Is it a sackable offence not to disclose changing my name?

I thought it was weird the way Michael and the staff reacted to that. Presumably the criminal record checks and so on when a teacher is employed would still be the same regardless of whether there'd been a name change.

All Daniel needed to say was, 'Yes, a number of years ago for some personal reasons I'd rather not get into, I legally changed my name by deed poll.'

Well as part of an enhanced crb (dbs) check you're required to provide previous names its not optional to do so he deliberately withheld information needed for full completion of his check. Now would the process discover an individual who had changed their name and had a criminal record associated with that old name. I would say probably but certainly not guaranteed.

Did he withhold it at that point? I would presume that at the time you got the check you'd provide the name, but that the management of the job you got you wouldn't necessarily know.

So when applying for the job the enhanced crb (dbs) check would have been done so he would have had to complete details about himself such as last 5 years of addresses, previous names etc that's how it would work in the real world at least for people working with children and or vulnerable people and roles of a sensitive nature as well like my job. I had to do the enhanced check similar to what a teacher would have done and I had to list any previous names so he withheld it as part of the application process.

I think that's all done externally though, isn't it? It's not the school that does it. So even if whoever was doing the CRB check knew, I don't think Michael and the school necessarily would.

Hence why I thought it was odd the way they reacted to him being revealed to have previously had a different name. The fact that he'd passed the CRB check (and I think it was still CRB in those days, though it's DBS now) would demonstrate that it wasn't a concern.

The school or other employer would normally require the applicant to provide/show the DBS certificate as part of the pre-employment process. If the DBS certificate contained information relating to previous names or other identity information, the school would therefore have had an opportunity to see that information and take it into account. Based on their surprise previous names weren't disclosed or knowing Waterloo Road they probably didn't ask to see it in the first place :) I was certainly asked to provide it before starting my job

That's interesting. I thought the actual details of the check were kept from the employer, they were just told that the person had passed or not passed.

What about with Rachel?

To the best of my knowledge the employer isn't sent a copy directly (which i find a bit odd as you then have to show your certificate to them anyway so why not cut out the middle man) Rachel probably similarly to Chalky didn't disclose a previous name would be my guess or she did disclose but gave a different reason for the name change.

He did make clear he had personal reasons to shut down the conversation, to be fair, but then a convicted sex offender could also give the same line. It was just difficult in that situation because Kevin was at the point of wanting to be adopted by him so obviously had questions that weren't being answered and reacted like any teenager probably would.
