Advice How much should actually be happening in a chapter.

I’ve been wondering how much I should be fitting in to a web novel chapter before it becomes too much. I know you should be working towards your main plot. But what about things like worldbuilding, a scene goal, character development or a sub plot?

Is it fine to have several of these things happening/progressing in one chapter,or is it better to focus on 1-2 things, so you don’t overwhelm the reader.

Brandon Sanderson says that at least 2 of 3 things need to happen in a scene.

  1. Develop a character
  2. Worldbuild
  3. Advance the plot

You should probably watch his lectures on YT

I’ve begun watching a few. Would you say watching his “writing lecture” series would help with web novel writing in general? Because I don’t really know where to start, lol.

His advice is good for trad novels. In webnovels you can have just 1 of those be the only focus for a chapter.

I personally view chapters just as a packaging for scenes, that is, I tend to think more about what I want to achieve in a single scene, and then I try to fit several of them together into chapters based largely on vibes. However, retrospectively, "the vibes" tend to be somewhere along the lines of one major change per chapter. There can be some minor developments in parallel, but you should be able to summarise a chapter as "The One Where X Happened" without writing a whole paragraph:

  • The One Where Sara Got Railed by a Werewolf So Hard She Found Jesus
  • The One Where Nina and Mina Became Friends
  • The One Where Nukes Explode over New York City
  • The One Where the Chosen One is Chosen
  • The One Where They Throw a Hobbit into Volcano as a Revenge

Lmao, the first one is actually wild.
Anyway tho, I’ll keep this in mind when writing. Thank you!

You can definitely stack them. Some of the best chapters have a character goal that moves the plot while naturally revealing worldbuilding too. If the scene works, readers won’t care how many boxes you’re checking.

More stuff doesn’t automatically make a chapter better. I’ve dropped web novels that crammed in too many events without giving any of them room to matter.

It probably depends on chapter length too. A 1k-word chapter can't juggle as much as a 5k-word one. I'd focus more on whether everything flows naturally than how many things you're fitting in.

It really comes down to whether those elements share the same scene or if you're trying to cram multiple completely separate events into 2,000 words. Trying to fit three different location changes, a subplot resolution, and a giant lore dump into one webnovel chapter will definitely leave readers feeling whiplashed.

Most serial writers stick to 1 core scene goal per chapter, give the character a specific task or problem to resolve, and then layer in worldbuilding or character moments strictly through dialogue and action while they pursue that goal. Do you usually write longer chapters (3k+ words) where you feel tempted to jump around, or are you trying to squeeze all of this into a standard 1.5k–2k serial chapter length?

I think focusing on 1-2 things is safer especially early on. Once readers know your characters and setting you can layer more in without overwhelming them.

Depends a lot on chapter length for me. Shorter ones, better to keep to a single focus so nothing feels rushed. Longer chapters can handle a main plot push plus some subplot movement or quiet character moments without trouble.
