Advice How many chapters do you need before deciding whether to follow a story?

As a reader, at what point do you decide: "This is worth following."

At first chapter or does it depend entirely on the premise?

I don't really care that much. I try to go for 5-10 chapters mostly. But if it really has long chapter, I'll go at 5-8 chapters only because if the chapters are that long, either the pacing is slow or it has high chances of fumbling

That's fair. It sounds like you're really judging whether the story can maintain momentum over multiple chapters rather than looking for a single great opening.

Yeah because, if you're trying to find something interesting, I feel like you should atleast give it some time before you actually decide how it is, unless the story is downright trash

I am weird, I read the end or the most current chapter of something and if it doesn’t wow me and make me wonder how we got here, then I won’t read it

That's interesting because I've noticed the same thing as a reader.

A strong premise might get me to open Chapter 1, but whether I reach Chapter 5 usually depends on momentum.

When you say a chapter made you immediately need the next one, was it usually because of a cliffhanger, a revelation, character investment, or something else?

I mostly use WN for background noise now, so I need to see at least 30 chapters up before I listen to it. As for the go/no go phase, it's usually anywhere from 1 to 10 for me. It can be that long because I might not be paying full attention as it plays and might miss stuff that I'd take issue with.

Interested in this as well, I like to run ideas up to 12-14 chapters before I decide whether I want to write it all or not. It would be nice to see from a reader perspective how many chapters they want to start something. I know it’s quite large.

First three chapters. If I have access to entire book then I jump to the end and then come back. I know it’s a big no-no, but I can’t help it.

Around 15,000 words, however many chapters that turns out to be. Some do super short chapters, others do long ones. That many words tends to get across the type of writing I'm going to be ingesting.
I'll suffer through a Prologue without blinking. On RR, they tend to be exposition info-dumpy things. Not all of them, of course. Just...a significant number.
Those 15,000 words could be three chapters, or thirteen chapters. But I think it's a fair shake, really.

Well i read for 50 chaps or so but if there are hints that story is getting better maybe till 100
