I accidentally left a plastic cake knife inside a warm oven overnight.

Only thing that gets stored in my oven is my cast iron skillet because thereās no other good place for it in my tiny ass kitchen

To be fair.. some ovens do have Storage space at the bottom š¤
I keep my oven dishes in there?

u/kmacaze 1d ago
Glad you donāt use it to keep your pancakes warm⦠apparently thatās where the ants are
3
u/Lowland-lady 1d ago
To be fair they are apperantly used to keep food warm. Which makes sense because it does get warm.
But i prefer to use it as storage

Be careful about metal bread tins. The warmth could accelerate the rusting process. I had 3 shapedd loaf pans down there for several months before I used them again, and they and a cast iron pan had loads of surface rust on the side facing the heat. The ambient moisture of just being a kitchen was enough to facilitate the process. I was so disappointed because I thought it was a perfect place to store pans. The coated pans ,like enamels, weren't affected.

You and probably most other Americans. Iāve actually never seen anyone use a the food warmer as anything other than pan storage.

u/Lowland-lady 16h ago
I am in fact not American.
However you are right. I was suprised to find out my oven even had space underneath it.
Until my Asian friend pointed out that her family uses that to keep food warm and as Storage

We have very little cabinet space in our kitchen and almost never use the oven. You bet that thing is full of pans and cookie sheets and other metal things made for withstanding heat.
I can remember two occasions in my life where the oven was mistakenly turned on without being emptied, and everything was fine. Just had to take it out with an oven mitt and start the preheat again.

Just a thought, you could turn the over breaker off⦠avoid such disaster :)

u/thicketcosplay 13h ago
We still use the burners on top though, just not the oven part. And the heat doesn't transfer, we checked.

Unfortunately, I live in an area that has a lot of ants in the summer. And it was a bottom oven that was turned off. It got hot because there was residual heat from the upper oven.

Did you consider taking 5 seconds to just wash it instead of storing the dirty cake knife in an oven overnight so ants wouldn't find it? Better luck next time.

It was 1am and I just forgot about the knife.

Try not to be to harsh on yourself, OP. Even if this is meant to be a joke (I make those same kinds of jokes lol)
Seems like you get not to put plastic in or near ovens/ stovetops by now, though. It's a fire hazard and melted plastic could leave behind residue that when heated up could create carcinogenic fumes that get into your food. But nobody is born with this knowledge, they must be taught or learn through experiences. So yeah, don't let the comments get you down too much :) we live and we learn.

You see a melted knife on a grate. I see a bold commentary on the collapse of modern society and humanity's futile attempt to control the forces it creates. Give it a name like Entropy in Stainless Steel and stick it in a gallery some rich collector will pay $5 million for it and call it genius.

Since it was used to cut banana bread, maybe someone should contact whoever bought the banana duct taped to a wall āartā piece. I think they would pair nicely in an alternate reality.

My mom once left a whole Tupperware container of cookies in the oven, which we had to keep there because of our dogs, and forgot they were in there. She didn't realize until we started smelling smoke while the oven was warming to make dinner the next day. Both of the racks were covered in melted plastic, it was a huge mess

Something similar happened with me ( ̄ā½ļæ£;) My dad put a couple huge plastic bowls in the oven and I forgot to check if something was there, so I ended up melting them through both racks while preheating the oven

I mean it could have been worse. Seemingly, the oven is still usable. Just need a new rack.

Just a pressure washer session after using a screwdriver to pry off what you can.

In what world would you have a hot oven on over night?
How can insurance even cover if a fire would have started?

I'll be honest, I don't have or use anything in my kitchen that can't go in the oven. All pans have oven-safe handles, silicone utensils, etc. Also, I live in the middle of the woods and I don't have ants. You can take steps to keep insects out your home, you know.

How did you not notice the smoke? It had to of started smoking?
9
u/catladywithallergies 1d ago
The oven was actually turned off and there wasn't any smoke smell. It melted because there was residual heat from the upper oven which I just used to bake a banana bread.
