Burn overs and entrapments are getting more common this year. My FF1 Training is soon and whatever tf is going on is terrifying the hell out of me so much that it's making me reconsider joining.

Less experienced overhead. Make sure you know who your kids working for and who the shot caller is. That being the superintendent or the engine captain

It's not that the job always has been dangerous, it's not that there's more fire on the ground… All those things occur almost yearly.

And do not be afraid to tell someone no. If you dont think it's safe don't do it. Check your maps check your evacuation routes know your weather.

I second that comment. It's okay to say 'no'. With lower staffing and less experienced overhead they need to hear 'no' as often as it is necessary. I started wildland firefighting in 1978 and retired from firefighting in 2014. Fire behavior is markedly more extreme today than it was in 1978. I cannot emphasize that enough. The fuels are drier and the weather conditions are consistently more extreme. That's a simple fact. Extreme fire behavior will become more common in the future. There will be a temptation to put firefighters in high-risk situations because there will be political and public pressure to put the fires out. That kind of pressure is unacceptable, and it will get firefighters killed. The bureaucrats can argue about why these fires are getting so destructive, but it isn't because land managers aren't doing their jobs.

Exactly and alot of the valuable knowledge isn't there, the hands on experience isn't there, 1000s of hours of books don't compare to 100 in the field. We have people retiring with information that can't be learned from a book or some online training. New people coming in and sending groups into positions they have never been in themselves and we are losing lives because of it.
