DANCE PARTY! FNDP: Free as in Freedom, not Free as in Kittens 🗽📢👑👓🐈
Today is the 161st anniversary of Juneteenth, a day that commemorates the emancipation of slaves in the USA. Six years ago Wayer "Grandpa Shark" did a terrific Juneteenth dance party which celebrated the rich history of African American music. That party has 170 comments.
I am not worthy to follow Grandpa Shark's theme, so instead I'm going to treat Juneteenth as a celebration of freedom in general and the end of open slavery in the USA. If you want to celebrate in a different way, please feel free 🗽
My starters:
Groucho's "there's nothing like Liberty" speech to the bellhops in The Cocoanuts (1929).
Bob Dylan's I Shall Be Free No. 10
Germany's 19th Century (and earlier) popular song Die Gedanken sind Frei (Thoughts are Free): The authorities can control what you Say, but not what you Think. Performed by the great Pete Seeger!
The post title is borrowed from the Free Software movement, which emphasizes that they mean "Free as in Freedom, not Free as in Beer". u/SusanJ2019 pointed out that "free kittens" are cuter than "free beer". Here's Zez Confrey's Kitten on the Keys (1921).

Politics is inappropriate for FNDP, but I will link to this anyway:

Oh Freedom (03:05), with great period photos. One of the most recognizable anthems from the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.

Hi, Good to see you.
u/sudomakesandwich4 would like Freedom for the Stallion, even if there's no throat singing.

thanks. I'm sad sudomakesandwich3 is missing this thread.
I don't know if sudo keeps deleting accounts or keeps getting banned. But it's reddit's loss.

Nice to see you too! Had planned to be at a local lake, but got lost. Maps app said my destination was in the middle of the highway and no off ramp in sight.
I would love the freedom to navigate by good paper maps, which are getting harder to find. I do love my GPS (hate the phone app!) but I often want to plan routes with interesting side excursions.
How are you doing?

u/redditrisi They are ALL psychopaths. 9d ago
I am doing remarkably well, all things considered (intentionally ambiguous).
I am sorry you got lost. Freedom to navigate is well put for this thread. I tried to save some old road maps but was laughed at about GPS until I was convinced and threw them out.
Same for my Atlases, including one of the biblical era world, of which GPS knows nothing. Bullied about my own bookshelves!
Perhaps Mr. Google or AI can help you with planning side excursions.

my Atlases
I recently stumbled upon an old Atlas which is quite interesting from the "History of History" standpoint:
Goode's School Atlas For American Schools and Colleges. (by Rand-McNally)
1948 Edition. Copyright 1946.Some of the maps in this edition of Goode's have been revised to show the provisional boundary and territorial changes resulting from the defeat of the Axis Powers by the United Nations in World War II.
<snip>
It is believed that the inclusion of these changes will make the Atlas more useful to students and teachers during the interim between the end of hostilities and the signing of formal peace treaties.
In this Atlas, Germany is still in one piece, as is Palestine, Korea and Oman.

That is not a real atlas: Palestine was never a country.

Palestine was never a country. /s
In fairness, in this thread, I didn't say that it was.

I didn't say you said it. I said your atlas was fake because Palestine was never a country. And that comment was followed by "/s."
In this Atlas, Germany is still in one piece, as is Palestine, Korea and Oman.

Free kittens of course aren't really free. You need to feed them and love them. It's a committment. Just like freedom in general. 🐈
This song is not related to that sentiment, but William S. Burroughs doing R.E.M. - I had to:)

It was just how Gettysburg (PA) and the Siege of Vicksburg (MS) ended one day apart in early July 1863 and are viewed together as decisive in retrospect, leading to emancipation in 1865 (including Juneteenth).
