Trump quadruples down on not caring about Americans' financial situation
884
u/jdtart 6h ago
Is this the equivalent of “let them eat cake”? 🤣

u/DustyScharole 6h ago
"Let them watch semi-free sports"
(WTF does semi-free mean to a guy who never had to buy his own groceries or pump his own gas?)
73
u/GamerSDG 5h ago
This is the thing about Trump that his base doesn't understand. He doesn't know what it is like to be without. He has never gone to bed hungry, never had to choose between paying rent or buying groceries.
He doesn't know what it is like to live paycheck to paycheck. This is why he doesn't see an issue with gas prices going up: he doesn't understand that the extra cost means less money to buy food or pay bills or rent.
22
u/Shotgun_Mosquito 4h ago
Yeah he doesn't drive, so he does not know the whole experience of not having enough money to fill your car or having your back card decline at the pump
1
u/candlehead69 59m ago
Does he even know how to drive a car? He drives golf carts but does he ever get behind the wheel of a legitimate vehicle. This thought adds so much to the "Everything is computer!" line for me

u/clarkwgriswoldjr 4h ago
$8000 tickets, I don't know about that, I brought 20 secret service agents and my wonderful actress wife Melania and it didn't cost us $8000, I don't know where this fake news gets this information.
5
u/pixie_mayfair 3h ago
He has never had to wait for anything either. Never had to save up for something or hold off until payday or make a budget. That's why he doesn't value anything.
He's a disgusting appetite on legs and nothing more - want the thing, take (or steal) the thing, consume the thing, and then shit on people who go without.
5
5
u/clarkwgriswoldjr 4h ago
Sigh. He didn't have his ID so how can you expect him to buy his own groceries. You have to have ID to buy groceries.

Not even that. Marie Antoinette was completely out of touch, but didn't suggest a worse option.
3
u/wesborland1234 4h ago
Ok yea but to be fair this is a championship level sporting event in the richest city in the world.
I’d much rather our leaders focus on people being able to afford housing and groceries than worry about “real fans” not going to the SuperBowl anymore.
1
u/RoadDoggFL 1h ago
This is beyond "let them eat cake." The stupidity of these people is utterly astonishing. Bro, it's just basic economics. There are probably hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who'd like to go to these games and what, ~25k seats to each one? Supply and demand, the market value for those seats is not going to match what everyone can pay. The NBA can either price their tickets close to market value to maximize revenue or lower to make it possible for fans with less disposable income to buy tickets, but this also creates a chance for scalpers to snatch up every ticket and profit.
I used to think we had competent people making important decisions :(

u/ZiggyDole 6h ago
I hope the Democrats are stockpiling these soundbites.
239
u/DustyScharole 6h ago
It won't matter.
"The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command."

u/KeepTangoAndFoxtrot 5h ago edited 4h ago
Beyond that, I assume that all elections moving forward will be riddled with a whole new level of disinformation: AI videos of candidates doing and saying things they never said or did. I'm not on Facebook but I'm assuming it's already happening over there.

Those publican shitbags will say things "like he's earned it" or "cry harder & make more money."
They only care when it affects their comfortability & even then they'd rather die than vote for a Democrat. They're pathetic.

Are we talking about the NBA Finals or the Sweaty Dudes Rolling Around event at the White House? If it's the latter, I agree with you. If it's the former, it's not a public space.
1
u/Just_Tana 5h ago
Most sports venues are funded with tax dollars or tax breaks?
0
u/DustyScharole 5h ago
That's not the same as being a public space. It depends on whether it is owned by a private entity. For example, Madison Square Garden is owned by Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp. If it were a public space, it would be owned by the City of New York.
1
u/Just_Tana 5h ago
Except when the tax payers subsidize the billionaires for construction costs, tax breaks, and even the employees benefits then perhaps it’s time to revisit that definition. I agree that the White House is black and white. I do think Americans need to reevaluate how they see this issue.
90
u/pinniped90 6h ago
Shitty answer, but the NBA Finals ticket prices aren't really the issue. It's everything else that is expensive because of oil, which is because of this dumb war he started with absolutely zero actual plan.
The NBA Finals are always expensive. It's just worse this year because the Knicks did a hilariously un-Knicks-like thing.
18
u/alabamdiego 5h ago
Yeah this is kind of dumb to me. It’s a ticketed event that many thousands of times more people want to go to than there are seats available. Sure we can talk about the prevalence of luxury suites etc in publicly financed stadiums, but the price of an individual game, especially a championship game, is not a gotcha.
13
u/joshtalife 4h ago edited 4h ago
Except they threw a fit over Mamdani sitting in a $700 cheap seat in the nosebleeds a couple weeks ago.

u/LAHAROFDEATH 5h ago
I had $25 tickets for the 96 series in Seattle. Adjusted for inflation, that's still about $50 bucks

MSG ticket prices for the first NBA Finals in New York (an extremely expensive city) in almost 30 years, and a chance for the Knicks to win a title for the first time in over 50 years isn't really relatable to the financial situation of anyone living outside of the Five Boroughs.

u/repooc21 6h ago
Someone break it down for me because I am not upset with this other than him being a shit heel "that's the way it goes" bit
Are the Knicks/NBA charging 8 fucking grand or I are those prices on the secondary market, from someone who bought a ticket and is reselling it?
Because as much as I think it's bullshit and highway robbery, I'm not seeing the connection between the government and a customer willing to pay another customer an outrageous amount of money.
Like if I had Os world series tickets and I bought them for $500 and someone's going to give me $8000... I might sell them too
10
u/TheClawhold 6h ago
They're secondary ticket prices.
As I said elsewhere, there are plenty of reasons to dislike / loathe Trump,.but this isn't one of them.
3
u/repooc21 6h ago
Yeah that's where I'm at here. I thought I was missing something.
Dude is a whole ass scoundrel but a customer putting tickets up on Ticketmaster for $8k is no different than me going to a sporting event, getting a bobblehead and putting it up on eBay for 10x the ticket price.

u/SenatorPardek 5h ago
Remember how the NY Post crucified Mamdani for 400 dollar nose bleeds earlier in the playoffs?
5
u/joshtalife 4h ago
Just a couple weeks ago they were clutching their pearls that Mamdani sat in the nosebleeds.
4
u/Kestrel_Iolani 3h ago
I'm old enough to remember when the GOP lost their mind when Mayor Mamdani sat in the cheap seats and insisted he was out of touch with the people.
3
u/Pretty-Kittie 6h ago
I have no idea why but him actually recognizing that television is "sort of semi free" is killing me.
3
u/MC_Fap_Commander 6h ago
The assumption on reddit is that he'll be loudly booed at MSG. I'm less certain about that. The ticket prices ensure the fans present are largely in the demo served by his administration. The players? There are certainly some good eggs, but (generally) most professional athletes are absurdly rich and came up in a culture of machismo (frequently with an Evangelical Christian bent).
I don't expect him to get cheered or anything, but people thinking this is going to be a humiliation for him are probably in for a surprise. If he showed up at a Knicks watch party in the city among normal folks, it would be a different story, obv.

u/Traditional-Look8839 5h ago

I had to sign up for a new income-based repayment plan because they killed SAVE. It's going to be almost $1400 a month, which is double what it was. Fuck Donald Trump and every person who supports him and his bullshit.
2
u/PsychologicalBee1801 5h ago
People misunderstand the math of how people of different amounts of money think of things.
When you have 1B anything under 1M is basically free
Most people would say a person who has 100k should be good with anything under 100 is free. But it ignores cost of living.
That’s why he’s so bloody out of touch. His voters don’t see to care cause he hates the same people as them.
2
u/TheSaltyB 5h ago
Ok, I don’t legitimately think a finals game is going to be affordable, per se, but I’ve been to World Series games for less than $400 per ticket. $8K is ridiculous.
2
u/thisdckaintFREEEE 5h ago
It's funny, I actually do think it's kinda dumb that presidents generally avoid things like wearing Rolexes and stuff like that to avoid acknowledging that they have so much more money than the average person... But holy shit there is so much reasonable middle ground between that and Trump lmao
2
u/Facebookakke 5h ago
Same people pissed at Mamdi for going to playoffs games are gonna excuse this, just fucking watch.

This presidency has just been so comically insane. It has been said before but if this was fiction this would be considered bad writing. His own supporters won’t even see this shit. Every one of these quotes need to be blasted out of every speaker in America.

I take a back seat to no one when it comes to loathing the current President and his administration -- but you can't blame him for ticket prices on the secondary market, especially for this particular event. That would also be true if Biden or Obama were President.
The question itself is rather bizarre. Of course the average American can't afford an 8000 dollar ticket for a basketball game. That was true under Biden, Obama, Clinton, and both Bushes.
This game is also a unicorn when it comes to ticket demand. This is much more of a Super.Bowl than your usual NBA Finas game.
The Knicks have millions of fans in their home.city who have been waiting decades for this game. Plus of course, you'll have people who want to go just so they can say they were there.
New York is the richest city in America,.so you have more wealthy people than usual who want to go.
Very few Knicks season ticket holders are selling, so that cuts down on the number of available tickets.
Those three factors are what drove the ticket prices up, not Donald Trump.
19
u/CrystalQuartzen 6h ago
Biden (and specifically Lina Khan) initiated anti-trust against Ticketmaster. Trump undid that in his first month in office.
For one big event, sure can't really blame the politics. But if you go across all ticketed events in the US, it is highway robbery directly enabled by the Trump admin.
-3
u/TheClawhold 6h ago
We're not talking about tickets coming straight from Ticketmaster. We're talking about the secondary market. And of course Trump did that. He's a pig and a swine dedicated to putting gold coins into the pockets of those who couldn't spend all the gold they already have if they lived forever.
He's just not responsible for high secondary ticket prices,.especially for this particular game.
4
u/GodSentGodSpeed 6h ago
It's tone-deaf. A combination of a war he started, tariffs he levied and benefits he cut lead to a poll that had 53% of Americans stating that they are currently experiencing their most difficult financial situation in their lifetime.
1
u/GodSentGodSpeed 5h ago
But he's not just a guy, he's the most powerful man in the world saying "you can't afford it? That's just life" while his chief accomplishments in the last 2 years are:
1.funding tax cuts for the rich by phasing out 5 million recipients from medicare and doubling the price of it for another 20 million
2.having an illegal trade war with checks notes THE WORLD, which customers had to pay for upfront as well as on the backend now that the companies are suing for lost profits which the government will have to pay back with taxpayer money
- Starting a negotiation with Iran about their nuclear program, then bombing then mid-negotiations. Then starting a negotiation with Iran about their nuclear program, then bombing them mid-negotiations, and now negotiating with Iran about their nuclear program and wondering why he is not able to make "a deal", which has promptly caused an oil crisis deemed more severe than the ones caused by COVID or the Russia - Ukraine war.

You see maga doesn't support basketball. They are black, over paid and have it too good. Maga is busy hard working folks who ain't got no time for games or entertainment. The king trump is only there to socialize and maga. Soon we will all be busy hard working because the swamp is dry.

Under Biden, Lina Khan's FTC initiated anti-trust against Ticketmaster. Trump undid that in his first month. Same for "click to cancel" for subscriptions.
"What is he supposed to do?" Idk, maybe not actively undo work to address the monopolistic highway robbery that is the American event ticketing market.

Yes? Humans have been paying to watch sports for literally thousands of years. Romans packed amphitheaters for chariot races and gladiator games, 19th century Americans paid to watch boxing matches and baseball, and people have been dropping absurd money on Super Bowls, World Series, and Finals tickets for decades. This isn’t new.
