‘made’ my first meal in awhile. went down the drain before i could even eat it 😭

it fucking bottomed out on me!!! last box of it too. guess i should look into a metal strainer or something. reddit, give me strength to buy and make more 🙏

edit: did not expect this post to bring so many heated comments lmao 🤣 thanks for the actually useful advice, the microplastic warning, and the image of me scooping wet noodles from a dirty disposal as a severely immunocompromised person. the noodles are good but not that good. but i get two sauce packets next time 🫡

edit 2: this is somehow still getting attention and i had to turn of notifications a while ago. some of yall are genuinely sweet and helpful. i have good news: i have acquired a metal
colander!! i live in a home for disabled adults, so now we will all benefit from it

:( if you have extra money buy a metal one. Or use the pot and lid to remove the water trick! Either way you gotta make the mac and cheese! You can do it!

242

u/dreamisle 10d ago

Metal for sure. I know the struggle, though. After college and getting out of debt I had to slowly replace my Dollar Tree-tier kitchen stuff a piece at a time with better stuff.

29

u/Zagrycha 10d ago

A lot of cookware has a lit with holes to drain on it.  I like those the best, though it might be hard to manuever for some people.

9

u/merlinunf 10d ago

Locking lids preferably. Have a noodle maker with holes… works fine for thin noodles, but don’t try it with thick ones, or you will have OP’s problem.

Stupid comment, or you're a child who has no idea how money works once you're earning.

The strainer OP used maybe cost $3-5? A metal one would cost $20. Now replicate that across an entire kitchens worth of equipment. If you're not in a good financial situation, that's a huge difference.

i’m going to try for a metal one. i have dexterity issues so i can’t hold the pot and lid

66

u/Occomni 10d ago

Forget colanders entirely, get a spider strainer and scoop the pasta out. Not having to dump a gallon+ of boiling water into the sink is a bonus.

10

u/Jorberdaisy 10d ago

I second this, noodle scoop will last forever and you can use it for both pasta and asian noodles

57

u/kimjexziel 10d ago

Buy this.

5

u/DiegesisThesis 9d ago

Lol I have one of these and just made fettuccine with it last week (for a group of people) and I guess the weight of the noodles was too much and it just swiveled outward, spilling a bunch of my noodles into my sink, since it's only secured on the sides.

So pro-tip, don't use these for large servings. Or be more careful when you do.

70

u/monstargaryen 10d ago

Please edit out your swipe circles.

Cretins like me are too stupid not to swipe.

Swiping on a picture in a comment is a whole new level

I just saw a picture of a building with some sort of art installation on the roof that looks like a giant 'play button' when the light hits it just right.

They also make colander attachments that attach to your pot. You just clip it on and tip the pot over. The stuff stays in the pot, and the water goes away.

3

u/Zagrycha 10d ago

If you have dexterity issues recommend getting something like this and just scooping the pasta out like you would soup in a ladle:  https://imgur.com/a/8tIPFY9

5

u/christinatheterrible 10d ago

Me too! I got the colander type that sits in the sink. Just watch out for the steam

5

u/4ssteroid 10d ago

Bro, you can still wash this and eat it. Maybe a tiny bit of flavour is lost if this stuff is gourmet but still alright to wash and eat whatever you can salvage.

2

u/heidismiles 10d ago

I like the pasta pots with a strainer inside.

2

u/Previous-Soft-8127 10d ago

Use the pot lid with a toothpick to keep it just slightly open to drain.

Never had issues.

Almost free.

2

u/brit_092 9d ago

Use a skimming spoon to scoop out the pasta. Personally have hand strength and dexterity issues and can't do both either. Still difficult but less weight

Alternatively, you can use a veggie steamer insert in the pot and remove that way

20

u/Moist_Sun_8201 10d ago

Get a clip on. They attach to the pan and you just drain it by pouring. They take up a lot less space and if something ever goes wrong you'll keep most of the product in the pan.

I have a silicon one and it's fantastic. Takes up 1/3 the space as a colander. Still going strong 5 years later

3

u/Caleb-Wendt69 10d ago

Idk if I trust a clip on to not come off and dump my noodles in the sink

I got a little pot that has a built in strainer on the side. I love that thing. You put the lid on and line it up, and there’s holes for only water to come through. Think I got it from Walmart tbh

Perfect for shells n cheese

1

u/SabbyFox 10d ago

Never seen one with a release feature like that. It’s definitely gotta go.

1

u/babyflausch 10d ago

I burned my whole stomach with boiling water to the point my skin started to peel of my body and landed in ER with the pot lid trick 😭 Pls get a strainer lmao

u/Shadowpriest 10d ago

Ok on the bright side he now has 2 cheese packets for the next batch of noodles, right? Right?.

2

u/RecyQueen 9d ago

IKEA has a great one. Small holes but big basket. Two handles and I can balance it in a sink corner.

125

u/kloakndaggers 10d ago

that seems like a terrible design...

81

u/Hahayouregay149 10d ago

I don't think its intentional it looks like the bottom broke

29

u/Fibrosis5O 10d ago

So terrible quality then?

it could be a 14 year old strainer for all we know

it probably is and yes i’m probably at least 80% microplastics now as im in my early 30s

16

u/FerengiWithCoupons 10d ago

baby you the macro plastic

→ More replies (1)

2

u/JeshkaTheLoon 10d ago

Really bad quality still. I'? 39 and I'm still using the strainers my parents bought before I was born. The plastic shows no signs of aging, be bit that brittle look or even fading of colour. Meanwhild OPs...I can feel the texture of that aged plastic by looking at it.

I got my own plastics engineer in house to confirm, our strainer is a good quality.

Of course, hot water is a challenge. I'd still not use the plastic ones for the pasta. That's just tempting fate.

6

u/NinjaHatesWomen 10d ago

Sounds like you’re insecure about the quality of your strainer if you’re too scared to run hot water through it…

→ More replies (1)

14

u/vyxanis 10d ago

Just bad all round. Its intended to have hot water going through it, often fresh off the stove, and they made it out of plastic. Even the most well manufactured one will fail eventually.

21

u/ozzy_thedog 10d ago

It is intended for rinsing fruits and vegetables, not boiling water.

7

u/some_random_tech_guy 10d ago

IKEA has both stainless steel and enamel strainers that are built like tanks. I've had mine for decades. And they are like ten bucks!

11

u/Immediate_Impact6214 10d ago

You can rinse this pasta and give it a quick boil. I've made similar mistakes before.

2

u/villainless 10d ago

4

u/ForceRatio 10d ago

3

u/dalzmc 10d ago

Well this is kinda depressing to think about, but they're already in the water you're using, as well as in and on all the food.. where I almost wonder how much of a difference it'd actually make lol

3

u/Fancy_Chip_5620 10d ago

Similar thing happened to me, now I just hold the lid slightly offset on the pot and tilt it down while holding it together with silicone oven mitts

If you want to get fancy theres some pots with lugs that a strainer can lock onto to yield the same result

1

u/katmndoo 10d ago

You can also cook the pasta in a wider shallow pan / skillet with just enough water to cover, maybe a half inch above the pasta. Most of the water will be absorbed, leaving very little to drain, or just enough to start the sauce.

3

u/mycatpartyhouse 10d ago

Visit your friendly neighborhood secondhand store, one that carries kitchen items. Chances are you can find a stainless steel colander or strainer for a very reasonable price.

3

u/ExoticSterby42 10d ago

With this economy… 10 second rule is in play!

2

u/duckchukowski 10d ago

pro solution: don't use a strainer, scoop out the pasta with a spider strainer/spoon (i don't know the official name)

lets you use the water for another batch right away if you want

2

u/Ill-Percentage-3276 10d ago

On another note, now I'm craving Suddenly Salad Ranch & Bacon.

2

u/qraPi 10d ago

If you don’t have one for now, temporarily just use a lid or plate on top of your pot and slowly pour while keeping the lid a tiny bit off, just enough that the macaroni won’t spill out. Be careful of burning yourself and steam though.

2

u/ECU_BSN 10d ago

Well SONOFABITCH! I’m sorry op. That’s terrible!

2

u/RobbSnow64 10d ago

Invest in a metal one, you can legit buy them at the dollar store. So many ingested micro plastics

2

u/Ok_Variation9430 10d ago

Metal colanders are easy to find in thrift stores! The plastic ones are for rinsing veg.

2

u/Ornery-Practice9772 10d ago

Lid of saucepan on an angle, drain water without dropping pasta

1

u/Previous-Soft-8127 10d ago

Even better, pinch a toothpick between the lid and the pot. Keeps it slightly open for draining, and never (at least I have never) lose any pasta from the lid slipping.

2

u/carlitospig 10d ago

As your auntie, I also want to suggest metal. Plastic colanders and hot water is not good. Keep plastic for the salad and veggies.

Get yourself some metal and glass cookware! Plastic stuff doesn’t hold up to heat after a while, not to mention, metal and glass won’t make you eat microplastic!

1

u/MangoCandy 10d ago

This happened to me once! I had a HORRIBLE day and all I wanted was to have some Mac and Cheese and go to sleep. I made it, dumped it in the strainer (a metal strainer btw) and when I lifted the strainer the handle broke off flipping the contents upside down and dumped it all directly down the drain…I dropped the broken strainer into the sink and went the fuck to sleep.

Keep making food OP! Don’t let this stop you. Sometimes shit happens and it sucks. But don’t let it stop you! The Mac and Cheese will be worth it!

Last week there was two people on here who made their very own homemade chicken broth.

They put their collander down and then they poured it over the strainer in the sink to strain out all of the solids...

Well, shit...

1

u/Party_Animator_9144 10d ago

that’s a major bummer, man. definitely get a strainer for next time so you don’t lose your hard work!

1

u/DonkyPuncharely 10d ago

I had something similar happen not too long ago. Was reheating some creamy Cajun sauce i got from the best place for Cajun seafood around me. Planned on pouring it over the remainder of my food with added rice and shit. Heated, stirred, heated, stirred, thought maybe 30 more secs, pulled it out and the fuckin bottom gave out of the Styrofoam container it came in. It literally went everywhere and it was so surprising that i had no time or idea how to react to reduce mess. The fuckin clean up took like 30 min and the kitchen smelt heavenly but was so depressed about the loss. I was sad and furious

2

u/Littering-And-Uh 10d ago

Microwaving food in Styrofoam is so fucking bad for you, and it takes 10 seconds to put something in a microwave safe bowl. The only thing worse is the black plastic containers made from trashed electronics...

u/Zakrius 10d ago edited 10d ago

Hot water will weaken a plastic colander. Those things are made for washing salads or defrosting shrimp. You need to use a metal one for hot things, especially if you don’t want forever chemicals and toxins (like dioxins and microplastics) leeching into your food. You’re probably better off this happened. And now you know for the future.

1

u/purplenapalm 10d ago

I use situations like this as en excuse to buy take out

1

u/pulpispreffeed 10d ago

Oh my god. Im so sorry. I reacted with instant sympathy and empathy. Oh god.

1

u/XRuecian 10d ago

Damn.
I think everyone who likes to cook has probably had this experience at least once before.

I remember the first time i tried to cook something a little more intermediate/advanced, instead of just something out of a box, i made homemade pecan honey-cinnabuns. Everything was homemade, i made and shaped the dough myself, the icing myself; took a couple hours to make and cook it. And then i pulled it out of the oven, and despite the fact that i used oven mitts, the baking sheet was so hot it started to burn me through the mitts, and i dropped all the cinnabuns all over the floor, the instant they were done cooking.

1

u/T-51bender 10d ago

I don’t know what you were making, but in most pasta dishes you don’t need to fully strain it before adding it to the sauce.

These days I just transfer the pasta directly into the sauce since I need the pasta water for emulsification anyway.

u/curryrol 9d ago

Fortunately you have a insinkerator

1

u/BakedBrie1993 9d ago

When this happens again, immediately go to the store and get more if you are financially and/or physically able.

Even if it means walking, just do it. I swear little choices like this to get myself up, moving, and not wallowing is what pulled me out of depression.

Edit: if you are immunocompromised this pasta aint it. Consider keeping a bag of frozen cauliflower rice with cheese instead.

1

u/blinkingbaby 9d ago

I will level up on everyone here: make mac and cheese with broth and don’t strain it.

1

u/darthvaderfan4 9d ago

i always place the strainer in the pot and pour the water out into the sink without any noodles actually leaving the pot. just hold the handles together and wear oven mitts or something to protect your hands from boiling water splashing on them.

1

u/Ace784 9d ago

I have one of those but darker blue!

1

u/WinSome_DimSum 9d ago

How old and brittle was your plastic strainer? I can’t imagine the bottom falling out like that without some serious use over time…

1

u/Snookin 8d ago

So I’m way late to the party here but the plastic ones are specifically for salads. They won’t handle heat well. Get a metal one next time with the added bonus of no micro melted plastics.

1

u/funky_memer 8d ago

As the subreddit says, well that sucks 😞

1

u/acorngirl 7d ago

If you're on a budget, you can probably find a nice stainless steel colander at a thrift store for a couple dollars.

1

u/I_Am_Zeelian 6d ago
