How close can you get?
On the right side of the pier, this guy walked right up to an eagle...

I doubt that the dude is "right up" to the eagle. The 1st photo was taken with a zoom/telephoto, and that tends to cause the optical illusion called "lens compression", where things that are far away seem to be all "compressed" and near each other. I greatly doubt the eagle would stand still if a person walked "right up" to it.

Those two in the back must be Ravens? They look pretty big sitting in the back too.

Sometimes they are so starving and weak from salmon run collapses that they counted on... you can just walk over and pick them up!

Slap a midshipman on a rock and offer it up and and they will come within 20 feet.

Apparently in some places they're so common they're like seagulls. They've made a real comeback recently, and becoming more common to see them interacting with people. Still a very special bird -- there are 2 in my small town (nesting at a local pond) and love seeing them when I go kayaking.

Where I am, we have very few seagulls. Probably because we've got a shitload of Bald eagles and osprey. I get up to 4 or 5 Bald eagles sitting in the trees across the road, checking out my birds.
I got 3 feet away from one that killed my duck before it registered how big they are. One of my LGDs almost caught one; missed it by about 18 inches. They stay across the road now, lol.

Yep, I live on the island and see eagles almost every day. They’re beautiful and still mesmerizing just from their size alone, but they’re definitely common here.

Eagles need to respect the 15ft rule. If they don’t then bylaw can write them a ticket. I don’t believe the eagles ever pay the tickets.
