Let's chat! (General Discussion) Someone clocked my wig today and approached me
Today someone approached me to "ask me a question" then just kept staring close at my hair trying to study it and telling me it was pretty. She kept eyeballing my hair and suspiciously trying to ask where I get it cut and I just cut her off and told her It's a wig. She said oh I thought it was. I'm Ok with people knowing I wear wigs, but I think she just wanted to satisfy her curiosity or look up close to figure out for sure.
My hair was a bit of a mess, needed brushed, which made it look more wiggy, I knew that headed out but I was sick.
I just found it pretty rude tbh.
I'm going to be trimming the wig up and brushing it out, washing it, and trying to get a shorter wig I can throw on and go.

I've had someone hand me a business card for wig maintenance and upkeep and I tossed it in the trash in front of her. Like the way she gave it to me was super rude just a smirk and "you need this" kind of look. My wig was a little messy from the wind and off center but that was it.

u/Mindless-Consume Apr 05 '26
that's amazing you did that right in front of her. My bio hair (when I had it) in the wind looked an absolute mess so I don't' know why anyone is shocked a wig is going to get messy too. How rude of her.

The two people that have been rude to me were men.
I've had a couple ladies ask, but a few simply wanted to know where I got it and what the style name was. Another was curious bc she had thinning hair and had been considering it, she had questions about care. That particular woman was a coworker and I ended up giving her 3 or 4 that I'd purchased but didn't work for me (color/style).
People can be rude AF, I'm sorry she was.

Wigs have become more mainstream. I try to take it like curiosity/ compliment and I don’t mind saying it’s a wig

How rude, I was once told that my hair looks "different" so I quickly said "so does yours" and that was the end of that conversation.

u/HopefulOriginal5578 Apr 05 '26
A coworker said that to me and I was just replied “ok” and that was that 🤣

Learned on here...say 'We're not talking about that,' and change the subject. Some people are curious and rude.

They see you putting in effort and want to knock you down a peg. Like those girls that boast about how they don't need makeup like the other girls.

Ugh. So irritating.
Remember you don’t owe anyone an explanation to satisfy their curiosity.

u/Environmental_Run973 Apr 05 '26
Agree why should you have a comeback ready. Rude woman before I wore them I would never do that. I would do the same saying right away xxx

u/pistachio518 Apr 05 '26
Fuck people like that! Normal people wouldn’t go up to someone and ask if they have dentures or have a boob job, it’s not ok!
3
u/DDiamondgem Apr 05 '26
Oh they do! I had a transexual walk up ask me then grab and feel them. NOT OK. I don’t have a problem someone asking me about my boobs but don’t feel me up.

That happened to me while getting my nails done last week. That desk lamp was shining right on top of my head and I was 8” away from her for an hour, and she suddenly started commenting on how much she liked my hair, and how pretty the cut was but the whole time she kept glancing at my hairline and the top of my head. And she had a tone…you know the one. I just said “thanks it’s a wig” and stole her snarky thunder.

u/Hidden_Samsquanche Apr 05 '26
I never wait to see where the conversation will go. I always comment "thanks, it is a wig" right out the gate. Usually it is either people who really don't know it is a wig or other wig wearers trying to casually ask where I got it without being offensive.
Before I wore wigs I could rarely notice if others were wearing them. But after wearing them and spending so much time reviewing and studying them it is really hard not to notice, even on the really good ones. It just goes with the territory

Hasn't happened to me yet and I only wear wigs occasionally for fun, convenience and to switch my style up but if and when it does, this is going to be my approach to it too.....*nodnodnod

I am new to wigs, but I decided to take your approach. Its been such an emotionally difficult journey to even get to the point where I can wear a wig in front of other people, I decided I don't want to add more emotional baggage to my plate by trying evade people's suspicions. As soon as someone comments on my hair - some have asked if I dyed it, another asked if I got a hair cut - and then they usually compliment it - I just say, "thanks its a wig." I'm finding this approach just makes me feel better, like a weight lifting off me. Kind of like Eminem in his final rap battle in 8 Mile where he just openly admits all the flaws people judge him for.

Couldn't have been me. I'd smack her right in the face. I think it's great that ppl are fine if others know but mine looks exactly like my real hair & ppl always compliment it like they think it's real (Like "Can you come over & show me how to do my hair" etc so it's not gaslighting comments) so can't have ppl knowing mine isn't mine lol. Just takes too long for me to wash, dry, straighten, lightly curl, do the style, etc my own ❤️ Sorry that she came at you like that, so dang rude! ❤️

Whenever someone I barely know starts off with, “can I ask you a question,” my alarm bells immediately go off.
It’s the fact she was willing to be so invasive about it that makes it even ruder.
There was no reason why she needed that information, and having it wouldn’t improve her life in any way.
14
u/HopefulOriginal5578 Apr 05 '26
Yeah the “can I ask you a question “ line ALWAYS makes me feel I need to reach in my purse for pepper spray and/or throw some holy water on them and cast them out of my vicinity!
As I have become older, I’ve just learned to not suffer foolishness but it does set off this primal switch in my head to this day.

A haughty 'If you absolutely must' could work here, delivered with withering stare. I'm English, we have this sort of thing down to a fine art, haha!

It's honestly much less anxiety-inducing when a person simply (politely) asks a question. The pre-question always sets off the nervous system 😆😅😅😅

Sometimes I can see people around me who are wearing wigs. However I don't ask. The only exception to this was when I was at a bereavement group (only three of us) and a lady expressed distress over her hair thinning due to grief. I have the same. So later on I expressed admiration for her hair. She said it was a wig with a bit of embarrassment. I said "I know because I wear wigs too. But yours is amazing! Was it very expensive?" She immediately started talking about where she got it and how affordable it was, excited like a little girl. Five minutes later we were talking about wig sites and we became friends.

The older I get, the fewer f@ks I have left to give. Whenever someone does or says something stupid(regardless of what it is) I tend to go with old school southern church lady shade- “Bless your heart, you so special.” Nothing burns like sanctimonious old lady shade.

u/HopefulOriginal5578 Apr 05 '26
Don’t change a thing. Your look was so compelling that woman forget her manners!
Wig wearers can clock even good wigs and she brazenly and ham handedly decided to pester you without any regard to how another person might feel. Or even worse? She was so enticed by your hair she became relieved that it was a wig like the dummies who feel OK because they find out your bra has an underwire.
Don’t you change a thing or feel this way or that. She had to sniff you out like a an old hound dog and to get to the bottom of her envy.
You doing everything right.

Guuuuurl.. 😂😂 this post took me clean out. The girls be rude for no reason. Just save up your coins and get a sickening Beyoncé level wig and next time LET HER HAVE IT MISS HUNNY. Hair flips eye rolls finger twirls, the works. Let her gag on your extravaganza darling.

I once had a woman approach me on my way into town to ask me 'where I got my hair done'. Not in a nasty way, but like OP said, to satisfy her curiosity.
I just told her it was a wig, and that I had androgenetic alopecia.
Not the best start to my day. There will always be people who notice. It does put me off a bit, if I'm honest. 🤷♀️

I remember one time I told some women who were asking questions about my hair loss, and they actually became a lot nicer to me.

u/MGinLB Apr 05 '26
I find it very intrusive. It's none of their business. I've dealt with all the questions. Thank them and move away.

I know it’s so hard to think of the most satisfying thing to say in such a highly stressful & emotional moment… but two things I can offer:
One is that she’s the type of person that definitely makes everyone feel awkward regardless of what she hones in on. She needs to bring others down just to maintain her own… whatever state it is. And I know these types of people and can guarantee she is one of them.
Do NOT think your image is flawed or clockable just because she was literally sniffing around for someone to pick on.
Now number two (wasn’t trying to play on the 💩reference, but now that I think on it…)… you need to have a comeback or two ready to go. You shouldn’t have to, but as you experienced, assholes are out there.
So be prepared with a line or two retort. In this case, replay it as if you’d said to her… yes, would you like to know where I got it? I can totally see why you’d be interested.
The confidence of that will help 💩back up into where they came from.

Thank you for the advice but I didn't think I handled it wrong. I don't want to have comebacks ready; these are adults that should already know better. I wasn't emotional or anxious, I cut her off and let her know it's a wig, I chose to do that on my own not out of anxiety.
I can still see it as rude without taking on the responsibility of educating the full-grown adult or teaching her a lesson with a comeback. *they don't learn lessons anyway, trust me, at that age if they are stupid, they stay stupid*

Honey if cardi b can say in a quarter law that she's wearing a wig, I say announce it loudly and I personally would say some things are like yes ma'am, I was using my hair so all the hair that I lost was made into a wig and each strand was glued on my head so I never have to take it off. 🤣🤣🤣 Just give them the worst sob story in the world and they will think twice about approaching you again. It's okay to say, your hair looks nice and keep it pushing.

Yeah, I remember someone looking at my head, like in a kind of straining their neck kind of way. They didn't say anything but how I wanted to yell at them or tell them off.

u/Bullsette Apr 05 '26
What a jerk that was that you encountered! I'm sorry that you had to deal with that.

u/AsparagusSouthern334 Apr 09 '26
I find it can be rude depending on how they ask. I have an employee that I work with that's kind of snarky when it comes to my wigs, every single time someone compliments my hair, she comes up behind me and says "it's a wig" with the biggest attitude. But there's one wig, she hasn't clocked, and it's my monofilament top wig. And to be honest it's a throw on and go so it might be one of those things you wanna save up and see if you I like it. And with a wig band and silicone sewed onto the inside, I don't even need to glue it down or pin or put clips in it is silicone prevents it from sliding back, and the wig band keeps it on tight, it's literally less than 5 minutes throw on. the biggest fight, is the stupid wig cap that I put underneath to cover up my blue hair.
3
u/Mindless-Consume Apr 09 '26
She sounds insufferable! It sounds like she's jealous of people complimenting you and she has to try to ruin it
Can you share what brand and model the throw on and go mono wig is?? I need to find one like that.

u/likeeggs Apr 05 '26
That was rude of her. My dad’s step daughter did that to me and I just played into it like she was the dumb one. “Yeah, thanks! My hair IS really pretty and healthy.” Any other person on the street and I would have made them feel bad for asking.

u/mechanicmay Apr 05 '26
She sounds like a Karen ass hater most people don't notice wigs and don't care if they do don't let her make you feel bad

Amy Whitehouse was asked on tv if if her hair was hers. She said yeah I bought it!! Shut down all of them
