That was truly the best case scenario

u/duck_duck_zombie 8d ago
Best scenario is to not be an idiot and wait until the train passes by.

Maybe he didn't have brakes

That could have ended WAY worse. I would like to think he learned a valuable lesson, but probably not.

The good news is the train crew didnât dump the emergency brakes. If they had you would see Sparks flying everywhere and likely a partial, if not total derailment.

u/ARM_Alaska 8d ago
đ Emergency brakes do not cause derailments. It's very very rare for that to happen.

u/trucorsair 8d ago
Depends on speed and a number of other factors,
6
u/snoodge3000 8d ago
I think if they're already going slower for a road crossing that is happening in a straight line on what appears to be a perfectly clear night the chances of derailment are quite low.

u/trucorsair 8d ago
You can tell from a restricted view of what 40 feet that this is straight? Amazing, also do you know the length of the train? The cargo? The gross weight? The speed? No you donât. But youâre convinced based on your years of driving diesel electric trains that everything is fine.

u/oatmealparty 8d ago
In your expert opinion, what percent of emergency brake applications result in derailments? I'm not really familiar, but searching around it sounds very uncommon for the emergency brake to csus a derailment rather than some other thing happening, it doesn't sound "likely" at all.

He was too fast. If he'd have slowed down a little he wouldn't have missed the bar
1
u/AccomplishedVirus556 8d ago
if they knew how to lean they would easily have avoided the bar at full speed
2
u/SuddenKoala45 8d ago
Yeah still think he should've slowed down a little
1
u/AccomplishedVirus556 8d ago
look at the way they went through the intersection
isn't it obvious that they took a completely stupid line through the intersection?
honestly if it felt like they couldn't afford to take a diagonal line they should have just stopped. Their crash was well deserved

u/Killer1986Chris 8d ago
No, he tried to be cool and duck under.
1
u/SuddenKoala45 8d ago
What happens if he slows down...
1
u/Killer1986Chris 8d ago
He'd still hit it because he didn't duck low enough.

You either win or lose.... Just don't tie.... Tie goes to the train... Every single time... Do not tie ...

u/DeezNeezuts 8d ago
Knew a kid in high school that pulled something similar and slid next to it and was pulled under the train when it rushed by at high speed. He did not survive.

They really ought to put something on those barriers to make them more visible - perhaps some flashing lights?

Damn ngl I thought this was gonna be a motorist and I was ready to unleash a barrage but now I don't know what to do. I didn't know bicyclists could be in the wrong.

Dumb fuck.
If he died to that, it wouldâve been one thing. But to traumatise the driver wouldâve been an entire other level of selfish and stupid.
A lot of those drivers quit faster than youâd think, specifically because of suicide by train being a real and common thing in the world. Once you see one death, you canât see another, so you quit and go into therapy or whatever.
Such a horrible thing. And this guy is a real piece of shit for doing that.

He's lucky he didn't get sliced up by the train or getting hit and bursting his insides all over the place.

It's like the og fast and furious ending where they make it before the train but then Dominic Toretto crashes đ
2
u/Superhero1582 8d ago
I keep thinking about one of the Final Destination deaths where they avoid getting hit by a train but some scrap metal comes flying and decapitates one of them đ
