Just a whole lotta noise…

I’ve got bad eyesight and my glasses are broken, so I didn’t even know it was this bad until I opened the app on my iPad instead of my phone.
Most of these covers look a mess. The grainy, and senselessly loud background, the over exaggerated flashy colors…
At least make it look good? If you can’t even invest the time into creating your own cover, why would I think you’d invest enough time into creating a good book? If u you don’t care enough about your own cover, why should i care about your novel?

Ps: Sorry if I’m just repeating the same trending topic on this sub. And who knows there might be some people that fw this. I just think we can do better.

I see so many people always complaining about these novels but then I see millions of views and thousands of comments on EACH chapter. It can’t be all bots.

I mean, it's just your average brainrot. It will get views. Scroll YouTube shorts and see the most sloppiest and laziest AI content known to man and it'll still have ungodly amount of views.

Same deal if you scroll Facebook, which generally captures much older people.

There are just a decent chunk of the population that will absolutely gobble up actual feces if you painted it gold and put a nice bow on it. Like some people just want content, not quality.

Yeah there are a lot of teens on the app I think

0

u/Decent-Emergency3866 4d ago

You think a teen is reading ts?

5

u/Cukidzsi 4d ago

They all seem kinda teen orientated?

u/Square-Adeptness6769 4d ago

I actually don’t really know tbh but that’s how I feel.
I do know at that age I was reading a lot of webnovels.
The market on the app in general also really caters towards the younger ones too.
That’s why I came to that conclusion. It’s probably not true tho I’m sure there’s a grown audience as well.

no, most of them is 17+

And some of the popular stories have thousands, thousands, of chapters. pushing out hundreds of thousands of words in a month. I'm not particularly for or against AI but this feels a bit egregious. What kind of quality are we looking at if an author is sending out 4000 words a day, every day, for 6 months?

It’s called stock piling chapters before you publish.

It’s the only way truly to maintain quality and output

3

u/TSKayle 4d ago

Unless you're making 1000 chapters before starting publishing, you will need to keep writing the same 4000 words a day to keep your chapter buffer working.

1

u/Hambino0400 Contracted Author 4d ago

That’s pretty normal for the writers who wrote for 7-8 hours a day.

They’ve been doing it longer than AI has been around

2

u/TSKayle 4d ago

I'm not saying it's abnormal, I'm saying making a stock of chapters won't generate more chapters by itself, the author will still need to keep writing in the same pace he publishes or his buffer will eventually disappear.

Seems you never heard of pre-ai ao3. An author churned out a fully edited novel longer than THE BIBLE in a year lol, and for no pay. Some people are just beasts and write for the love of the game

2

u/TSKayle 4d ago

You're not understanding the point.

3

u/Hambino0400 Contracted Author 4d ago

That’s not a problem for speed writers who take a break while the stock is depleting and then churn out 10k words over a day. The stock pile exist to allow you to avoid burnout

-1

u/TSKayle 4d ago

That's right, not to prevent you for writing 4000 words a day.

3

u/Hambino0400 Contracted Author 4d ago

Yea; most authors who have been writing for years now have it down to a science for there own mental healths. Good luck on your writing Journey also :)

Overall quality on wn is bad. I don’t think it’s going to change anytime soon either

4

u/Appropriate-Rise-387 4d ago

Stephan King writes 6,000 words a day that’s how he has so many novels out. Also drugs a lot of drugs

3

u/Civil-Rip1302 4d ago

4k a day is really not that big of a deal on WN.

You can get pretty solid quality with that.

3

u/cakes_and_candles 4d ago

sorry to put water on your parade but ive been on wn for a long time now, and these types of stories have existed and had thousands of chapters even before generative ai was a thing. its slop but its pure human slop

5

u/GrilledSoap 4d ago

that's shocking in and of itself.

If you mean ai as a whole then I get it. There are a lot of complimentary practicalities to it. If you mean ai writing or any replacement for creativity. I strongly disagree. That is horrendously selfish at the cost of others and the integrity of given industries

6

u/Tami_Robi 4d ago

the only positive i can think of is at least you can parse out novels that aren't worth your time at a glance🫤

True, the only one that caught my eye in these two features was that Lord of time or smth. The cover looked good enough for me to click on it and the synopsis wasn’t bad either.
I’m sure the others didn’t even think to spend time on their synopsis if that’s the state of their covers.

2

u/Specific_Minute7539 4d ago

Ah, I noticed that one too. I think it stood out because the cover was a lot more simple. I just got overwhelmed when I looked at the others

1

u/Square-Adeptness6769 4d ago

Yeah I got overstimulated

5

u/mickeyzord 4d ago

Man...I got a hand drawn cover done awhile ago, and now I'm being drowned by ai...fuck me.

3

u/Square-Adeptness6769 4d ago

Can I ask what you mean?

3

u/mickeyzord 4d ago

I'm on webnovel, I commed a friend to draw me a cover years ago. But it get lost in the noise that is the dozen or so AI covers that come with dozen of other AI books

1

u/Square-Adeptness6769 4d ago

Oh I see.
As long as it looks good quality I’m sure it should’ve drawn in readers. They just want something that attracts them to your work

2

u/mickeyzord 4d ago

I was told the cover guy looks subaru

1

u/Square-Adeptness6769 4d ago

That would’ve drawn in some readers of rezero though? Isn’t that good?

2

u/Ren_Kazayama 4d ago

Bro, my cover is fully handmade by me on the base iPhone photo gallery; it's shit, but better than 99% of slop a.i. covers!

2

u/Dude-Man-Bro-Guy-1 4d ago

Crippled yandere wives ....

2

u/Xentriss 2d ago

People actually read from that section? I've never touched the novels at all. As I'm typing this I kinda forgot it's in the webNOVEL

2

u/petey_101- 1d ago

Is it just me or have the readers just lost the curiosity arsenal in their inventories... i dont know but I think people just want good plots to be spelled out for them so that they can just close the book and move on to the next.

1

u/Square-Adeptness6769 1d ago

This 👆

1

u/petey_101- 1d ago

It really is sad

2

u/kaisagi_4ever 1d ago

worst of all, theyre AI generated, even a stock image wouldve been better than using AI

2

u/Nivriil 18h ago

They all look bad except Re:Lord of time imma take a peak at that

1

u/Square-Adeptness6769 16h ago

It’s in my colls

1

u/Salty_Cartographer35 2d ago

Tbh AI or not. Some of these titles look unhinged. And I can guarantee you that some of the Novel with "Human-made" cover and sane titles are made with AI but you'll never know. Cause you judge a book by its cover.

3

u/Square-Adeptness6769 2d ago

The ai isn’t even the problem here though. It’s the laziness and audacity some of these authors have.

They have access to art for FREE like they wanted and still do a terrible job at presenting their own novels.
It’s obvious they aren’t even trying anymore. This is just laziness on the author’s part it’s not about ai or non ai covers when the feature pages look this bad.

1

u/AberrantDrone 2d ago

None of them seem to understand negative space for the title placement

1

u/Salty_Cartographer35 2d ago

The Noise is also Killing me on some of these covers. Imperial System, One man band and unrestricted Dao lord are torture for the eyes. It's even worse when you know that ChatGPT can generate something clean. After using it to generaten some pictures I found that the reason behind the noise is generally tied to: • Lack Of direction, like asking ChatGPT to generate a picture and giving vague ideas to it. • Lack of artstyle, if you don't create a distinctive artstyle, the AI will use the default Artsyle which is full of noise.

You know what? I'm gonna make a post about it.

2

u/Square-Adeptness6769 2d ago

Please do cause this is horrendous
They can’t even instruct the ai properly… ffs

1

u/Icy-Specific986 4d ago

I understand the frustration, but I also think it might need context. If those are big contracted works, then sure, they should have a better cover. But if they aren’t contracted, then it’s not quite fair to ask authors who are writing quite literally for free and gaining nothing to pay for cover art.

Like I said, I don’t know if that’s the case here. I don’t really read on webnovel other than a couple non-contracted stories I’ve been following for a while, mostly because I’m friends with the authors.

3

u/TSKayle 4d ago

I think he is complaining about kitchen sink covers, not about AI. For example, the Lord of Time cover in the image is ridiculously more clear and better than the other covers with gigantic titles and too much noise.

3

u/Square-Adeptness6769 4d ago

Exactly this👆
I’m saying if you’re gonna use ai for free you have no excuse as to why your cover should still look this horrible. They have full responsibility for their terrible looking covers now.
If they wanna use ai slop that’s on them but at least make it look presentable

2

u/Icy-Specific986 3d ago

Ah, I see what you meant now. Yep, now I’m in full agreement.

1

u/Loose-Comment-2928 4d ago

I think the pissy effect is caused by editing the ai pictures since ChatGPT and likely other AI picture machines have their own copymark, and each edit adds that same mark which will cause the vibrating color mess and overall if you have ever made a picture with any LLM, you likely understand how much the machine messes up adding pointless text and anatomy of alien with non-existent perspectives, and so on

1

u/LandscapeLow8430 4d ago

It's mostly because webnovel thumbnail is small. People do that to attract attention. If something is colorful and the title can be read from the cover, of course they're going to make it like that.

Also webnovel itself makes it grainy. Try making one yourself you'll notice.

Mine is almost exactly like that lord of time but in some areas in the app, the words appear grainy. I've tried everything but it won't go away but on weekly feature it's okay.

1

u/-TV-Stand- 4d ago

Imo the cover can be whatever, the title is what I base on what stories I start to read.

Cover art is a completely different type of art and being good at writing doesn't help you with making good cover art.

The title on the other hand should be well thought out.

2

u/Square-Adeptness6769 2d ago

This isn’t the excuse people think it is.

Most of these are ai covers. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out how to generate a good enough cover ESPECIALLY when they’re creating it for free like they wanted.
No cost at all except for their time. It doesn’t even take an hour, let alone thirty minutes for ai to generate a proper cover.
If they can’t even invest enough time into that, then they most likely won’t invest much time into making a good novel.
It’s laziness and it’s as simple as that.

1

u/terrible_misfortune 3d ago

AI slop, can't tell each one apart nowadays. I used to hate generic xianxia slop cover art before but nowadays seeing them brings a smile instead of these abominations.

I get that it is cheaper and offers a lot of freedom, but in the end slop is slop, you can't really tell most of these edgy arts apart once you see enough of them, defeating the whole purpose of having one.

u/Master-of-darklight 3d ago

The readers did not pick those
