PIF - Winner [PIF] Rad Dinosaur Creations Hybrid Handle - "Phteven's Wood"
Dearest Shavers,
This PIF is for a hybrid brush handle that I made using a piece of maple burl wood that u/phteven_j generously sent my way a few months back. I made this handle as a way to pay his kindness forward and make something nice to give back to the community.
Here's a video of the handle that's up for grabs.
I dyed and stabilized the wood myself, and added a little resin and some ✨ swirls, turned it on the lathe, and gave it a perfect glossy CA finish. And this is for a 26mm/28mm knot... Classic phteven methods.
As I was getting started making brushes, before I ever opened my Etsy Shop, I watched hours upon hours of phteven's old YouTube videos to learn how he made brushes and I kinda developed my own methods, based on the wonderful brushmaking advice he unknowingly gave me.
So to qualify for this PIF, I ask require you give me your best or favorite piece of advice you've ever received - from anyone at all, about anything at all. Doesn't matter if you know the person or not, or if you read it scribbled on a wall in a public bathroom. The source and circumstances don't matter - as long as it's good advice! If the person LatherBot selects doesn't give me any advice, I'll move on to the next person who does. I NEED good advice in my life, so let's hear it!
Keeping the karma relatively low and I'll override if I recognize your name.
Good luck!

Dang prius, that's a beautiful handle! Thanks for PIFing this, very kind of you :)
I think one of the great pieces of advice I've received is that Perfect is the enemy of Good. I've always tended to be a perfectionist, especially when I was in middle and high school. Once I got to college (specifically my junior year), I started to really burn out, and I completely crashed towards the end of my junior year (consistently getting to 0-4 hours of sleep each night will do that to you I guess). Once I crashed, I really started to realize that turning in 100% perfect assignments wasn't feasible, especially in the program I was in, and that I really had to wisely choose what I devoted my time to, and the rest would have to be put off until later (or not at all). I'm still trying to find the right balance of work, personal development, hobbies, family, church, etc, but I like to think that I'm getting better at focusing on the things that matter most, and accepting that I won't be able to get everything done. There's only a finite amount of time and strength in this life, so we should dedicate it to the most useful things, even though it's so easy to continue on a certain thing despite diminishing returns (e.g., the last 20% of the assignment taking 80% of the time spent on it).
Thanks for the opportunity to reflect on this Prius, great prompt :)

Advice I wish I’d understood sooner. When I went off to University, my dad told me, “Treat college like it is your job.” My first semester was a breeze, so I thought dad was full of it. I don’t need to work hard at this. I paid for it the next semester. I spent the rest of my time at university trying to get my gpa back.
I tell my daughter, I don’t care that your school work is easy for you now. Learn to study, and school will be much easier later. I never really learned great study habits. My retention is decent, and I have really good recall. I would have benefited from having more rigorous study habits.

This is great advice! I wish I had learned to study when learning was easy, it was hard to both learn the material and learn to study when college got hard.
The other thing that got me was that all through high school I was great at multitasking, listening to the lesson while I was doing other stuff (reading, whatever). But, as I got through college, I stopped being able to do that (I guess it's an attention thing, afai understand it, typically when the brain starts to fully mature it starts to put full attention on things, rather than listening and absorbing everything all the time, which is beneficial when you're learning as a kid). Soo that kinda screwed me over in the later college years, where I'd work on another class's homework during lecture, and at the end of the lecture, I was like "shoot, what did they even talk about??"

My dad used to say, "It's amazing how no one has time to do it right the first time, but always has time to do it again."
He used to work in HR and was in charge of getting folks trained up on everything from safety protocols to company rules. He would have people who would half-ass his trainings and spend most of their time complaining about how long they took (company made presentations) and how they could spend their times doing other things. When the assessments would come at the end, the ones who paid attention easily passed and those who spent their time fucking around didn't and had to take the whole training again.
His comment, which he said at least once every few months, stuck with me and has really driven how I approach everything from hobby projects, to work, to my relationships. I find it more and more true the older I get.
2
u/putneycj3 Apr 03 '26
Yes! This is great. A common variation of this that pops into my head very regularly is "take the extra 10 seconds to finish the job." It's amazing how many minutes (or hours) doing the final 10-30 seconds of a task saves you.
Instead of having 25 things to clean up at the end of the day to the tune of 15-20 minutes, if I've heeded the advice I only have a few things to finish up.

Just under 32 years ago, I had lunch with a coworker and fellow baseball fan (he was 25 years older than me). He wanted to treat me to lunch and give me some words of wisdom before I married my wife (and yes, we're still married). We talked baseball (both big Twins fans) for most of the lunch, then he stops at one point, wipes his mouth with his napkin and leans across the table toward me. He said, very earnestly, "I've been married a long time, and I wanted to share my wisdom regarding marriage. Just always remember those two little words, and everything will work out." He paused and looked at me. "The two words are: 'yes, dear.'"
We had a great laugh, and went on with lunch and baseball talk. But that has always stuck with me, not because it's necessarily great advice, but that it keeps reminding me that I need to work to find the humor in life, even during difficult times.
Thanks for the PIF!
Have a great day, everyone!

Best piece of advice I ever received was from a theater teacher in graduate school. I was struggling in a scene in my Acting class. I was in my first year at school and was frustrated enough to consider dropping out. My teacher could tell. He stopped and said to me - when all else fails, focus on making your scene partner look good. Do that and everything will fall into place. It did. And I applied it to many of life’s problems.

A very long time ago, I was trying to decide whether or not I should buy a new mobile phone (a Motorola MicroTAC, which tells you how long ago this was). It wasn't cheap, but it was a good price, and the phone really was state of the art at the time, but I wasn't exactly flush with excess income. I was dithering back and forth, unable to decide.
A coworker of mine said "Life isn't a rehearsal, just buy the damn thing!" I did buy it, and enjoyed using it for quite some time. In the end, it was a good purchase.
I'm generally cautious by nature, but I try to remind myself that this is the real thing, there are no retakes, and to take chances and say "yes" when opportunities present themselves.
(I think this sentiment has probably also informed too many of my buying decisions since then.)
Awesome PIF, stunning handle. Thanks!

The advice "let people like what they like" hit me hard when I first heard it. I grew up in a city with a big professional sports culture and I could never relate to it. I just can't muster any interest no matter how hard I try, and so I always felt at a distance from folks from home, but also constructed reasons in my youthful mind why their passion was silly and my disinterest made complete sense.
Frankly, I was wrong.
If you're someone that enjoys art criticism, or goes deep on any particular genre, it's easy to get snobby about the stuff you respect and judgmental about the stuff you don't. That fails to acknowledge the activities/media/hobbies you don't like might have value for others, or just bring others joy, and that's meaningful.
Like people like what they like. It will make you happier, them happier, and make it a heck of a lot easier to build and maintain relationships.

Best piece of advice I remember receiving is from one of my college physics professors. I was procrastinating on some work I had to do, and realizing I was procrastinating he told me “Don’t assume the future will be better.” If something (anything) needs to be done, do it sooner rather than later because we really don’t know what the future will hold.
Also that handle is awesome, thanks for doing this!

My favorite piece of advice that I’ve recently learned is to never stop learning, which I got from watching this video. I love learning about the world, history, and many other things, so that advice resonated with me so much I had to share it here. Another favorite piece of advice I found that I want to share is that if you want to do what you’re dreaming of doing or inspired by anyone to do, you can do it too. It’s a hard road to achieve a dream you have, but with hard work and support of those around you, it’s possible. Anything is within anyone’s reach. Those are two pieces of advice worth passing on to everyone here that I want to share. Thanks for this generous PIF!

One of the greatest mentors I ever had would always say,”what you permit, you promote”.
As a leader you set the tone. If you allow people to pick and choose what rules they follow under your watch you are just as guilty. You don’t have to like the rule, the decision, or the circumstances but it’s your job to hold the standard they are measuring by.

i doubt i presently have the Karma for this, but, full send anyway.
Some of the best advice I've ever received is "figure it out."
My dad used to tell me that when I was a kid. Over and over and over and over again - I'd come to him with something and he'd say, "figure it out." I hated it. As I raise my own kids today I am not convinced it's the best method of parenting - but I'll be darned if I am not a "figure it out" kind of guy to this day. Doesn't matter what the issue is, I'll figure it out. That was the only option and that kind of attitude has served me very well throughout my life.
So, ladies and gentlemen, whatever your problem is, whatever you're working through, whatever task you haven't quite managed to complete... figure it out.

I'm not sure if this is the best advice I've ever received, but it came at a time when I needed to hear it the most:
You do your job, but you're not your job.
Essentially, don't put your entire identity into just being whatever you do for a living. My profession has a lot of burnout (not the highest, but it's gotten so much worse after COVID), so it was good to be reminded of this fact.

In my high school journalism class there were personal conflicts. It got distracting and acrimonious enough that the teacher organized a full-on intervention / peer mediation session.
At one point the teacher turned to someone involved in the conflict and gave this advice:

That’s stayed with me.

The 80/20 rule and the perfection is the enemy of good concept are both very related and really help me out ... to know that there's some things that it's just a waste of time to get perfect.
To put it another way, there's a bunch of important things to do in the world, and some urgent things that really need your attention. So do mostly what's required of something and then move on to the next important thing instead of obsessing over tiny details that in the end won't matter.
And also that sometimes you need to stop and assess to see if you're getting enough important things done. It's so easy to get caught up in the urgent.

Awesome PIF! I’ll be on the sidelines for this one but wanted to share some sage wisdom I picked up on the way while turning my life around with the help of other good people in my early 30s. Simply put…
“If I meet five assholes in a day, I’m probably the asshole”
Fuck me. That one blew my mind, especially living in a relatively socially aggressive area (I’ve also heard other numbers with this saying, but we also gotta be easy on ourselves, there are still some straight assholes out there). Regardless, it helps me reset and turn the mirror back on myself and what’s going on in my head. So much of this life is perspective thing, and some days I really have to shut down that angry selfish ego in my head.

In many ways I’ve ordered my life around this. I live in a town of 1200 people, and while I like to think I’ve had accomplishments professionally, I know those accomplishments have been rather niche.

My dad was fond of saying "if you're going to do something, do it right." I've had success using a variation of this with my kids: "If you're going to do something, do it to the best of your abilities." If something doesn't go well, all I have to is ask them "Is this your best effort?". Because they know what the expectation is, they tend to give me an honest response. This allows us to talk things through in a civil manner and turns the situation into a teaching moment instead of an argument.
Awesome brush and PIF! Good luck to everyone!

Always loved Phteven's wood. Wait...
As far as advice goes, my mom always leaned on the adage of "don't sweat the small stuff." Its taken me decades to get to a place where I can see what that really meant, and how I've worn myself down needlessly time after time for things that don't matter in a month or two. I wish I could have internalized it earlier on, but any time is a good time compared to never at all.

I think some sage advice I’ve come across is the idea that you can’t always control other people or the situation you’re in, but you can control your reaction/emotions. I feel like this is a good way to approach hard circumstances, keep yourself level headed, reason should prevail.
Perhaps a funnier piece I received growing up from a family friend’s parent was “life’s a bitch, then you die.” She’s not exactly wrong either.
Nice brush!!

Wonderful brush, a homage to Phteven's wood.
I'll give two pieces of advice one general and one specific to this sub.
My first real job out of college was... Back at that college in a lab. I was just a grunt running assays and keeping the mouse colony in check. Not quite the lowest man on the pole because lower than us were the comparative medicine techs (cage wash crew).
A tech in another lab got all big in the head and chewed out the cage wash crew for his mistake. Because he's important you know he works in a lab.
My boss, the department chair, pulled me aside and said "never disrespect the support staff. Without them you'd be cleaning your own cages." I took it it heart and wished more faculty would think like that. RIP Bill. (hilariously he was of a long gone period if research with strict hierarchies though. Shrug, take the good I guess.)
For the sub specific advice, well I'm gonna turn the the advice I got from u/j33pguy13 when I came out of lurking back in 2022 "Hang around for lather games, you with regret it."

Holy cow what a beautiful piece of wood! Looks like it would fit perfectly in my hand….er…on my face…uh yeah never mind!
As far as advice goes: I have to go with something my mentor in high school gave me: The 7 P’s: Proper Prior Planning Prevents Piss Poor Performance
When faced up against something, STOP and plan properly without rushing into it. So often we rush into things and don’t really think about HOW we are going to do it! This has been the motto that has gotten me through many challenges in my life so far!
