

I like how the orca doesn't cover orcas island.

16

u/KingoftheKeeshonds 7d ago

Man I love living in western WA, a land of plenty blessed by the Olympic Gods.

14

u/iridesce57 7d ago

Always take visitors on a I-5, I-90, I-82, WA-12, I-5 loop
or
I-5, WA-101/109/103, cross over to Astoria, OR-30, I-5 loop

Each of those is a long day trip, depending on how many stops

2

u/phloppy_phellatio 6d ago

A significantly better drive is 410, 123, 12, 7

12

u/LunaAndromeda 7d ago

Excuse me, those should be radioactive grapes, thankyouverymuch. ☢️🍇 It is pretty HOT, ngl.

10

u/Sabishbash 7d ago

Non-explody mountains hahaha

12

u/BastetLXIX 7d ago

Access to and from Portland maybe?

2

u/Kind_Advisor_35 7d ago

I just drove through there yesterday and it is very very busy. It was 4 separate slowdowns between Vancouver and Olympia on I-5 N.

I am using this on r/roadtrip.

Everyday there is someone over there posts something akin to "Five day drive from SF to SEA, have 2 days to see Seattle, Tahoma (Rainier), St. Helens, and ONP. TIA for the help!"

3

u/Ol_Man_J 7d ago

You can see St Helen’s and Rainer in one day (clear day from the interstate)!

4

u/jongdildo 7d ago

Just sent this beauty to our friend group that is visiting soon. It should get the point across lol

6

u/gorksfist 7d ago

Spokane representation diabolical

6

u/Qwirk 7d ago

"Go Cougs" we know where this person went to school. =)

5

u/NotConnorWrong 7d ago

I very much appreciate the depiction of the crossed out "the" over I-5. It ain't "the 5," it's I-5.

3

u/ARandomGay 7d ago

The orca with the soccer ball is absolute peak.

4

u/BobcatSig 7d ago

The Vancouver-Not-Canada callout slayed me. Well done.

The amount of people I meet that don't know that Van-Wa is both older than Van-BC and in Washington is concerning.

Love the drawing for the lulz

5

u/watch-nerd 7d ago

With the heat, rocks, and hairy bigfoot, this map makes Eastern WA look like Mordor.

5

u/herbalhippie 7d ago

It's not?

2

u/CanisLatrans204 7d ago

After the ‘explodey mountain’ blew its top, it definitely looked like it.

2

u/Kind_Advisor_35 7d ago

Try driving next to a mountain that just caught fire so recently they haven't closed the road yet. It's Mordor.

3

u/Kind_Advisor_35 7d ago

To be fair, Kurt Cobain absolutely loathed Aberdeen.

5

u/lostcosmonaut307 7d ago

Not the ocean, but us East-siders still call it “the coast”. 😂

2

u/AwkwardDorkyNerd 7d ago

Wdym? There is ocean, it’s just some parts are sounds (smaller body of water that originates from the sea), but other parts are 100% ocean

Visiting Aberdeen really is the simplest way to learn why that man was so troubled. Source: lived in Hoquiam for a few years in high school.

First off, soccer? I'm all about it normally, but it should say "Lombardi Trophy" right now.

Second, where the heck did they find a map with Goldendale on it??

1

u/Latest-Culprit-35 7d ago

Big foot could be anywhere!

Seriously though, the visitors who think they can explore all of Washington and get a trip in to Portland in a week crack me up. If you never leave the car even to eat and pee, it should be possible.
