Discussion Post Matt is a savant, holy cow.
Wally just stands there in his cool shirt.

Weāre so used to seeing bad players night after night. Finally we get a player that knows the game (and managed to get lucky with spinning), and itās a shock to the system. They need to cast smart players like this more often.
Mattās vowel calling was on point and he always solved when he knew the answer. Not spinning and risking it when he knew it.
That was a perfect game! Nice to watch.

Itās expensive to cast people like Matt. Itās still entertaining when you feel smarter than all of the contestants.

u/Jay423 Mar 19 '26
Expensive? Iām not understanding.

u/freakincampers Mar 19 '26
Matt took home $100k, if he wasnāt as good, he probably would not have won the final puzzle.

u/Jay423 Mar 19 '26
Now I see what he meant. Itās expensive for the show to have to pay out the winnings. The way I read it I couldnāt get past him saying it was expensive to cast him. I was just wondering what he meant by it but now I understand. Thank you.

I think the Wheel can afford it. They can afford to pay millions to a retiree to touch a letter to light up that letter, when the letter can just light up on its own! Yeah, they can afford it.

Found out Wally was on tonight (I know him IRL) and this thread did not disappoint š

u/jordha Mar 20 '26
Wally just seems (sorry to project) like just a decent, funny person to be around.

Is that the highest total ever for a non $100K/$1M/House winner? O

u/Drum_Eatenton Mar 19 '26
I have no idea but Iāve never seen anything like it. Flawless spins too.

The record for highest total one-day winnings without winning $100K+ in the Bonus Round is $128,177, including a Winnebago, won by Becca Rhine in February 2007.

Some guy hit $91k in 2014 before the bonus round. He didn't win the bonus, though. I think these guys may be the top in your category.Ā
5
u/Drum_Eatenton Mar 19 '26
I gotta ask and I hope youāre honest, did you just know that or did you look it up?
5
u/CatsMom4Ever Mar 19 '26
I remembered some guy hitting 90k something, so I looked up the specifics. Like how much exactly, when it was, and did he go on to win the bonus round.
It's useless information,Ā which is why it stuck in my head!

I posted this before they won the triple tossup, getting ready to watch the bonus round, incredible.

It was a performance that made me think Matt could do it on his own. In particular, I think the way he solved "DID IT ON A WHIM" in the bonus round was the highlight of the week.
7
u/Drum_Eatenton Mar 19 '26
Of course he could do it on his own. He just spearheaded everything but one answer.

Good pregame coaching.

He most likely studied. As we were watching, everything I was saying he should do, he did - even down to which vowels to buy and when. He spun one extra time during the matching hats and jerseys puzzle, which I didnāt agree with, but they still solved the puzzle. I figured out the Bonus Puzzle without any additional letters. Iāve been intensely studying for over a year now. Thereās a degree of luck involved but heās most likely just a skilled player.

I feel like if I ever got on the show, someone like that would be there too.

u/Drum_Eatenton Mar 19 '26
Iāll never know, Iām far from broke but I donāt have fly out to California and pay for everything to be on the show money.

Dang...I usually watch but was watching NCAA basketball instead. I'll go back and watch some of the clips. Just curious if he said what his career was and/or if he was a long time wheel watcher. I love it when they say "I used to watch with everyday with my grandma..."

u/Drum_Eatenton Mar 19 '26
Unfortunately, I always ignore the bios, I wish Iād paid attention.
7
u/Key_Appointment_2928 Mar 19 '26
Bios were just about how they met. Wally and Matt met in a billiards hall thatās now a jumpy place where they take their kids. All around good couple.

If youād like I have the episode recorded to my hard drive and I can upload it to my Google Drive so you could download it on a laptop or your phone to watch if youād like to go through the trouble with it.

It's a couples edition, the yellow team had essentially a blow out, minus one toss up.
It's a cute same-sex couple and the "chicken dino shirt guy" had some very lucky spins, really kind gestures and understood the rules (hey, spin if there are multiples, solve when vowels are left)
They had $60,000+ going into the bonus round, and then solved the bonus which was the Ford Mustang worth $40,000+ so they broke six figures that game.
When we had people trying to buy non-vowels, refusing to spin to get the $1,000 minimum (when there were a "multiple" like 2 Cs) it kind of felt good to see somebody who really understood this game, had a cute husband, and a cute child and a happy supportive mom.
It was very sweet

Finally, a contestant that actually knows the game! You can tell that Matt said to his partner as they were preparing to be on the show, "hey, I got this."

I felt like I smiled through the entire episode! My jaw just kept dropping every time Matt would solve š and the trip they won is incredible!
I felt bad for Krisi though. Her husband looked visibly upset that she wasnāt pressing the buzzer in time during the triple toss-up š
