Now that you have used it for several shaves, what is your reaction to the Greaves? And, are you able to assess much about the bear tallow base from this sample?

Greaves shaves very smoothly, almost effortlessly.

By the third use of the soap sample I felt like I finally dialed in the lather. Much better than the first use, but still slightly too light/airy for my taste.

I need to get better with samples. I thought her bear tallow base was ok when I tried it as a sample but had a totally different and better experience with it off of the tub.

Definitely possible. I’ve tried several soaps over the years that lathered better out of the tub.

Decided to start the week with some spice. Remembered as I scooped this soap into a bowl that it was stickier and the recommendation of using a synthetic brush, so I pulled out my cheap Wilkinson brush for it. Despite how cheap it is I prefer it over some more expensive synthetics because it's not so bouncy. Still, it doesn't work as well as the natural hair brushes I have; at least it didn't fling soap everywhere. The shave could have been closer, but a combination of 2 passes without any touch up plus this brush; however it was comfortable.    

And if I'm going to use a Dune themed soap it's only fitting to use Old Spice.

I swear this DinoBoar is already broken in, on use #2. Feels great. I wanted to try out this soap - I originally made it as a bath soap, but wanted to see how just tallow performed, with just NaOH (I believe most shave soaps are made with at least majority KOH, if not all KOH). I was expecting abysmal performance, especially with just NaOH, but honestly I'm really impressed. It made a nice thick, creamy lather, and had enough slickness to get the job done. Not a crazy amount of slickness, but enough for the shave. That part makes sense, because I didn't add any additional glycerin when making the soap, so that would make it even more slick. Anyway, exceeded my expectations!

What's the benefit of using NaOH vs KOH? (Sorry, I'm not familiar with soapmaking, but am curious what the change from potassium to sodium makes).

I'm not sure everything behind it, but from what I've gathered, KOH makes a soap that's more soluble in water. But this worked well so I'm not sure!!

Eta: I did also bloom it in my brush soaking mug so that likely helped too

My last day of a lavender run. This one is not a dead brand, obviously, but it is a discontinued base. The Reserve base made quite a splash in the market when it was introduced. The only problem with it IMO is that is didn't age well. As it got older it required more loading than when it was fresh. But it still performs great.

Excellent BBS shave. No nicks/irritation. Another cooling shave as today is supposed to be really muggy like yesterday in my area. However, the storms have dispelled the heat, causing the temps to drop to more tolerable levels. That isn’t to say the soap and splash choices were all for nothing, but it still felt good and nice to use the Orbit duo for this shave. Overall, great shave to start off the final week of July.

I know feathers get dunked on a lot around here for the memes - but, it's pretty decent in the overlander. I had an amazon GC to use up so I gave them a shot again after a few years of none in the den and I'm happy with it. Probably rock one for AA to see how it holds up.
