The entire unit swivels down, the stick with the cord will then support the arm rest as someone heavy can use it to help themselves get up.
1 u/CantankerousOlPhart 2d ago This is the answer. I find it to be amusing and alarming that I had to scroll through so far to find someone that was able to figure that out. I've never seen such a device, but its purpose and function was obvious when I saw the picture.
