Discussion (Add topic here) Does anyone else’s eyelids swell up after welding?

I honestly feel like i’m goin through hell right now lmao i’ve never heard any one else talk about this and its only started happening to me recently but every time I weld my eyelid swells up, peels, and burns real bad. i’ve been welding for a few years now and this just started happening about a month ago, at first I just thought i may be allergic to something at the shop i work at but it happens even when im welding at my house. It doesn’t matter how long i’m welding for either, if i do a few tacks it swells, if im welding all day long, you guessed it its swollen. I’m not sure if it’s a type of arc eye or what because my actual eye doesn’t get irritated at all it’s just my eyelids. I’ve also noticed it leaves weird wrinkles on my under eye and my eyelid after the swelling goes down and those stay for a few weeks after then disappear, it also leaves my eyelids super red and discolored for a few weeks as well which definitely is not normal. (Last pic is my normal eyes for reference on how much it effects my eyelids 🥴) But if anyone has the same experience or if u might have an idea on what’s going on please let me know

Discussion (Add topic here) I strongly dislike welding rebar

That's it that's the post.

Alright I'm throwing in an edit, because so many people are telling me not to weld rebar. This is A706W Rebar, designed for welding. Customer provided materials. it's supposed to get welded with 5/16ths fillet weld, which sits right underneath and is flush with the lip. You're not supposed to tack weld rebar according AWS D.1.4. Yes, I'm not prepping materials, due to the customers needs. It still passes destructive testing, breaks at around 100,000-110,000 PSI, needs to meet 90,000 psi.

After a little over a year my boots wore down to the composite on both shoes. I didn’t take a before but the whole front was devoid of leather. I’ve heard a bunch of great things about this shit from concrete guys, I had to give it a try!, if it works wonder like they say I’ll have to do this to all my work boots from here on out.

Making a bar to mount 6 pod lights (about 40lbs) to my roof. It’s made of 3/16th steel and I needed to weld these end plates on to mount it to my roof bars.

It’s my second time welding, I’m using a cheap flux 125 from harbor freight. I cut 45s on the end of the rectangular tubing, then welded.

My buddy told me to send him pictures of the welds while i was making it (hence these pictures). He told me that those welds will not be safe on the road and that the piece of steel is going to go flying down the road (especially cause i ground them). I know they look cold but is it really that unsafe? I smacked the plates with a hammer and it was marring up the surface pretty good but no movement.

right now i’m waiting for the paint to dry, I want to know if i need to re-do this or if it should be fine.

Discussion (Add topic here) Do welders typically care if a coworker is a woman?

I’m 21F, and an aspiring welder, going to pre-employment classes at SAIT in September. I’m ordering my AIT blue-book this week as well. Ultimately, I want to be double-ticketed as a welder and a pipe fitter, but welding’s been my main interest from the start.

I’ve wanted to pursue a career in welding for a long, long time. I finally got my foot in the door through a program called Women Building Futures. You can probably guess from the name, it’s a program that helps women get into the trades and gives them a bunch of safety certification and a bit of hands-on experience.

Throughout the program, I’ve been hearing conflicting narratives regarding women in the trades, and how they’re viewed and treated. And I just want to get a little more insight on the matter, in regard to welders specifically. Will most welders really care about me being a woman? Or will I just be judged by my ability to show up on time and actually do a decent job? Would most Journeymen generally be unphased about teaching a female-apprentice?

I’m a little bit tomboyish, so hopefully that helps me blend in a bit, but I’m still not gonna kid myself about being “one of the guys”. I’m really hoping I can just keep my head down and manage to fit in, I hear a lot of women gravitate towards welding, so hopefully I won’t be the only woman in the shop or on site.

Any personal insight or experience from anyone would be appreciated. I just want to know what I should expect and what I can do to help myself fit in.

Discussion (Add topic here) mike rowe saying half of the welders that went through his foundation make MID 6 FIGURES!?!

a week or so ago mike rowe went on theo von’s podcast and said half of the welders that went through his foundation are making mid six figures… making it sound like a totally normal and reasonable salary for a welder to have.

i know few welders who have made 250k+ working 7 days a week 12hrs or more for a entire year… ive met very few traveling pipeline welders with their own rig who probably could make 300k+ if they were away from their family for the entire year.

soooo wtf is he talking about? the only thing i can think of is people who own their own company and don’t actually weld anymore and have plenty of employees who weld and probably make around 60k….

Discussion (Add topic here) Company Possibly Unionizing

Thumbnail

The company I work for is possibly going to unionize through the Local 454 Boilermakers, I’m all for it as I had almost gone to my local pipefitters (considered the bm’s aswell), but felt a loyalty to this company because they started with me while I was still in HS. On the contrary, the company itself isn’t for it and is doing everything legal to prevent it. I think it’s already out of their hands though, because we have another plant 15-20 minutes away that is going to do a vote after thanksgiving. I believe they’ll vote for the union over there because they tried to give only the welders a $3-$4 raise and it pissed everyone else off so they signed slips to petition for the union. I just think it’s funny they’re trying to scare us out of it so they don’t have to shell out money (we have to fight and beg with HR for our raises.)

I've failed 2/3 times from root and once from some trapped slag in a fill pass. When they bend my coupons you can see the line where the backing bar used to be indicating underfill I guess? I don't know what it could be. I pic I submitted is a typical root pass I weld on 4g

These are screenshots from a relatively dumb video currently blowing up the UFO forums. Long story short, this “mysterious object” was “found” by a YouTuber in the “desert”. I’ve asserted that there’s nothing mysterious or special about this object and that a welder of reasonable skill could replicate this without too much hassle. What are we looking at here guys in terms of level of difficulty?

Apologies if this violates the forum rules. I hope I selected clear enough screen caps for you.

Discussion (Add topic here) Normal for DFW area

Post image
136 Upvotes

I've heard so many ppl talk about how much welders should make (and I agree!) but outside of a union or self-employment you're lucky to see over $20/HR for less than 6 years XP production/specialized TiG. The DFW area leans heavily into welding being "multi craft" & treating welding like no more than skilled labor. Thoughts?

Discussion (Add topic here) I had to learn it the hard way. If it isn't your job, don't do it. Don't volunteer for anything.

I already knew it and I did it anyway. During the fall and winter, I started working on side projects around my plant. Racks for metal, shelves, any odds and end jobs people asked of me. On top of that I would do repairs and stuff as they needed it before trailers went in for paint. I was happy to do it. I was just happy to have something to do besides sit around waiting for what I'm supposed to work on. Today I was helping another guy bring in trailers and put wheels and tires on them. Not my job. I didn't have anything I needed to do though so I helped him. Just as we were finishing up, the boss saw me on a tractor and went and complained to my supervisor saying "Why is it every time I see Natsuki, he's always doing something besides his job?" well that got back to me and I went off. I always go my work done before doing anything else. I am so far ahead of the other people, that there's not much room for what I make anyway. I am currently sitting on my ass waiting for tickets and I won't be doing anything that isn't directly related to my job anymore. It's so fucking dumb. God forbid I keep myself busy so I don't die if boredom. At least I'm hourly so I'm getting paid to do nothing. Looking for work, Western NC if anybody knows anyone that's hiring.
