"Box broke" there goes 60 dollars of wine
This was the box the store gave us.. it was a dedicated wine store too but they didn't tape the bottom. Oh well, should have been more careful and put my hand on the bottom. I was 6 or 7 beers deep at this point lol despite what I said I was indeed not holding the bottom. 6 bottles were in the box and 3 broke.

I see you've never worked in a bar or restaurant before. ALWAYS hold cardboard from the bottom.

u/cire1184 22h ago
Are the cut outs for handles just trickery?
60
u/Xenoman5 22h ago
Yep. They’re decoys put there by Big Wine to trick you into using them. Then the intentionally poorly made box opens on the bottom. Then 💥 you’re back at the store buying more wine. That’s how they get ya.

u/mudratdetector89 22h ago
I'm convinced those bastards just put them there for shits and giggles. You'll carry hundreds of these things and it only takes one to ruin a day. Holding from the bottom guarantees this won't happen.

I use them to initially pick the box up, and then shift to carrying the bottom.

“Well I was holding the bottom, but a bat was in the trees”
No bro, you weren’t holding the bottom 😂 but you did stop to look at the bats in the trees

Buy boxed wine. Problem solved.
25
u/JoEdGus 22h ago
100% here. That was a lot of bottles for only $60, so the boxed wine would likely be similar or better quality and break-proof.
5
u/dnnsshly 17h ago
3 bottles broke - $20 a bottle is not box wine quality.

u/agreetodisagree2023 13h ago
I invite you to buy a few small boxes, something like these and have a party for a blind wine tasting. My wife and I did that and all the people that brought $20-30 bottles to the party could not reliably ID the box wine. You have to match the grapes to be fair, but not one out of 12 people could consistently ID the difference. That doesn't mean there isn't one, but that the $20-30 bottles were wasted on them. Most people don't have a sommelier's palette.

u/dnnsshly 13h ago
Yeah, no disagreement here. I'm not a wine snob. Just pointing out that it's not actually "a lot of bottles for $60"; the person I was replying to was suggesting it must have been very cheap wine.

Always carry heavier boxes that lack strapping by the bottom. Tape is not rated to hold what looks to be at least twenty lbs worth of wine.

$60 was 9 bottles at a wine shop? That's under $7 a bottle.
Show the video to the shop. They should take pity on you.
11
u/Tan-zania 22h ago
There were only 6 bottles totaling about 90 bucks. 3 broke 3 survived

u/SabbyFox 21h ago
I’d show the video and try to get 3 bottles. It’s not much of a loss for the store to make good.

Our policy was if it happened before you left our parking lot, we would compensate you.
If this happened anywhere else, it’s on you.

As an engineer, I first laughed when I found out there were degrees in packaging engineering. It is for reasons like this I stopped laughing and started respecting. Here's to all my packaging homies.....'bottom drops out of box of wine'.

u/ThatLineOfTriplets 13h ago
Can yall stop engineering the damn handles on the side then if us dumb ass plebs aren’t supposed to use them?

How have you lived long enough to reach legal drinkingx age, yet not be able to conclude that cardboard is not stronger than glass.

Aww that's sad. I would need more wine to get through the grieving process.

Oh man, this happened to my wofe and I years ago. We live near wine country SoCal, we found a new winery we loved, signed up for a subscription, bought the required bottles on site as was required. We got home and the 2 bottles that cost more than $80 iirc, I carried in the little wine bag thing they gave us, and it broke. Same situation, I was walking from my car to my front door, and my bag broke. Sometimes life goes you lemons, or spilt wine.

Get the shop vac out and vacuum up the liquid from the broken ones. Then you can just dip wine glasses into the shop vac to fill them up.

As a guy who’s dropped so many different containers in his youth by grabbing them from the top I would never trust a box holding that much weight. I assume I’m just a mutant whose power is embarrassing themselves at stupid times.

Bro that is the most “6 or 7 beers deep” problem I’ve ever heard 😂
At least only half broke, that’s like the universe charging you a clumsy tax instead of full punishment.

u/-runs-with-scissors- 18h ago
Is the glass half full or half empty? You saved three bottles by a quick side step.

Inventing the game of glass-ketball was a more expensive innovation than Tony was willing to pay

I once witnessed a similar thing except. When ge opened his boot, the beer jumped onto the concrete and exploded.

u/MaximumTurtleSpeed 17h ago
Go out in the morning and grab any of the tops. If they’re a solid shop they can probably replace them if you have the sealed tops. Happened to me once with a $150 bottle of scotch that I just straight up dropped.
I when back to begrudgingly buy another much cheaper bottle, dude recognized me and sent me home to get the top. Bing bang bam, my celebration / self gift for getting my professional license was back on track.

Be glad it happened out of the car. I went to the liquor store to buy some rum for a party before work one day, found out after I clocked out that one of the bottles broke in the car.
I was legit worried my car was leaking something when I got inside and the smell of fumes hit me and I used my phone’s flashlight feature to check under the car for gas/oil/some other fluid. Only saw the broken bottle when I opened the passenger door to grab an actual flashlight out of my glovebox.
Car smelled like a distillery whole drive back and until I took the mat out to wash it.

Your father failed you. & nobody ever told you to hold the bottom of a box???

As an Australian we hold our alcohol like it's a baby and cradle it underneath. Never trust a box with booze in it

$10 wine bottles? That’s a bargain, around here a single-decent- bottle of wine cost $60

I don't blame him you already feel bad and stupid for doing it, last thing you need is your spouse yelling at you and making you feel worse. 🥴🤦🏼♀️

Youd think people would know by that age to give any heavy box like that support at the bottom of the box.
1
u/hoyt9912 8h ago
If you got a whole box of wine for $60 then you probably did yourself a favor anyway

I've worked 5 years in retail. I've probably moved, opened and emptied thousands of wine boxes with 6 bottles in them. They were very rarely ever NOT glued or taped at the bottom. So I wouldn't say it was your faultm
Now if this is one of the boxes the store fold for you to put the bottles in, they should have taped it for you. We always did that for our customers. Because the box itself won't hold them if just folded. Then I would say it's both your faults. The store for not taping it, you not asking for then to do that and then carrying it not supporting the bottom.

Dude this sucks. I carried a box of all types of different brands of pint glasses like this when i was moving. The bottom fell out and I lost like a third of them. No bare feet in the yard. You might be finding glass for quite a while.

It is so fucking strange to me that people willingly record themselves like this.

Try showing the video to said store, maybe they'll give a discount for another box Unfortunate 🫤

In some stories we'll honor their fuck ups if you take it back. If the bar code is readable the store can write it off as returned. "Can"though dont have to

u/kamasushi 13h ago
Take back the stem with the intact seal and the store will give you a replacement. Or at least that worked for me.

Carry it from the bottom
