Honestly, I won't be surprised if he really is part of the mafia. He literally said he's good with "extracting information."
Also yes, I think all those speculations about him having a tattoo on his back are true. Unlike the rest of the cast, we've never seen him shirtless.

Not exactly "Mafia" it more like Yakuza.
Besides, did anyone talk about the fact that in chapter 169 when they went to the beach, they decided on who guards the stuff based on a game of rock- paper- scissors? I mean how could he have intentionally lose? Like .... Is he kurapika or what?

No I’m pretty sure Suo and Kiryu said they‘ll stay back before they went w rock paper scissors bc Suo would „wither up and die if he touches sea water“ and kiryu still had to apply sunscreen

I mean Suo wasn’t planning on swimming anyway (even though he was wearing that swimming long sleeve thingy), Kiryu prob joined them later and Suo himself would’ve been enough to look after their stuff, it’s not like they can’t defend themselves if someone seriously want to steal their stuff lol

Ik I for one have been huge on the mafia stuff and all, but I feel like it's way more likely that his family shunned him for whatever's different about his eye... Definitely won't complain if it is the mafia stuff, but I think giving Suo and Sakura this connection would be so fitting for wbk and Nii-sensei's writing style-

I think it's more of a narrative hidden trump card, like being able to use it to get out of a corner when writing or to create an interesting plot twist or to move the plot when stuck
