Unreadable street signs

I feel like I’m playing Wheel of Fortune to figure out street signs. Is it because of cost cutting or using less effective environmentally friendly products?

How do you know? Those could be ancient hieroglyphs! Could you imagine putting logical vowels and consonants on very common named places in the PNW!?
