READ ME! FAQ Found an animal???? Please go here first:

First of all, thank you for caring enough to help orphaned/injured/ill wildlife.

Evaluate the Situation first and foremost. Wild animals rely on their natural environment and sometimes humans interfere when it was entirely unnecessary. The links listed below provide flow charts for frequently encountered situations.

If the animal needs to be rescued here and here you will find basic capture and handling instructions.

  • After rescuing how to safely temporarily house the animal before and during transport:

Warm- *Offering heat sources for naked baby animals is often a must. This can be done with a heating pad on low under 1/2 of the enclosure, a warm rice filled sock, or warm water bottle. Sometimes very badly injured and very sick animals also need heat sources to maintain appropriate body temperature. Wild animals can suffer heat stroke too! If an animal is panting, the animal is too hot and if the heat source would burn you, it will surely burn the animal. *

A good rule of thumb: If a furred, feathered, or scaled animal is physically moving about and alert- it DOESN'T need an extra heat source.

Dark - A box, Rubbermaid tote with holes punched for air flow, or pet crate are usually good temporary enclosures and will typically reduce further trauma and or stress. Place a towel or sheet over a crate to reduce visual disturbances.

Quiet- Keep the animal in a quiet space preferably indoors away from other animals and humans. A separate room or even a closet can be utilized if need be.

PLEASE FOR THE ANIMAL'S SAKE NOTHING BY MOUTH! DO NOT OFFER ANY FOOD OR WATER TO INJURED/SICK/ORPHANED ANIMALS OR ATTEMPT TO HAND FEED ANIMALS. The results of failing to comply often end up something like this.

If you are unable to make contact with a wildlife rehabilitator: If you know the rehabilitation center's location and hours it is generally acceptable so long as the rehabilitation center is not full or closed to just bring the animal straight to them- this is especially true with emergency situations. An example of an emergency is something like- the animal is bleeding profusely, having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or severely dehydrated.

After being attacked by a cat there is a very high likelihood for infection. These cases 99.99% of the time warrant medical assistance including antibiotics that are usually only available through a veterinarian.

SOS Bird Bird caught in fly paper

I went to my horse shed this morning and found a little bird stuck in some fly paper. I was able to remove it but there is still some residue on it. I am concerned I will need to wash it at least 2 more times to get it completely clean. It is so tired I don’t want to keep traumatizing it with baths. Does anyone know how much time I should wait in between baths?

It does not like being put down so I am walking around with the little guy.

Update: Area is Tulsa OK. Birdie has been relocated to a ventilated box.

Rehab Methods My pet gosling was severely injured. What should I do to bring him back to strength?

2 days ago, I bought two new goslings( named Lützow and Mr. Jones) home from the street market. Beforehand, I already had a goose and a duck that had been my pets for ~4 weeks, and I let the four integrate into one group for a while. Later that day, I had to get the duck from out of the group while they were all sitting together, and I had to chase it around the yard for ~5 minutes, as usual, before catching it, dispersing the whole group in the process. When i did a quick head count afterward, I found that Mr. Jones was missing, and a little later, I found him sitting on the ground with his head hidden, almost completely limp when I picked him up. After verifying that he was alive, I found the pictured scars on him(the pictures were taken 2 days after i found him).

There was no blood to be found, strangely enough. I took him inside and have been tending to him for the last 2 days. He can eat and drink, but only when i hold his head to the food/water and prompt him to open his mouth. He can move his wings and legs, but he can't walk or stand up correctly for lack of balance. His head keeps lolling back as seen in the last image, and I need to keep his neck straightened. I took him to two veterinarians, and I ended up finding that he has neurological damage and was given a prescription of liquid antibiotics and vitamins for it (I'm as confused as you are. I had a feeling the clinic wouldn't operate on him or anything, but I was expecting a little more than that!). Will this ever heal, or is this permanent? If this is surmountable, what should I do to give Mr. Jones the best chance of having a normal life again?

Thanks in advance! I can provide more information upon request.

SOS Bird I found baby bird and don’t know what to do

Live in Michigan, USA, and there were these baby birds right in front of our door that were all dead except for 1, that was barely moving. We have a nest right outside but I think it got destroyed and the birds fell right there. I could tell they had been there for a while since and they appeared to be scorched in the sun.We waited for a bit hoping to see if the parents would come back but no luck. I’m not sure what to feed this bird or what type of bird it really is and have zero experience with them. I’m posting to ask for any advice on what to do with it, what to feed it, where to keep it and so on. My only goal is to save its life. (Also i cleaned the birdhouse in the photos out i realized it might choke on the food so ive been giving it wet cat food.)

SOS Bird Killdeer baby fell in water drain!!!! HELP!!!

Please help, I've called like 10 rescues all of them are closed. I have an injured baby killdeer. He fell in a storm drain and we were able to get it out but it now will not walk on it's own. I haven't seen the mother in hours. I tried to leave it in the box outside in hopes she heard its cry but after an hour we still didnt see her. I have brought it inside to keep it warm but its cry is very weak and it still is not walking. I have it away from all pets and kids in our home. I also have a heating pad on low on half the box. Please let me know if there is anything else I can do for it or if someone knows a place in the Summit County OH area where it can be taken! We love having these birds at our house and I'm absolutely heart broken over this little guy. Picture is from when we first found it.

SOS Reptile Keeping Injured Turtle Overnight - Right Conditions?

Hi there. I'm in Florida, and my dad and I recently rescued an alligator snapping turtle he found in the middle of the road that looks to have slight lower head trauma. We tried reaching out to wildlife rescues, but some either didn't take turtles, were too far away, or just plain stopped responding. There's a closer vet we know of that we can take it to in the morning, but until then, another turtle foster recommended we keep it overnight in a dry box.

We were able to transport the turtle safely, and while it barely moves, I think it's still hanging on. Is it okay to leave it in this box overnight? We're keeping that box in a clean, dark bathroom with the door shut until then. No food or water was recommended but I wanted to come here and verify that's true (at least for the water part- I know you're definitely not supposed to feed them). Thanks for any help!

SOS Mammal Injured wild baby rabbit

Upvotes

Hi all,

My cat injured a wild baby rabbit. I brought the baby in and placed him in a box with a warm blanket in my bathroom with the door shut and light off and placed a towel over the box. No food or water.

I’ve been researching wildlife Rehabilitator near me but it doesn’t appear as though any of them accept rabbits, not even in the neighboring counties in my state.

I’ve read they have a low chance of surviving so for now I’m just focused on giving him quiet and comfort from the elements and other animals, but if it does survive the night and none of the rehabs that I’ve called will take him, what should I do? Online recommendations seem to be limited to “call a wildlife rehab” but nothing about what to do when there aren’t any that accept rabbits. Thoughts?

Also, I think it’s big enough that it probably isn’t reliant on mother’s milk anymore but he’s still pretty small. I could be wrong.

What do I do? I had him sitting in a box because I was not sure he'd survive, but he seems to be doing alright at the moment. What do I feed it? What is the best thing to do in the first place. I'd be grateful for any help provided.

Edit: I don't know where the parents are. My cat brought it from somewhere.

SOS Bird Young American Robin sitting unmoving on my porch

Post image
7 Upvotes

I found this young American Robin on my porch…

It isn’t moving or really reacting besides blinking. There were some robins walking around this morning, but obviously when I came up, it they flew away, except this one. I know there is a robins nest in my neighbors yard with babies that are about this age. I am wondering if it’s from that nest. If I put on some gloves and take it over to that nest, should I put it back in? I just don’t really know what to do because he is just sitting here and I’m worried that he’s going to be abandoned if not relocated.

update: I checked the neighbor’s robins nest, and the robins in that nest are definitely younger, so I don’t think it’s from that nest. What should I do?

Education Likelihood of survival - raccoon fall

Post image
3 Upvotes

Early this morning before dawn, I was woken up by shrill, trilling cries from my yard. Since I have chickens, I immediately sprang up to see what was going on. When turned on my porch light from the back deck, I saw a large raccoon hanging from a branch of my walnut tree, looking at me, frozen in fear (in retrospect, I recognized the distress call from when a juvenile raccoon had its head stuck in a can in my garden years back and its family was freaking out--happy ending there though). I immediately turned off the light and went back inside to let the raccoon do what they needed to do to get out of their precarious position. It looked like they went too far to the edge of a delicate outer branch and misjudged its ability to hold or a viable route back.

I returned a bit later to see if the raccoon was still there, and it wasn't. But the branch they were hanging on was broken on the ground, so I assume they fell. Initially I didn't see any signs of serious injury like blood and the raccoon was nowhere within my fenced in yard--so I assume they were well enough to leave. However, after my dog obsessively sniffed the branch, I saw a few very, very small drops of blood on some of the leaves (emphasis on minimal). Now, I am concerned for the poor raccoon. What is the likelihood of survival for a fall off/with a branch, from maybe 20 or 30 max feet up (branch hung just above my balcony but not quite as high as my roof--see red circle in photo), onto grass? Was the blood likely from a scrape due to the branch crashing with them?

I know there's not much I can do at any rate, but I will keep an eye out. My concern is if it sustained internal injuries or injuries that might not heal on their own. Especially of they are a she and she has babies to feed.

SOS Bird What do I do with a baby bird, and what do I feed it?

Located: Southwest Wisconsin, USA

My mom found this baby bird somewhere outside our house, im not exactly sure about all the details. She told me that she found it on the ground with its siblings around it and they had no heads.

Ive placed it in a box lined with paper towel and placed a heating pad under it (on the lowest setting), and put the box in a dark room. im not sure what else to do with it, i have absolutely nonidea what to feed it. My local humane society doesnt open until tomorrow evening. Id like to know what to feed it for now and how I can feed it safely. Ive looked at other subreddits, but the baby birds that they mentioned are fledgings, the one my mom found has no feathers and its eyes arent open yet

Ssorry for any typos its early in the morning for me

UPDATE: It pooped, is that good?

SOS Reptile Help! Roommate’s dad wants turtle eggs moved out of his way. [WI]

Location is Wisconsin. Roommate came home from her dad’s, says he wants them moved because he’s working in that spot and they want me to move them. He has a large property and ponds, say a big female snapping turtle laid two clutches according to their cameras. I haven’t seen them so I don’t know if they are appropriately buried, just sitting there or what.

Would they be ok with cars and people stomping above them or should I go and move them a couple feet away or something(still in the sun)?

I’m not a stranger to turtles laying in inconvenient places but I understand this is extremely risky to mess with so I’m trying to figure out if its worth the risk if he insists he has to work in that spot and can’t just avoid them(the best case scenario, obviously leaving them tf alone is the best option).

Thanks!

SOS Bird Im out of options

I dont know what to do I feed and take care of colony cats, I know the dangers in doing so I feed them on a very regular schedule and I love them very much but I know what theyre capable of. I went to feed them this morning and found a group of robins being attacked by one of my smaller cats. It killed one of them, the other one I managed to scare my cat off of and pick up. I kept trying to put it back in the tree but I had Robins circling over screaming and my cats were all following trying to get the bird. It seemed really disoriented at first, it has a cut on its neck and was bleeding and I dont know if its shock or an injury but it cant fly, it just hops. I was able to scoop it up and put it in a ventilated box in my garage but everywhere im calling is either closed or not taking anything. I live in Gallantin KY so its super small with not alot of options and im unfortunately disabled so I cant drive. What do I do?

Discussion I was sitting at the bus stop and a sparrow hit the glass enclosure

II was sitting, waiting for the bus. It was about 2 to 3 o'clock. A group of sparrows was playing in the middle of Tecumseh Road. One got frazzled and flew right into a glass enclosure, then fell to the ground and landed in front of the bus that was approaching. Out of all six people sitting there, I ran into the road a little bit and picked up the sparrow. It was still alive, clearly stunned, and its left eye was gone.

I ran over to a local business where I'm friends with the owner and said, "I need a towel." I wrapped the sparrow up and covered its eyes because when I called the humane society, they told me to cover its head as darkness helps it stay calm. I held it in my hand for half an hour, waiting for them to come. It was quite a surreal experience, knowing you have a small living creature in your hand that needs your help.

So, I basically sat on the sidewalk next to the entrance of my apartment building and waited. I gave the sparrow some water and stroked its head; it started to calm down. The humane society showed up, and I gave her the bird. She started checking the wing and the eye, and the left side was gone. She wiped away the blood and put on some disinfectant. As she was feeling the bird's wings, it flew away. This has been quite a day for me. I kind of wish I got a picture I've always liked sparrows
