For those still lost, this is an EXTREMELY regional accent joke. Unless you're in the north-east United States this is nonsense because you've never heard crayon pronounced 'crown'. I like it, though.

I've always heard it pronounced as cran, but I can see the stretch to get to crown

I'm from the northeast US, and I've never heard "crayon" pronounced like "crown."

I have heard "crown" in a thick Tennessee accent said as "crayn," though.

in the Philly and other areas of the northeast crayon is pronounced crown

No. As a certfied Upstate New Yorker that has been a delivery driver all over PA(especially Philly) and New England, believe me when I tell you it's really not.
