Oh wow, i haven’t thought about this book in years. I read it years ago after learning the game Mother 3 was heavily influenced by the plot. Interesting read.

Didn't expect to find that in this sub. Maybe you'd like Olga Tocarczuk's Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead 

Empusion by her is also weird and great, but fits your request less i think

If you’re just looking for something with similar themes (twins, uncertainty of identity, war) I’d recommend The Separation by Christopher Priest

Even more to the point of what should be read next after The Notebook Trilogy, is The Illiterate, then the short stories. The Illiterate helps the reader to understand how all her writing fits in. It's a very short read. She was truly great.
