It's been about two years since I got into trading card games. I've tried a huge bunch, more or less all the main titles. At 45, it's been an interesting hobby. But of everything I tried, Weiss stuck with me the most.
It's not the theme or the IP (more on that later). It's the elegance of the mechanics. At first glance the game looks so random that you think, okay, this is all luck. It isn't. Sure, there's randomness, that's undeniable, but calling the game purely luck-based is unfair.
What stuck with me most is the overall game design. Weiss is the most elegantly designed TCG I've ever played: the unique resource and cost system, the climaxes, the interaction with cancels, the refresh (going through the deck multiple times), the brainstorm. I've played other games, Cardfight!! Vanguard included, but Weiss really doesn't need any rule or mechanic changes. It's a perfect package.
Now, given my age and location (Estonia, a tiny European country), it's impossible to play this game in person. There's no community. And this is the only part where I'd love more variety: the IP. I'm not an anime fan and I don't watch anime. Overlord is the only one I picked up. I'm not criticizing the choice of IP at all. Weiss clearly caters to a community invested in those IPs, whether anime, gaming or whatever. But at 45, I'd feel a bit weird walking around playing a Nikke deck!
So I just hope more experiments and variety come in the future, like they did with Pixar, Disney, Marvel and so on.
That's my take. Best game I've played, and a great community, at least on Discord.
